Chapter 439: Chapter 439: No Background
"Okay." Yun Yue didn’t stand on ceremony with him, grabbing the backpack by the door and heading straight to her room.
Walking into her room, she promptly closed the door, tossed her backpack onto the desk, and sat in her chair with her legs crossed.
She took out three books, turned on the computer, and casually picked up one to begin reading; these three books were records of some drugs and data compiled since the establishment of Laboratory D.
Although the most important materials wouldn’t be recorded in them, they were still sufficient for her to gain an understanding of Laboratory D.
She continued to read until one o’clock in the morning, only then had she finished reading all three books. The next morning, she was woken by her alarm clock, her eyes bloodshot with a hint of a fishy smell, squinting as she silenced the alarm, lingering in bed for a minute before dragging herself up with drooping eyelids.
--
At Jing University, the first class of the day.
"Has Yun Yue skipped class again today?" Pan Lingxin was somewhat concerned. This behavior could lead to a deduction in her participation grade, which, if severe enough, could impact her final exam scores or even her graduation.
Qu Yingying had developed a grudge against Yun Yue, remembering how she had been embarrassed in front of so many people yesterday.
It’s better if she doesn’t come; let all her participation points be deducted. Even if she was the national top scorer, what good would it do if she never attends class? I want to see how she scores on the exams.
What if she ends up being the lowest ranked in the entire grade? That really would be a disgrace.
Qu Yingying sneered coldly, glancing over at Pan Lingxin before starting to pay attention to the lesson.
Yun Yue still spent the entire day in the library. Zhang Jiayu had officially begun his classes today and could only come to the library during his breaks. But to his surprise, no matter when he came, he would always see Yun Yue’s figure at that window seat in the library.
He later inquired with the library staff and learned that she had been there since the first class in the morning and had only left her seat for meals and restroom breaks.
Doesn’t she have classes to attend?
Or was it through self-study that she had become a top scorer on the college entrance exams?
Zhang Jiayu didn’t disturb her and sat down at the front desk to open his books and study as well.
Meanwhile, the most tense in the entire Jing University were the seniors. No one knew who had spread the word that the upcoming diagnostic test would be significantly more difficult. This test would affect their allocation of resources, and every one of them was studying furiously.
Unbeknownst to Yun Yue, the instigator of this chaos, she was absorbed in her studies in the library.
Perhaps tired from studying, she checked her phone only to find a message Xiao Chen had sent two hours earlier, "Something came up today, and I can’t come to pick you up. I’ve informed Lin Xuanze to take you home."
Yun Yue replied with an "Okay", then turned off her phone and looked out the window, where the flowers outside were wilted under the sun, their heads drooping low.
Flowers may be beautiful, but they can’t withstand the tests of wind and sun exposure, unlike weeds, which are indomitable, springing back to life with the gentlest of breezes. She was like that weed.
She absentmindedly shifted her gaze back from the window and picked up a pen to continue working on problems.
At five-thirty, Lin Xuanze was waiting for Yun Yue at the entrance of Jing University.
Qu Yingying had two people following her, a sinister glint in her eyes.
She, Qu Yingying, had always been one for settling scores. It wouldn’t be excessive to get someone to teach him a lesson since he made her a laughingstock.
"That’s the guy; he harassed me in the cafeteria last time and made me look like a fool in front of so many people, Brother Jiao, you’ll help me get my revenge, won’t you?"
Qu Yingying put on a coquettish facade. Brother Jiao was her boyfriend and held a fair amount of clout in Beijing.
She had already made sure of her facts—Lin Xuanze was from Lan City and had no relatives in Beijing. They would wait until he left the university grounds, then find a secluded spot to throw a sack over him and beat him up.
This method was very effective. Hit and run, and he definitely wouldn’t know who had hit him.
The man known as Brother Jiao squinted his eyes as he stared at Lin Xuanze, then turned to look at Qu Yingying, "You should know my rules."
Qu Yingying’s lips curled up in a smirk, "I know. Of course, I won’t put Brother Jiao in danger. His family is in Lan City, not one of those big households in Beijing. Even if they find out it was us, he definitely won’t trouble you."
In Beijing, having power meant having a voice. Although Brother Jiao wasn’t very handsome as he grew up, he was passable, and most importantly, he was wealthy and influential.
Brother Jiao didn’t say anything upon hearing this; he squinted his eyes as he continued to watch Lin Xuanze. He was genuinely afraid of accidentally hurting this piece of fresh meat.
"Go grab a meal for me; come back later."
Lin Xuanze glanced at the message and, feeling helpless, headed towards the cafeteria.
"Why is he leaving?" Qu Yingying watched the retreating back of Lin Xuanze with confusion.
Where was he planning to go?
"Brother Jiao, how about I send someone to watch him outside? The moment he comes out, I’ll call my brothers right away," a muscular bald man said as he watched the person in front of him.
Brother Jiao nodded slightly, "Fine, as soon as the kid steps out of the school gate, remember to notify me."
He was tired of anyone daring to touch his woman.
Even with all the guts in the world, they wouldn’t dare to beat someone up at Jing University; even if his father came, he couldn’t save him.
Qu Yingying also felt this made sense and, with a beaming smile, linked arms with him and walked away.
Lin Xuanze took a meal from the cafeteria and went straight to the library, finding her spot and walking over, startled by the stack of books on the table.
"Here’s your meal. Do you read this many books every day?"
How did she manage it?
He looked it over, noting books from the math department, medical department, physics department, and even some extracurricular books.
Yun Yue took the lunchbox, "Of course, I can’t finish if I read every single word, but I can remember pretty much everything after skimming it once. Besides, all knowledge is interconnected, there’s no need to look too closely."
"After I finish these, you can read my notes. They’ll help you."
Lin Xuanze’s eyes lit up, "Thank you."
Her notes were simple and easy to understand, even more useful than the materials sold in bookstores.
Seeing that she started studying right after eating, Lin Xuanze didn’t disturb her further; he found a table opposite her and sat down, taking out his textbooks from his bag and beginning to study ahead.
He had never seen her study so seriously; if their high school teachers saw her now, they would be immensely gratified.
They both studied until ten o’clock, so focused that they lost track of time.
"Let’s go, head home," said Yun Yue as she packed her things and walked towards the reception desk. She greeted Zhang Jiayu and then left the library with Lin Xuanze.
Jing University’s small pathways were lined with colorful lights that clearly illuminated the way. Despite the late hour of ten o’clock, there were still quite a few people on these paths.
Lin Xuanze walked beside her, his cheeks and ears turning red at the sight of the marks on her neck. His expression grew unnatural.
Exiting the school gate, the two headed towards Shengting.
The person who had been keeping watch at Jing University’s gate had been dozing off, but when Lin Xuanze’s figure suddenly appeared, he immediately sprang to attention and called Brother Jiao.
"Hello, Brother Jiao, the kid’s come out. I’m following him," said Bald after hanging up, cautiously tailing Lin Xuanze from behind, careful not to be noticed.
He didn’t expect that there’d also be a girl with him—a chick with a slender waist and long legs, fair and delicate skin. Brother Jiao would certainly like her.
