Maids VS Apocalypse
Chapter 127: Fascinating.

Chapter 127: Fascinating.

Lara’s ruby eyes surveyed the vast hall before falling on a young man with brown hair. The world came to a halt as she made her way inside and in just two seconds she was standing in front of him protectively.

"Master, Are you unharmed?"

She received no response and had to look over her shoulder for confirmation. The young man appeared just fine. At the very least, he had no visible wounds.

Mark’s head jerked up slightly and pleasant surprise colored his face.

"Lara! You came just in time!"

What an entrance. The maid’s stunning appearance along with the bloody backdrop had left everyone stunned. She managed to kill the tension in the hall and draw their attention to her, though she was the only one who was able to make use of that momentary pause.

No one noticed the massacre that took place in the waiting room until the door was blown open. The hall was embroiled in its own mess and everyone inside was focused on the battle that was about to start. That should have been the logical explanation. Mark found himself unable to believe it.

’There were about a dozen red hoods in the waiting room and outside it too,’ he thought. ’Lara couldn’t have killed them all without making a sound....’

He did notice the System messages informing him of each kill the maid

"Where is Ben?"

Lara didn’t spare the skinny Italian a glance as she answered.

"I do not know. I came here the instant I sensed Master was in danger."

In other words, she abandoned the big guy and rushed over. A danger sense that alerted her whenever he was in trouble came as a surprise to Mark. A welcomed surprise, of course.

’It’s probably an effect of the contract...’

The rage and confusion weighing his thoughts vanished and Mark was about to think again. He snatched his imaginary controller and opened the Quest log, quickly confirming that he hadn’t failed his quest. That was enough proof of his friend being alive.

"A maid?" The robed man muttered. "And that halo..."

Light blue liquid rippled inside a test tube that manifested out of thin air and fell into Mark’s palm. His eyes lingered on it, and mustering every bit of willpower he had, he stepped toward his maid and held it to her.

"Drink this."

With an enemy in front of them, Lara was hesitant to drop her stance, that is until she saw Elya standing protectively at the front. Banishing all hesitant thoughts she took the test tube and downed its content. The coolness of the liquid spread through her body, bringing with it a refreshing sensation.

Medium MP Potion was only the second tier of MP restoration items and because of that it costs only 300G in the game. The System must’ve thought that’s bad business and so it jacked the price all the way up to 1500G, making it cost five times more than the System’s version of Basic MP Potion which is already overpriced.

In a life and death battle being stingy would only lead to one’s death. Still, Mark couldn’t help feeling the pinch when he saw his maid down the potion in one go. To divert his mind from the pain, he turned his attention to her status screen.

Some of Lara’s stats had seen a significant boost when he raised her level last time. Focus more than doubled for some reason, which is why Mark opted for a Medium MP Potion instead of a basic one, unsure if the latter could restore her Mind Power to an acceptable range before the fighting resumed.

’Its proficiency increased?’

Same as Stats, the only way to increase the proficiency of an Ability was constant training. Mark only learned of Blood Manipulation while checking Lara’s stats the previous day and hadn’t seen her use it once, and since it details were upgraded without his knowing, he realized that he had missed his chance again.

’Well, there is always a next time.’

The robed man and his hooded underlings appeared to be wary of Lara’s presence, seeing that they hadn’t moved for some time now. That worked for Mark and the others just as well. Buying time was the next best move on the list since they couldn’t progress with the first plan.

"You, what is your name?"

The question that broke the silence came from none other than the enemy leader who wore a difficult expression as he looked at the maid. Lara adjusted her stance and her grip on the dark gray spear.

"You ask for my name yet you fail to reveal yours first?"

The robed man must have not expected such an answer as shown by the subtle twitch of his left eyebrow. He closed his eyes and sighed, shaking his head slightly before letting the corners of his mouth rise slightly.

"Please excuse my lack of manners. It is quite the tense situation we are in." Placing a hand on his chest, he bowed slightly. "My name is Zhang Tianmu. A humble servant of his holiness, the wise and merciful Neb’Alseth."

’The fucker really is Chinese...’

Though that was the first thing he noticed, Mark found the second part far more concerning. It gave him one more reason to extend the conversation so when asked for his input with a glance, he nodded to give his permission.

"My name is Lara Becker. I serve as Master Mark White’s maid."

"Mark White..." The robed man, Zhang Tianmu, glanced at Mark and frowned.

"Elder Zhang."

At some point, one of the Red Hoods stepped forth and knelt. Zhang Tianmu glanced at him, asking a silent question. The minion produced something out of thin air and held it up. Mark’s pupils dilated when he saw it was a tablet device.

"Hmm..." Tianmu’s brows furrowed as he swiped on the device. "Fascinating." His gaze returned to the maid, and after a pause, he spoke in the same respectful tone "Lady Becker, if I may ask, why would a great being such as yourself choose to side with those heretics?"

"That is not for you to know," Lara replied.

"I see." Tianmu nodded. "Whatever the case, I have an offer for you."

"I refuse."

The immediate rejection hung in the air and fused with the silence that followed, adding to its weight. A sigh escaped the robed man.

"To think you would throw away the chance to serve a more qualified master. What a pity." The tension returned as his glare turned sharper. "Still, I am a generous man. I will do you the honor of ending the suffering you’re forced to endure. Once that fake is dealt with, you will be free to choose a new path."

He handed the tablet to the kneeling Red Hood then reached into his right left sleeve with his right hand and pulled something out. It was a one handed sword with a bone white blade. Mark paid it no mind as his attention was on the device that had vanished soon after the minion took it.

"We need to get that tablet back." He said.

There was a lot on his mind but for the time being, that became his utmost priority. The others didn’t need an explanation as they locked onto the target. Their objective remained the same but with an additional detail; keep that one Red Rood alive and ensure he doesn’t escape.

Crimson essence trickled down Alex’s blade as he turned away from a falling corpse. Another three were on either side of him, two of which had roots sprouting from the arrows pierced into their heads.

"It has gone quiet back there." He glanced in the direction they came from as he spoke.

"I’m guessing it’s Ms. Becker’s doing." Ramsay pulled back the hood of his cloak and then removed the mask on his face. "There won’t be any reinforcements. Probably."

"We should hurry, then." The blonde one said, having already switched back to his uniform.

"Right."

There was only one reason that would drive the maid to ignore the plan and rush over. Having made a solid guess, Ramsay contemplated whether he should do the same or wait until he finished his part.

He soon made his decision and stepped toward the double door at the end of the hallway, and along the way, he made sure to collect the corpses on the floor. He wished he could do something about the spilled blood as well.

Grasping the handle, he closed his eyes, breathed in, and pushed it open.
