Chapter 155: Chapter 153: The Once Eagle King 1 (First Order Five More)
Lu Xuezhen was talking with Qin Qin when she noticed her gaze drift toward something in the distance. She followed Qin Qin’s line of sight, but saw nothing out of the ordinary.
"What are you looking at?!"
Before Qin Qin could respond, a middle-aged woman dressed in opulent clothes was on the phone, looking at the green light and preparing to cross the street. Just as she took a few steps, a motorcycle sped toward her at high speed. The woman was utterly petrified; bystanders covered their mouths, and some even screamed.
Just when everyone thought a tragedy was about to occur, a tall figure tackled the middle-aged woman to the other side of the street, while he himself fell onto the pedestrian path, clutching his right leg with a pained expression.
The middle-aged affluent woman got up from the ground, still shaken, and began to curse at the motorcyclist in a vulgar tone.
Some time later, the middle-aged affluent woman approached her rescuer, who was lying on the ground. She intended to thank him, but upon seeing his tall figure in pain and dust-covered clothes, as if he had just come from a construction site, she took several steps back with a look of disgust. She then pulled a few hundred bills from her bag and threw them onto the man.
"Here, take this few hundred as your reward for saving me. Don’t think of clinging to me. Even though you saved me, it wasn’t my doing that you are in this state," she said.
The man, about thirty, covered in dust and wearing only a thin jacket in the winter cold, glanced at the money scattered on him, then nonchalantly swept it aside without a word.
When the middle-aged affluent woman saw this, she immediately became unhappy and said, "You think it’s too little?"
"Don’t you dare try to scam me. You’ve gotten all you’re going to get for saving me!" she said.
As the middle-aged affluent woman continued to rant, the man paid her no attention. He grasped his right foot with his right hand, attempting to rise from the ground but grimaced with pain. That’s when a pair of delicate, fair hands reached out to his arm, "Are you alright? I’ll help you get up."
The man looked up, his distinctively handsome face catching Lu Xuezhen’s eye. She hadn’t expected this somewhat disheveled man to be so attractive. She paused, momentarily stunned, before flashing a smile, "Can you stand up?"
The man grunted softly in affirmation and, with Lu Xuezhen’s help, he stood. She then noticed his right foot seemed off-kilter. Had he sprained it?
A flash of sympathy crossed her face as she still heard the voice of the middle-aged affluent woman nearby. She looked at the woman with an icy stare, "Have you said enough? Madam, this man kindly saved your life, and you think a few hundred dollars is enough to dismiss him?! Is your life only worth that much? Did you not see him fall? Can’t you even reach out to help him up? Have you no conscience at all?"
Lu Xuezhen’s thunderous words turned the middle-aged affluent woman’s face crimson with shame, and the surrounding crowd began to criticize her as well.
Never before had the middle-aged affluent woman received such criticism. She glared fiercely at Lu Xuezhen, "What do you think you are? What does this have to do with you?"
"Indeed, this is none of my business, but I cannot stand to see someone so ungrateful. He should not have saved you. He should have let the motorcycle hit you instead, so you wouldn’t have had the chance to insult him. You are like a dog biting Lv Dongbin, not recognizing a kind heart when you see one," Lu Xuezhen countered.
"You... you... you..." the middle-aged affluent woman sputtered, shakingly pointing her diamond-ringed finger at Lu Xuezhen.
With a lifted head and a disdainful look, Lu Xuezhen glared back, not noticing the man beside her had been watching her intently, his expression dark.
"What about me? People like you shouldn’t be saved! Next time you rescue someone, be more selective. People like her aren’t worth saving, lest you end up getting berated," Lu Xuezhen turned to the tall man, who just softly grunted and said nothing more.
Qin Qin had been watching the entire scene with an amused smile.
Angered to the point of turning dark, the middle-aged affluent woman raised her hand, "You brazen little harlot! I’ll teach you a lesson today; I swear it."
Just as the middle-aged affluent woman’s hand swung down, a slender, elegant hand caught her wrist.
"Auntie, are you enraged by shame?!" Qin Qin stepped in front of Lu Xue Zhen with a smile on her lips but ice in her eyes, "No wonder your husband keeps several mistresses and avoids coming home. With the way you are, how could you possibly hold onto a man’s heart."
Qin Qin disdainfully threw the middle-aged lady’s hand away.
"So that’s it, taking out your anger on this young girl, huh!"
"Why bother saving someone like her? Better she had died in the accident."
As middle-aged lady heard the people around her pointing and commenting, her face became exceptionally ugly. She glared fiercely at the bystanders, "Don’t get smug – aren’t you afraid she will cling to you, paupers, huh!"
After a huff, the middle-aged lady turned to leave, only to have her high heel get stuck in a crack in the sewer grate. She fell to the ground abruptly, and none of the onlookers dared to approach, considering her actions just moments ago – who would dare to rescue her now?
The middle-aged lady waited for someone to help her up, but when no one came forward, she angrily got up on her own. She struggled several times to pull out her high heel to no avail, and eventually had to hobble away with one foot unshod.
Laughter erupted from the crowd. This must be karma.
Qin Qin looked at the middle-aged lady’s retreating figure with a smile, her hands moving from front to back, as she withdrew her Spiritual Energy.
Lu Xue Zhen made a face at the middle-aged lady’s back. Some people are just hopeless.
"Are you okay? I see your foot is in pain, did you hurt it when you fell?" Lu Xue Zhen’s hand remained on the man’s arm.
The man seemed a bit uncomfortable as he withdrew his arm, then looked down at his right leg, which he was clutching, a shadow crossing his gaze, "No! It’s been crippled for a long time."
Lu Xue Zhen could tell that the man was speaking carelessly, but she sensed the pain hidden in his words.
"Stay away from me." The man backed up a few steps, looking at the dust on himself that had stained Lu Xue Zhen’s clothes, "Sorry for dirtying your clothes."
Lu Xue Zhen glanced at the dust on her clothes, shrugged it off with a smile, "It’s fine, don’t worry about it. Is your leg hurting? Do you need me to help you get back?"
The man gave Lu Xue Zhen a glance, looked at her delicate face, averted his gaze, and clenched his fists, "No need."
He turned and started walking away slowly, limping.
Lu Xue Zhen watched his receding figure, suddenly clenched her teeth fiercely, and stepped forward to block his path, "Do you want to heal your leg?!"
The man’s expression darkened, a flash of pain in his eyes, "It’s useless!"
He had tried everything, this leg was beyond recovery.
Seeing the flash of pain on his face, Lu Xue Zhen didn’t know why her heart felt a pang of sympathy again.
He was a good man, but fate seemed unfair to him, and she felt like she was looking at her past self.
She didn’t want to see him like this!
