Madam, Please Behave -
Chapter 360: The Truth
Arriving at the destination.
Using the address provided by An Qianxun, Liu Changqing didn’t drive for long before finding the place. But to his surprise…
The residence wasn’t luxurious.
On the contrary, it was an older apartment building, quite similar to his own old place back in the day—maybe even a bit more run-down.
He’d previously learned from a phone call with Chu Fang:
Chu Fang had once contacted the family of the driver involved in the incident. But not long after, the family moved away from their original address, and she searched for a long time without finding them.
He had assumed that after someone took the fall for Li Chongming and went to prison, the family would’ve gotten rich. But it turned out… they were living in this kind of environment.
Liu Changqing didn’t overthink it.
He found a spot to park the car and headed into the building. The lightbulb near the stairwell flickered on and off, and the walls were plastered with all kinds of small ads.
The place wasn’t in good shape. He climbed the stairs to the fifth floor. Standing in front of the door, he didn’t hesitate—he raised his hand and knocked.
Bang bang bang, the sound of knocking echoed through the empty stairwell.
“Coming, coming!”
The walls weren’t soundproof at all.
Even from outside, Liu Changqing could clearly hear someone responding from within. It didn’t take long before the door opened.
A stout, plain-looking woman appeared before him.
She scanned him up and down. Upon noticing his tall, sturdy frame, she grew wary and quickly tried to shut the door.
From behind the door, she shouted,
“Who are you?!”
“Hello, I just want to ask you a few things. Could we talk face to face?”
“We don’t buy insurance here!”
“……”
Her curt refusal came through the door, and for a moment, Liu Changqing didn’t know how to respond.
He paused for a few seconds before speaking again.
“Do you know Li Chongming?”
“……”
Now it was her turn to fall silent.
After hearing Liu Changqing say that name, everything went quiet.
About three minutes passed before the door finally creaked open again.
The woman didn’t look pleased.
She seemed angry but afraid to show it. Still, she didn’t shut him out.
Instead, she motioned for him to come in.
“You can come in.”
Liu Changqing didn’t hesitate and walked straight into the apartment. They didn’t offer indoor slippers, so he kept his shoes on as he entered the living room.
The apartment was small—
Two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom.
Maybe because it rarely saw sunlight, the air inside wasn’t very pleasant. In the living room sat an old, bulky TV. A little boy, sniffling from the cold, was sitting on a tiny stool, fully focused on the screen.
He showed no curiosity about Liu Changqing’s presence.
The woman noticed Liu Changqing looking at her child and immediately grew tense. She hurriedly spoke up.
“I haven’t told anyone about that. Can you people just stop coming here already?”
There was a trace of anger in her tone, though not enough to be confrontational—more like she was scared he’d get upset.
Liu Changqing didn’t respond to her right away.
He kept looking at the boy watching TV and then asked curiously,
“Didn’t Li Chongming give your family a lot of money? Why are you still living in a place like this?”
“What money? I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
The woman froze for a moment, then said that—clearly trying to cover something up.
Liu Changqing turned his gaze away from the boy and stared straight at the woman.
His expression grew calm.
“April 24th of last year. A happy family was shattered after a crash with a car. The man died, the woman was left comatose, and the child was seriously injured…”
“You…”
Liu Changqing glanced again at the boy watching TV and continued.
“The little girl was probably around the same age as your son—maybe ten or eleven…
Too bad her legs don’t work anymore.”
“……”
Facing the silent woman, Liu Changqing asked again.
“Your husband was Li Chongming’s driver. But one thing doesn’t make sense—he had asked for leave that day to take his kid to the hospital. So why… was he driving his boss’s car alone that night? And why did the crash happen?”
“……”
The woman lowered her head, saying nothing.
Liu Changqing narrowed his eyes slightly.
“So… what really happened that day? Can you tell me?”
Over an hour later.
Liu Changqing returned to his car.
The moment he opened the door and sat down, he let out a long exhale.
At first, the driver’s wife refused to talk.
So Liu Changqing applied a bit of pressure—he made up a simple story, claiming the police were reopening the investigation, and that even though the case had already been closed, withholding information could still land her in jail.
Clearly, the woman didn’t understand the law.
But the thought of possibly going to prison herself and leaving her kid all alone at home… made her hesitate.
After Liu Changqing repeatedly reassured her, she finally decided to spill what she knew.
The real culprit behind that tragic crash—was Li Chongming.
He had been driving drunk. Chu Fang’s father, trying to avoid the oncoming vehicle, swerved too quickly. Though he tried his best to prevent the collision, the two cars still crashed.
Li Chongming’s car came out mostly unscathed. But Chu Fang’s family, who were driving at high speed and tried to dodge him, ended up flipping the car, which caused the devastating accident.
Chu Fang’s father didn’t die immediately.
But because Li Chongming fled the scene, they lost the best chance to save him.
After the incident, Li Chongming drove away and escaped.
By dawn the next day, the driver turned himself in.
From the wife’s account, Li Chongming gave them a large sum of money. But afterward, strange people frequently showed up near their home.
Since her husband went to prison, she’s been under surveillance.
Every time she tried to visit him, someone would appear to warn her off.
Even after moving several times, it never stopped.
That’s why, even though she was clearly unhappy when Liu Changqing showed up earlier, she still let him in.
She had mistaken him for one of them—thought he was just there to take a look around, make sure she hadn’t spoken to anyone, throw a few threats her way, and leave.
That’s also why the boy showed zero interest in Liu Changqing’s visit.
He was used to it.
This kind of intimidation wasn’t something Li Chongming could pull off on his own.
It was obvious that Ye Rong had a hand in it.
Even the money Li Chongming gave them wasn’t something he could’ve afforded back then.
And according to the woman, the surveillance group suddenly disappeared during the New Year holidays—coinciding with Li Wanran and Ye Rong’s divorce.
It wasn’t hard to figure out…
Who had sent those people.
With that thought, Liu Changqing came back to his senses.
He pulled out his phone from his pocket and dialed someone he hadn’t contacted in a long time.
An Yancheng, who worked at the police station.
