Marriage Alliance With The Lycan Monarch -
Chapter 46: Eradication
Chapter 46: Eradication
"Dowager, the monarch is here to see you."
"Let him in."
The doors opened and I stepped in.
"Oh my son, what brought you so late? We spent a lot of time in court; you should be having your rest."
I came closer enough for the light to hit my face, and her smile slowly faded.
I stared down at her with a quiet sheen to my crimson eyes, and I did nothing to hide my bloodlust as it went on a full swing, engulfing the entire room.
Her handmaids dropped to their knees, finding it difficult to breathe.
Mother slammed her hand on the table and shot to her feet. "What is this? Stop this absurdity immediately!"
I did no such thing, rounding the table while adjusting my sleeves. "I’ll ask but once..."
"Drevon?" She said my name as if it didn’t belong to me, and whoever stood in front of her was not her son.
"You’re the woman who birthed me. That’s the only reason you’re still standing with your heart beating."
"How dare you say that to your mother!"
"Were you behind the attack on my wife?"
She huffed scornfully. "What’s this? You come into my quarters and threaten me because of that human? Have you truly gone mad?"
One of her handmaidens stopped breathing and collapsed to the ground, unmoving.
Mother gasped, turning to her. "Amara!" She snapped her gaze back at me and raised her hand to strike me, but she couldn’t go through with it.
Her hand stopped mid-air, shaking. Her eyes were wide in pure dread as she withdrew her hand and stepped back. "What have gotten into you?"
She flinched when her second handmaid collapsed.
"You have yet to answer my question, Mother."
She sneered softly, peering at me. "If I wanted to get rid of your human wife, I wouldn’t have used such an approach."
"Indeed..." I muttered. "But you’re the one with the most ulterior motive."
She swallowed. "Your human made her appearance at the ball; it may have been heartwarming for you, but that alone set her right in their claws."
"The houses then..." I gave her my back. "I’ve been considering decreasing their numbers, but wiping them promptly from existence will do just the work, less stress, more blood."
"Drevon Balthar!" she yelled. "I’ll not tolerate your insane actions against your people for a mere human!"
I cast a look over my shoulder with a frosty glare. "Then give me a name, I need only a name."
"I do not control the houses or their actions! If they acted on their own, then they did it for the prosperity of the empire. If you’d married Sloane and marked her as your mate, then your human wouldn’t be dead!"
"I hate to disappoint you, mother, but my wife is not dead."
"How unfortunate..."
"You know the houses better than I do. You must know who was responsible."
Mother smirked cruelly. "As I said, I have no control over their actions, and if a house has stepped up to do the needful, then it was long overdue."
"Mother..." I coaxed, turning so that she could see me well. "I’d advise you to get to work."
"Excuse me?"
"Bring me the culprit or else I’ll bring down the houses one by one."
"You wouldn’t dare—"
"Dowager!" a knight rushed in.
"House Vale has been eradicated."
"What?!"
"I left the youngest heir alive. Rest assured that Tarn Vale’s son will be raised well and remains a loyal supporter of the crown. His family was charged with treason, and this is my mercy."
Mother almost lost her footing if she hadn’t braced herself. The way she looked at me was as if she had seen a monster she had never known before, but I didn’t care about how she looked at me.
"I entrust you shall find me my culprit or watch every house under your influence burn to the ground."
I walked to the door, leaving my horrified mother behind. I picked up my pace, keen to get back to Eloise.
But I came to an abrupt halt when I caught a shadow standing and leaning against the column. The cloud parted, and the moonlight shone on the corridor.
My eyes darkened when I set my gaze on familiar orbs.
"Hello, brother..."
"Damon," I said.
"Did I arrive at the wrong time?" he stepped forward. "The smell of blood is great this fine evening. I wonder who made the grave mistake of getting you angry."
"What are you doing here?" I asked coldly. I despise looking at his face because he has been a constant reminder of the primal part of me.
The last time I saw him was but five years old, and even at that age, he was a terror in the flesh to the point he was sent out of the castle into seclusion because of his unstable mind.
Damon spread his arms. "Is that the greeting I get after you haven’t seen your little brother for what? Twenty years or more? You were the golden boy, whisked away or, better yet, chosen by our father to succeed him in war. While I, the dark egg of the family, was sent away but rejoice, I have come home sane."
"Did I note a grudge in your tone? That’s very like you, little brother."
Damon snickered.
"But that didn’t answer my question..."
He came at me in a speed of lightning, but I tipped my head to my left, and his elongated nails only left a red line on my cheek.
"War has done you well, far more. Do not mind me, I was simply testing your strength." He retreated his hand. "And to see just how angry you are... I must say not enough because you’d have ripped my hand off just like you did at that lake when we were children, ring any bells?"
I walked past him and said. "I should’ve taken your head."
Damon laughed. "Its nice to see you too, brother."
