Chapter 75: Episode 18 Demon Statue_2
But this time was different. The golem was entirely smashed into the stone wall, shattered all over, becoming its current shape. I know that a golem cannot destroy itself; it can only annihilate itself by borrowing the enemy’s attack.
He wanted to continue to accompany me... I know it...
I saw the soul of the golem! Yes, this golem has a soul! It feels nothing, does not understand resistance, has never thought, knows no magic, not even speech; it merely silently follows by my side. However, it has a soul.
All my life, I finally made a wish...
The only thing I do not regret is that this wish came true.
Thus, I have become what I am now. No one can see me; I roam here all day long, unable to leave too far. This is the story of this golem, and also my own story.
Lynch sat silently on a rock; Nimo lay on the mage’s lap, wailing loudly; Deluo quietly watched the golem immersed in the dust, with his back towards the other two, his shoulders gently shaking.
"I swear by all my spell abilities, I will help you repair this golem." Lynch raised his right hand, palm open beside his forehead—a gesture of making a vow.
"Thank you." After a while, Red Mist said.
"Do you still have to stay here all the time? Would you be willing to join us in finding a way to repair this golem? If you can contribute your heart power in the process, I think you’d be willing!" Deluo turned around, eyes swollen: "Come with us; it’s too lonely for you here alone."
"I really want to... find that repair method with you...but" Red Mist spun in place, looking at the surroundings: "I must remain where there are precious metals, and it must be a substantial amount of rare metals. If this weren’t a silver mine, I wouldn’t be able to move in the mine passage."
Lynch rolled up his left sleeve, revealing his refined gold prosthetic: "Is this piece of metal big enough?"
Red Mist swooped close to Lynch’s arm with a "shuh" sound, saying in a trembling voice: "This...this is the Divine Power Arm, also called the "Left Hand." You...actually found this, indeed you might find a way to...repair the golem."
"What is this arm used for?" Lynch always wanted to figure out what this mysterious origin thing was.
"This arm is called the "Left Hand." In my time, the simpler the name, the closer it indicated to the essence of things, the stronger the power. This is said to be made by a Great Arcanist named Casas, regarded as the strongest defense of an Arcanist. But the specifics, I’m not clear."
"The strongest defense? A bit exaggerated. What kind of defense is this, dead heavy, just sturdier." Deluo sneered.
"Maybe it just hasn’t been activated yet. Oh, if only I could remember those magical knowledge..." Red Mist sighed: "However, I think I can stay within your arm; there’s enough refined gold for me to reside."
"Alright, let’s go together then. We still need to see what exactly is causing trouble in this mine." Nimo wiped his eyes hard with a handkerchief, still sobbing slightly as he spoke to Red Mist.
"No, you go first, I want to look at the golem a little longer, I want...to accompany it for a while. I will catch up with you, I fly very fast."
Leaving the motionless Red Mist, the three followed along the passage it pointed, soon reaching the end. The exit was on a steep stone wall, about a hundred feet from the cave’s bottom. Below was a passageway, beside which was a rushing underground river.
The three looked down, just in time to see two figures pushing a mine cart below. Due to the distance, even the dwarf with dark vision couldn’t see the situation below the stone wall, not to mention Deluo with ordinary vision. Only the mage could observe the situation below. He gestured for the other two to stay quiet and then leaned out to look at the two figures.
These two figures had black-green scales, with a snake-like triangular head atop a slender neck, flicking yellowish-brown tongues as they looked around. They carried enormous crossbows and a two-handed sword on their backs, wearing exquisite chain armors. The two figures laboriously pushed a cart full of silver along the rugged path. The mage initially thought they were ordinary snake-men but noticed that these figures had human-like hands with five fingers, appearing more robust and powerful. Moreover, they did not move forward by swimming with tails like snake-men (only female snake-men could have feet and stand, male snake-men did not have feet), they distinctly walked on the ground with human-like two feet.
"What on earth are these things?" Lynch was also a bit bewildered. It seemed indeed the Underdark hid plenty of mysteries. He watched the two figures leave, waved to the others, preparing to go down.
Deluo carried Nimo, the two shared a Feather Fall Technique; the mage used the Refined Gold Finger to dig small grooves into the stone wall to grab and support, leaping down twenty feet from the ground, the warrior caught him. The three landed firmly on the ground.
"Next time, I must prepare a few more Feather Fall Techniques, this is too embarrassing." Lynch rubbed his sore shoulders, looked at the hidden high cave entrance, muttering to himself.
Deluo drew a giant sword from his back, Nimo took out his modified crossbow: "Which way to go?"
Lynch pointed to the depths of the passage, now dark as if a pitch-black mist swallowing all surrounding light: "Everyone be careful, I just saw two figures akin to snake-men, well-armed. I fear there will be more ahead."
"Hmph! Don’t worry about it." Deluo moved his shoulders and neck, looking relaxed.
"Here I come..." that mass of Red Mist floated out from the stone wall, arriving before the mage. It shrunk down, slowly becoming smaller, melding into the mage’s refined gold prosthetic.
"Call me Finder, I... don’t want to use my old name anymore..." it gently said.
Even though Deluo and Nimo couldn’t see Finder, they knew this companion was right beside them.
