Chapter 202: Chapter 202 Aetherial-Class II

Dimitri exhaled slowly, irritated as he watched yet another fireball blaze toward him. He sidestepped it with ease, the flames scorching past his face. What once surprised him had now become repetitive.

"I gave you a chance," he muttered under his breath. "Now you’re just being a pain in the ass."

The chains on his back reacted instantly, slithering and extending. Two more emerged with a sharp, wet noise—thick, steel tendrils that twisted upward and anchored themselves into the ground like legs. Slowly, Dimitri rose higher, now standing well above Lana. The chains held him like a grotesque spider, elevating him several feet off the ground.

Lana narrowed her eyes, fire whirling around her clenched fists. She didn’t stop attacking. She couldn’t. Flames burst from her hands in relentless barrages, one after another, her mind screaming through the grief. But none of them hit.

Dimitri was faster now, more agile with his height advantage. He shifted his weight on the chain legs, letting them swing his body from side to side like a pendulum. Each fireball either missed or was absorbed by the thick metal limbs. He looked calm, bored even.

"You’re not experienced," Dimitri said coolly. "You’re just throwing everything and hoping something sticks."

Lana didn’t respond. Her chest heaved as fire erupted violently from her arms. Her grief turned to rage, and rage gave her power—wild, uncontrolled power.

Dimitri seemed to grow tired of the game.

Two chains suddenly slithered down from his side. They moved fast, heading toward Lana, slashing the air like whips.

Lana braced herself, but the chains weren’t long enough to reach her.

Then she realized something was wrong.

The chains abruptly snapped—no, the blades on the tips detached mid-air. Her eyes widened in horror as a volley of gleaming steel shot toward her in a chaotic spread. It wasn’t a whip attack—it was a shotgun blast made of blades.

Too many.

Too fast.

She froze.

Every muscle screamed at her to move, but she couldn’t.

So she closed her eyes.

A gasp escaped her lips as she curled up, arms over her head. Her body shook, expecting to feel pain, to feel death itself.

But what she felt... was wind.

A powerful gust of wind rushed past her like a protective barrier, and then—

CLANG! CLANG! SPARK!

She heard it. Metal clashing. Sparks dancing.

A hand.

A warm, familiar hand wrapped tightly around her shoulder, pulling her into an embrace.

Lana opened her eyes.

She felt soft feathers around her, smooth like silk, but dense and impenetrable. The air smelled like smoke and warmth—but not from fire. Something divine. Something otherworldly.

And then she saw him.

Liam.

His scarf was gone, his face exposed. Pale and calm, but those eyes—his bright blue irises had turned entirely white, glowing faintly like polished marble.

But the true shock was behind him.

Wings.

Two massive wings stretched from his back, pristine and majestic. They were white—almost blindingly so—with a soft sheen like moonlight reflecting off armor. They weren’t just feathers. They shimmered like metal. Each plume gleamed as if forged from crystal and steel.

And they had shielded her from every single blade.

Dimitri stood completely still, stunned and speechless.

Lana couldn’t speak. She could only stare.

Liam finally unwrapped the wings from around her, his arms still resting protectively on her shoulders. His gaze lifted toward Dimitri.

His voice, when it came, was deeper now—calmer, more powerful.

He didn’t need to speak, though. His presence said it all.

Meanwhile, in Liam’s vision—something else stirred.

A familiar interface. Sharp, glowing text. It hovered in his view like floating light.

DING!

Liam didn’t blink as the information rushed through his mind. He felt the changes. His body was stronger. Faster. Sharper. The pain that had nearly killed him minutes ago felt like a distant memory. His wings spread out slowly, feathers rustling in the air, glowing softly with latent energy.

Lana stood behind him, her breath shaky. She wasn’t crying anymore. She couldn’t.

Liam had come back from the dead.

And he wasn’t the same.

Even Dimitri felt it. His instincts screamed, warning him of danger. He narrowed his eyes, analyzing the boy who now stood tall with glowing wings. This wasn’t just recovery.

This was transcendence.

The two stared at each other.

Liam’s fists clenched. The white glow in his eyes pulsed with purpose.

Dimitri stood tall, his chains still twitching like the legs of a predatory spider, his glowing red eyes locked onto Liam. The air was heavy with tension, and for a long moment, neither of them spoke. Then, with a voice laced with disbelief and something close to awe, Dimitri finally broke the silence.

"In all my five years as an exogen... I have never seen one like you!" he said, narrowing his eyes. "What the hell are you?"

Liam didn’t answer. His piercing white eyes, glowing with ethereal light, stayed fixed on the enemy before him. Exogens—that must be what they called the upgraded, the evolved ones. Liam filed that term away in the back of his mind.

Dimitri expected Liam to rise into the air with those massive, gleaming wings. To launch himself or slash through the battlefield with his new powers. But instead, the wings folded behind Liam and slowly disappeared into his back, vanishing like a dream. His glowing white eyes dimmed, fading back to their usual piercing blue.

Dimitri blinked, confused. "You’re... giving up? Just like that? You’re a coward after all. Hmph. That threat I felt... it was nothing but a fluke."

Liam raised an eyebrow slowly, the edge of his lip curving into a smirk. "I never said we were ending," he said coolly. "We’re just beginning."

Without warning, his knees bent slightly, then—

BOOM!

Liam launched himself into the air like a compressed spring being let loose. Lana gasped, her eyes widening as she saw the dent he left on the floor. A small crater had formed beneath his feet from the sheer power of his jump.

Dimitri’s eyes snapped up. Liam was already closing the distance between them with terrifying speed.

Reacting instantly, Dimitri sent his chains flying upward like twin vipers, aiming to slash Liam down midair. They cracked like thunder as they made contact—but the impossible happened.

Liam didn’t bleed.

Instead of slicing through him like before, the chains stopped in his grasp, one in each hand. His grip tightened around them, and the steel links groaned under the pressure. They didn’t pierce him. They didn’t even leave a scratch.

It was as if the chains belonged in his hands.

"What the...?" Dimitri muttered, his expression twisting.

Liam gave the chains a hard yank.

Dimitri’s chains, which had been deeply rooted into the ground like mechanical legs, resisted. The entire ground cracked, trembled, and then exploded as the force Liam exerted pulled the chains loose. Dirt and debris blasted outward as the legs were torn free, and Dimitri was yanked off the ground like a rag doll.

He flew through the air toward Liam, completely out of control, panic flaring in his eyes.

Liam’s body twisted with perfect form.

His fist cocked back.

Then—

BOOOOM!!!

Liam’s punch met Dimitri’s face with such ferocity that the shockwave blasted outward like a bomb detonating. The impact was monstrous, echoing throughout the entire facility.

Dimitri didn’t just fall. He was launched.

He flew backward, flipping mid-air, slamming into the floor with such force that the entire place trembled. The ground shattered under him, creating a deep crater that swallowed his body.

Dust and smoke rose into the air, debris raining down like hail. For several seconds, everything was silent.

Lana stared, her mouth slightly open, her chest heaving.

Liam stood on the metal beam above, chest rising and falling, arms still slightly extended from the follow-through of his devastating punch.

Below, in the center of the broken crater, Dimitri lay still.
