Chapter 19: Chapter 20: He Didn’t Mean To...

The next day.

When Iris Harris opened her eyes, her mind was still a bit confused.

The unfamiliar room made her unable for a moment to tell whether she was still dreaming or had already woken up.

Supporting her weary body, Iris sat up from the bed and gently rubbed her temples. A knock came from outside the door, "Miss Harris, are you awake?"

"Mm." Iris responded softly.

"Then I’ll come in and open the door."

A sweet-smiling young maid entered, holding a set of dress attire. She smiled warmly at Iris and said, "This is specially chosen for Miss Harris by our young master. He instructed me to bring it in once you woke up."

Iris expressed her thanks, noting the fabric of the dress felt light, soft, and comfortable.

Thinking of William Moore, Iris asked, "Where is Xavier Gambon now?"

"The young master is having breakfast in the dining room."

"Mm."

Iris nodded, lifted the quilt, and got out of bed.

Reflecting on the trouble she caused him last night, she felt truly embarrassed now.

Especially since he saw her in such an unsightly state, Iris couldn’t help but sigh as she thought about it.

If it hadn’t been absolutely necessary, she wouldn’t have called William Moore; she knew he was very busy.

Afte grooming and dressing up, she left the room in the pure white long dress and headed downstairs.

In the dining room, William Moore was having breakfast served by a maid. When he saw Iris approach, he smiled slightly, "Good morning, Iris."

Seeing him, Iris also smiled.

She walked over and sat opposite William, then softly said, "The dress is beautiful, I really like it."

William’s smile deepened slightly upon hearing her words, his subtle eyes fell upon Iris’s face across him, and he said in a low voice, "I’m glad you like it..."

After breakfast, William put down his utensils and said to Iris, "I’ll take you back later."

Iris hesitated, then instinctively refused, "No need to bother, I can just take a car back."

She already troubled him enough last night.

"Your affairs..." William looked at her, gently and slowly saying, "how could they be considered troublesome?"

************

Sitting in William’s car, Iris rubbed her temples, feeling a bit weary.

"This is what I took out from your pocket yesterday."

As he was driving, William handed her a bottle of medicine.

Seeing that bottle, Iris was momentarily stunned before she stretched out her hand with a wry smile to take it.

"What happened last night?"

"It’s nothing. His friends were just teasing me."

William’s eyes narrowed slightly, his voice growing cold, "Iris, you know what kind of medicine that is..."

"I know."

Iris interrupted him abruptly, lowering her head, gripping the medicine in her hand tightly, taking a deep breath; her voice inevitably trembled, "He didn’t do it on purpose..."

"..."

William pursed his lips and ultimately said nothing more.

Nonetheless, she continued to defend him.

Sometimes, realizing the depth of her feelings for that person made him feel powerless, causing him to retreat.

Because he knew that pursuing her would lead to hopelessness.

In the end, they might not even manage to be friends.

Then it would be better to remain by her side under the guise of friendship, to protect and to watch over her...
