Chapter 42: Give Me Your Heart

Chapter 42: Give Me Your Heart

"A cheat?"

"Yes, a moment led by the wine and..." I trailed, bringing my eyes to his lips.

Why are they so moist?

I gulped because right now I didn’t picture him with clothes but shirtless with those broad ripped muscles and tattoos, taunting with every movement as he stalked toward me and I’m beneath feeling whatever monster between his legs.

"Eloise?"

I blinked, snapping out of it. Eloise, what is wrong with you?

I snatched a macaroon and shoved it into my mouth, along with many more, just to distract myself and my thoughts.

I heard Drevon sigh, and I looked over to him, just when he reached and used his thumb to brush something at the corner of my lips.

"You keep cutting your words short. What exactly do you want to know? You can ask me anything."

"Anything?"

"Anything," he murmured, bringing that thumb to his lips and sucked against it.

At this point, my mind will collapse upon me. Stay strong, Eloise!

"What do you want from me?"

"Whatever do you mean?"

I leaned closer, unafraid. "They always want something in return. You already mentioned you wanted me when you laid eyes on me, and now you have me. I’m your wife by human law, till death do us apart."

His eyes lit up, and they glistened, making them seem magical. He raised his arm behind me and braced his elbow on the iron, with his hand under his chin, watching me with immense amusement and attention.

Determined not to douse myself in his godly appearance, I continued. "What else do you want from me now that you have me? You do not listen to your people and act this way—"

"What way?" he teased.

"Affectionate," I gritted out.

"Shouldn’t I act affectionate toward my wife?"

"Then it’s all about duty, isn’t it?" I found myself getting aggravated. "Lady Sloane clearly mentioned how much of an honorable man you are, I guess she wasn’t—"

Drevon placed his hand under my jaw, eyes on me with a passion that made my heart race faster than ever. "All I want is your heart."

"M-My heart?"

"Give me your heart, Eloise, and I’ll give you mine." Our lips brushed, but he didn’t go further to kiss me.

He’s not joking! But last night, when I asked him if he had feelings for me, he didn’t answer.

I leaned away. "Why will I give my heart to a beast?" I questioned, grimacing in contempt.

He chuckled deeply, bringing my hand to his lips, and pressed a soft kiss against it. "I like a challenge, it’s one I’m looking forward to winning because so far my losses have piled up, and there’s one thing you should know about me, little wife. I despise losing."

I shivered but said nothing. I’m not sure I could conjure words that could match this situation because it felt as if I had been caught under his claws, but I didn’t know if they would rip me apart or caress me.

Claws are known only to mark and damage.

All I want is his favor to secure my safety; I don’t want his heart.

"Shall we take our stroll? The sun is not up yet, and it’s perfect," he said, putting on my shoes and gently placing my legs down and rose to his feet.

He stretched his hand out for me to take.

I watch him, just really watch him far more than I’ve ever had because I’d been avoiding doing so. My pulse raced, and my insides flipped in more ways than one, not because I felt a discomfort coming or a nausea, just a strange pure...comfort.

Shall I allow myself one more cheat? An exception and indulge just one more time.

I reached for his hand, and I told myself this wasn’t it. It was the firm purpose of maintaining his favor. Yes, this is what it is. I’m only indulging in this because I needed to stay safe in this castle, and in doing so, Drevon must remain by my side.

I placed my hand on his, the warmth from it consuming my insides.

This was all about his favor.

I rose to my feet, and he led me out of the gazebo, as we walked the stone pavement. I slid my hand away from and tucked it in my sleeves.

There was nothing more to this, nothing.

"Do you enjoy the view?" Drevon asked.

"I-it’s quite lovely," I admit.

"But it’s missing something."

"What?" I asked out of curiosity.

"Come, I will show you." He placed a hand at the small of my back and led me to our right, at the covering of the topiaries leading toward a path that ended with an iron gate.

Drevon opened it and revealed a garden of tulips, all of different colors.

"I didn’t know which color was to your liking; you never quite specified."

"So you planted them all?!" I pitched, eyes moving to an elegant wrought iron gazebo that stood near the edge of the garden, a heap of tulips around it.

"Yes," he replied like there was nothing to it. "I made it your special place, too."

I snapped my wild eyes at him. "S-Special place?"

"A place where you don’t need to be around my kind. Instead of confining yourself to your room all day, come here as much as you want. I have ensured no one knows about this place."

"I-I can’t accept this." I shook my head, turning on my heels to leave, but he grabbed my hand to stop me.

"Then accept it as a wedding gift, I’m sure that’s long overdue."

I clenched my teeth. "Wedding gift or not, I cannot accept."

His eyes were saddened. "Why? Is it not to your liking?"

Please stop.

I yanked my hand away from his hold. "I cannot accept it. Don’t you understand me?"

"Then tell me what you want, I’ll make sure to give you that no matter how long it takes."

"Even you cannot give me what I want; no one can." I turned and walked away. A feeling swamped my insides.

I thought this would be easy, but it wasn’t!

"Eloise?"

Against my better judgment, I came to a halt, but I had no intention of facing him. My heart can’t bear that. I just stood there with a shuddering breath and squeezed my eyes shut.

I heard his footsteps coming closer. The heat of his body slipped into mine like a magnet.

"There’s no need for you to leave, I’ll leave."

All I heard next was his footsteps until there was nothing else, just the soft rustle of leaves as the wind swirled through. I opened my eyes and found myself alone.

A sinking sensation plunged upon me.
