Chapter 206: Episode 75 Meltdown
The Black Crystal Tower was always eerily silent, without even a whisper of the wind. Inside the dark tower, magical tomes and various historical documents lay in quiet slumber. It was like a graveyard for books; apart from the mages, no one could enter the tower, much less care about the fate of these papers, and in Ratris City, mages were now a rare breed.
The news of the second family’s priest being killed spread swiftly; the battle that took place at the Spider Temple quickly reached the ears of every Dark Elf. Initially, it was thought that the first family had been conserving their strength, hiding in their castle to regain vitality, and wouldn’t take any action. No one expected their advisor mage to have "easily" taken care of a high-ranking priest.
The small families were eagerly awaiting, hoping for a conflict between the two major families. With their strength, they dared not get involved in the fight between the two families, but if they could follow the victor and clean up the battlefield, there would be plenty to gain.
After all, both of these major families had accumulated wealth over centuries, and even falling, their remnants were worth a fortune.
However, against everyone’s expectations, the second family seemed to be utterly intimidated and made no response to the killing of their priest. They never publicly discussed the incident, and even when meeting with members of the first family, they appeared subdued, as if afraid of possible conflict.
Some people believed that without the High Priest, the second family’s strength had diminished, which is why they showed weakness to Matron Batana; others said that it was just a blinding technique, a smokescreen, and that the second family was surely preparing for revenge in secret.
But before long, two more bodies were discovered. At the "tavern" inn, two core members of the second family were murdered, with the twin wounds on their backs clearly revealing the attacker’s treachery.
After an investigation by some interested parties, it was found that the room where the incident occurred was only separated by two walls from the room where the first family’s advisor mage was staying, and now that surface-dwelling mage was nowhere to be found. Many speculated that it was originally a failed assassination attempt by the second family on the mage, ending in the killing of the two assassins by the mage. Since then, the second family’s power, particularly their deterrence over other small families, greatly diminished.
Just like last time, they still did not discuss this blatant conflict, even becoming more low-key than before. Everyone began to doubt the remaining strength of the second family, and everyone harbored their own plans.
Now they were just waiting for some family to lead and challenge the second family. In Ratris City, there was never a lack of wolves ready to pounce on the prey and share the spoils.
Now, every Dark Elf with ambitions of getting a piece of the second family’s pie started to take action. They all, without prior discussion, thought of one person—Advisor Mage Lynch. Both incidents were closely related to him. If they could find this human, if they could get first-hand information from him, or even just learn that the advisor mage was still alive, it would be a catalyst for these would-be usurpers to take decisive action.
The entire Ratris City was secretly and openly searching for Advisor Mage, but there were three places they couldn’t search: the first family’s base, the second family’s base, and the Black Crystal Tower.
Lynch was currently resting on the second floor of the Black Crystal Tower, completely unaware of what was happening outside, and no one could enter here for the time being. After several battles, the mage felt exhausted. This feeling of weakness stemmed not only from the life-and-death struggles but also from the ever-present Dark Elf City itself. In this place, he dared not trust anyone, especially the Dark Elves. He had to constantly suspect others of scheming and plotting, which made him feel incredibly oppressed.
"Only such crafty creatures as the Dark Elves would enjoy this feeling and be able to endure this way of life!" The mage recalled what he had read about the Drow and added his own footnote to it.
Soka knelt restlessly on the chair, propped her chin on her hands, and rested her small head on the backrest, yawning with her little mouth open. Since Dark Elves were everywhere, little Soka didn’t dare stray even a step away from Lynch. Although she possessed a gemstone that could make her invisible, Lynch warned her that it could only be used for a limited time and couldn’t allow her to roam freely.
