Mage Legend
Chapter 39: Episode 2: Lost

Chapter 39: Episode 2: Lost

Lynch sat quietly on the hospital bed, listening slowly to Red Nose Moni’s narration. Moni’s long-winded way of speaking greatly prolonged the storytelling time and effectively reduced the amount of useful information in the story. If it weren’t for his tall nephew Nimo adding some useful annotations beside him, the mage would definitely not have gleaned any useful information.

"So, you guys dug me out from under that pile of mithril ore?" Lynch asked, "Do you want to purchase some mithril?" He thought carefully: Even if a miracle happened, Moon Harbor City couldn’t have escaped the giants’ attack unscathed; the castle of the Duke, after the battle between him and Mage Kuziman, must be in ruins. The real owner of these mithril mines, Duke Gangsa, is unlikely to have survived unscathed. Most importantly, according to the laws of Pate, mithril and refined gold must be registered and cannot be privately stored. There’s no record of so much mithril in all of Pate, which means these mithril are privately stored and can be deemed ’illegal’. Even if the city lord survived, he wouldn’t come back to search for the mithril. In other words, these precious ores are now essentially ownerless.

"If you want them, just take them. I don’t need them now." Lynch thought for a moment and said.

"Really? Really really?? That’s great." Moni clapped his hands and jumped happily, "Nimo, did you hear that? He agreed. Now I can solve the funding for my instrument’s research! The Elders’ council will definitely reward me."

"Moni, let me ask you again, where are my other things? Especially my backpack?" What Lynch needed now was his magic book, he had to rememorize his spells.

"It’s right next to you; we didn’t dare to touch anything inside." Nimo said, "Remember the day before yesterday, that bag could even move by itself, scared me to death."

Lynch laughed, "Inside is my magic pet, a little snake, you don’t need to be afraid. Can you help me bring it over?"

The backpack was immediately handed back to the mage. Lynch opened the backpack, and a small azure snake crawled out from the bag. Lynch reached out to touch the snake’s head and said, "Little snake, look, these are the uncle and nephew dwarfs."

As soon as he finished speaking, Lynch felt something was wrong. Logically, the mage and his magic pet have a psychic connection; they can sense each other’s thoughts. Although the little snake was standing in front of him, Lynch couldn’t sense its thoughts. He looked at the snake curling its body, staring at him with two red eyes, flicking its tongue twice, and suddenly lunged at the mage.

Lynch waved his right hand, and the little snake was immediately flung away, landing in the corner of the room.

"What happened?" Moni and Nimo dodged the snake and asked anxiously, "Why did you suddenly throw it?"

"I don’t know what’s going on; I can’t feel my magic pet. It seems like it’s just a stranger’s snake, it doesn’t recognize me anymore." Lynch looked at the little snake, the small azure creature shrank in the corner of the room, watching the three of them warily.

"Then what should we do? Should we kill it?" Moni frowned and asked, "Is it dangerous?"

"No, don’t!" Lynch shook his head, "It has been with me for many years, and now it has almost turned into an ordinary snake. Why don’t you find a forest to release it? Maybe it can retain some of the special abilities it gained as a magic pet and should be able to take care of itself."

The little snake tilted its head, looked at the people present, flicked its tongue twice, and then turned around and slithered away on its own.

Looking at the departing little snake, the mage couldn’t understand what had happened. Resigned, Lynch sighed lightly, picked up his magic book, opened the familiar cover, smelled the familiar ink with a special scent, and saw the rows of handwriting left during his five years at the academy, the notes filled with magic and knowledge, and he felt strength returning to his side.

"Thank you both for your care, but I would like to quietly memorize magic. Could I ask you to step out for a while?"

"Oh, oh, absolutely no problem." Moni said while pulling his nephew out the door, "I happen to need to report to the Elders’ council that you have woken up and also the good news about using those mithril. I won’t disturb you for now. This time they have no reason not to let me continue researching my All Things Machine!"
