Marriage Alliance With The Lycan Monarch -
Chapter 31: It Shouldn’t be Difficult, Right?
Chapter 31: It Shouldn’t be Difficult, Right?
I eyed the dual doors like it was the road to hell.
"What’s wrong, Your Grace?" Lucan questioned because it had been five minutes and was yet to announce my presence.
"You would not understand," I muttered.
Every encounter with Drevon has ended in a disaster. I didn’t think a simple exchange could cause such troubles until I met him.
"This is the path to hell."
"Hell? But that’s not possible, this place looks nothing like it."
I grimace, moving my gaze to Lucan. "It’s a metaphor."
"Oh..." he drawled, nodding his head in understanding.
I clicked my tongue as I faced the door again. "Talia, you’re going in with me," I said, but I couldn’t feel her by my side. "Talia?"
I looked behind and saw her a great distance away, almost at the end of the hall.
"What are you doing so far over there?"
"I’m quite okay here, my lady," she replied, glaring briefly at the door as if there was a monster.
"Have you gone crazy? You are my handmaid, and I’ve no intention of going in there alone."
She bowed. "Forgive me, my lady, but no."
Why is she like this?
I exhaled sharply in defeat. "Let’s just get this over with," I mumbled.
I’m just here to see him about the celebration, that’s all. That shouldn’t be difficult, right?
"Monarch, Your Grace is—"
The door opened before Lucan could finish and revealed Garrick. He stepped aside. "Your Grace."
I had a feeling he had been waiting.
"Sir Garrick." I stepped through, putting up a brave face, when the door slammed closed behind me.
The study was spacious, and it could have been a hall if needed. Gigantic shelves on both sides, and I was awed, taking a spin to take in everything. Father’s library I sneaked into in the past doesn’t even compare to this.
Just how many books are here? I’ve read everything in Father’s library. Could there be more?
I gulped audibly suddenly in hunger for knowledge. My entire life, I was sickly. Too weak to move sometimes, throwing up my guts, and bedridden for days on several occasions.
At a certain age, I realized no matter how much I wanted to be physically strong, I could never not like the heroines I have read about. I was born incomplete, but I had one thing that wasn’t—my thirst for knowledge—it wasn’t much, but it made up for everything, and I found myself whole again.
I quickly collected myself and allowed my eyes to roam to the far end of the study, where a broad window was, displaying the view from outside. Red curtains draped on both sides like a curve, banded by ropes.
There was a high chair encased with gold and velvet fabric, and Drevon sat there, a wide table in front filled with stacks of papers, arranged properly.
A cool air of shiver caused goosebumps to rise on my skin. Having his eyes on me told me he’d been watching me the entire time.
"Took you long enough, little wife."
I’ve forgotten how much that masculine voice affected me. It made me all fuzzy inside and the damn butterflies fluttered happily for no reason at all.
Seriously, why are they so happy seeing this man? Tsk!
"You were expecting me," I said, keeping my tone as formal as possible.
I hated how true that was, and his broad, devilish smile did nothing to hide it.
"I find myself jealous," he confessed.
"Pardon?"
Drevon arose from his chair and rounded the table, just the sight of him in complete uniform got my heart racing.
Stupid organ.
"It didn’t take my gifts to drag you out of your self-confinement, but Lucan. I figured he would annoy you to no end."
Cocky bastard! I played right into his hands.
"About Sir Lucan," I began. "His service is not necessary, I’ve got Talia."
If he thinks he can pin his Gamma to my side, then I shall do everything in my power to defy it.
He leaned against the table, hands buried in his pockets. "I consider Lucan’s service necessary."
"You mean to watch me?" I didn’t like that. "You’d the entire wing cleared on my behalf already, and I’m grateful for your thoughtfulness. However, I don’t think I need a sitter, too."
"Do you trust me, Eloise?"
"No," I was quick to reply, and I thought I might have slighted him, but he only grinned.
"You will in time, I promise."
He sounded too sure of it, and I didn’t know what to make of that.
"Sir Lucan will go," I said sternly, determined to oppose him until the end.
"Alright..."
I blinked. He agreed so easily?
"Under one condition."
Of course there is!
"I need one Lycan with you. Your handmaid is a loyal one, but she’s human. So, may I request you to have another?"
"Why? Because I’m not safe to wander about without one?"
"Yes," he replied in a far too serious tone.
Great! Dangers are on all sides, but I can’t tell where. Maybe Drevon was one of them; he was the one who married me on a whim and thrust me into this hell.
They say the hell you know is better than the one you don’t. I’ve lived through my life surviving my stepmother and sister, but now I’m dealing with Lycans. A far, much hell if you ask me.
"I didn’t get the chance to explain myself that day. Your meeting with my Mother shouldn’t have happened."
"It doesn’t matter; it was my duty to meet her, and so I did."
He narrowed his eyes. "But if it puts you in danger, it’s not."
"Or were you scared I would find out about your lover?"
A perplexed look morphed on his face. "Lover?"
Ah, he doesn’t even have the decency to admit it. "Are we done? I’m still tired and need my rest."
I wanted to leave now. I haven’t spoken to him about the celebration, but now I have no desire to do so anymore.
I turned on my heels to leave, but he grabbed my hand. I tugged, but he wouldn’t let go, so I faced him to muster up my strength to pull away.
"Do you believe I have a lover?" he asked with vehemence in his eyes.
"I-I don’t care if you have one," I said, trying to stop myself from stuttering.
"Are you sure about that? That look in your eyes makes me doubt your words."
"What look?" I asked innocently. "This is my serious face."
"Are you sure?"
"It’s my face and I know my face."
"Only when you look in the mirror," he teased. "But now all I see is discord. You want to believe me, but at the same time, you don’t."
"I’m not—"
"You said you don’t trust me, Eloise, and as much as that wounds me. It only encourages me to win your trust no matter what."
