In the darkness, Zhong Shenxiu had no idea how long he had sunk into oblivion.
Finally, he seemed to hear a vague call by his side,
"Heavenly List!"
"Heavenly List!"
Like awakening suddenly from a deep sleep in the middle of the night, his body plummeting from high above, he jolted and sat up half-way.
Opening his heavy eyelids, he saw the broken roof above him, the smell of dust and decay lingering in his nostrils, and beside him was an altar with a statue that had the head of a bull and the body of a man, appearing quite bizarre.
’I’ve transmigrated successfully again!’
’The feeling is not quite like soul-transmigration, but something more fundamental, perhaps it can be called... a speck of innate spiritual essence? The most fundamental true spirit?’
Zhong Shenxiu silently reflected, absorbing the memories of this body.
In this world, there was Jianghu, where Martial Arts experts emerged in an endless stream, great sects occupied territories, each ruling over their domain, while imperial power dwindled.
This body’s original name was Xun Liuyi, beggar-born, who by sheer luck became a disciple of a third-rate Jianghu faction, the Shanyao Gang.
The day before, the San Shan Sect attacked the Shanyao Gang. Though the Shanyao Gang fought desperately, a loose alliance formed by a group of herb collectors didn’t have any superior cultivation techniques; their main stronghold was breached within half a day, and the disciples scattered in flight.
Xun Liuyi was of low martial ability and junior status, unnoticed by most, he somehow managed to escape with his life.
But he was severely wounded and, reaching the Niu Jun Temple, he couldn’t catch his breath and died.
And his obsession was—to be listed on the Heavenly List!
’This world’s Jianghu seems quite similar to the one from my first transmigration, with a strong Martial Arts culture. Within Jianghu, there are Heavenly, Earthly, and Human lists. The Human List records upcoming young talents of the Jianghu Martial Arts, with those under thirty years old called Hidden Dragons and Phoenix Chicks. The Earth List catalogues World’s Grandmasters, each capable of founding a sect, dominating a region. And the final Heavenly List records those elusive Great Grandmasters, Martial Arts experts who have achieved divine communion!’
’Within the Shanyao Gang, there wasn’t even a single Human Ranking Expert. This Xun Liuyi really had lofty aspirations... Yet, having vaguely heard someone boasting in a teahouse, he buried such a dream in his heart... Well, it’s still easier than becoming the supreme in the world; even that is a tangible goal, somewhat lucky... Otherwise, if the obsession was to bring some dead person back to life, I would be grasping at straws.’
Transmigration, of course, came with risks!
Zhong Shenxiu had long prepared himself mentally; although most obsessions could be fulfilled, if he encountered one that was impossible to complete, he could only accept his fate and seek eternal life in another world, taking it as just another transmigration.
’Maybe it’s not that bad. It’s possible that when the body in this place dies, the True Spirit simply returns naturally, unable to bring anything back, just suffering some injuries... And even if the obsession cannot be fulfilled, just trick the system once again, and I can probably find some backdoors...’
’This kind of obsession trouble can actually be circumvented. For instance, achieving the Primordial Pill, transforming essence into life, the body can be changed into pure essence, the Primordial Pill merging with the innate spiritual essence upon transmigration — it would be equivalent to true self-transmigration. No need to find another body to rely on, and then there’s no trouble with obsessions...’
Zhong Shenxiu struggled to his feet and looked down at himself. His chest was covered in tattered clothes, as if someone had hit him hard with a powerful palm strike.
But after his True Spirit transmigrated over, the original wounds healed rapidly and by now, he was no longer in critical danger.
"A Heavenly List Expert? A Great Grandmaster of Martial Arts Divine? Haha... mere Martial Arts, this is simple. I’ll first challenge the Heavenly List experts, take their place, then I can attack and retreat at will."
Zhong Shenxiu pondered rapidly, "When the time comes, I’ll unify Jianghu, become the Martial Arts Alliance Hierarch, then transform into the Demon Sect Leader, outperforming each other without any bottom line, grabbing as many Heavenly Show Points as possible..."
He had thought he had accumulated enough Heavenly Show Points in his last world.
However, the experience of practicing the Earthly Fiendish 72 Transformations told him, he was still too naive.
This time, he planned to be more shameless and scoop up a bit more.
And this Xun Liuyi, upon joining the Shanyao Gang, had also learned a Martial Art, called ’Medicine Sand Palm’. This palm technique emphasized soaking the hands in a special medicinal solution every day, eventually refining them into a pair of iron palms, even carrying toxins. It had a small reputation within a hundred li.
Zhong Shenxiu just gave it a cursory glance, scoffed inwardly: ’It’s just so-so, counted as one of the better ones among Acquired Martial Arts. The martial strength of this world is slightly stronger than my first Jianghu world, probably having Innate Martial Practitioners, but it’s a minor issue. Can Martial Arts really overpower Divine Spells?’
He glanced at the attribute panel:
[Name: Xun Liuyi (Zhong Shenxiu)]
[Medicine Sand Palm: Level 1]
[Heavenly Show Points: 31 (77%)]
[The Door Among Ten Thousand: Pending Activation]
...
The abject attributes made Zhong Shenxiu feel like rolling his eyes.
He looked outside, only to discover a pitch-black canopy of sky, howling icy winds, and a suffocating atmosphere, as if a torrential rain was about to fall.
"No matter, let’s rest here for the night and decide tomorrow..."
Zhong Shenxiu thought for a moment, then approached the statue of Niu Shenjun and bowed slightly, "I hope the master of the house won’t mind me staying for the night..."
According to Xun Liuyi’s memories, this Niu Shenjun was no simple figure, being the deity in charge of plague, disease, and healing.
His temples could be found all over the world, but for some reason, they depicted him with a bizarre human body and the head of a bull.
Boom!
Just then, a bolt of lightning tore through the dark canopy outside, lighting up the world in a blinding white flash.
The fierce wind surged through the holes in the windows and the gaps in the broken door, bringing with it waves of chill.
Zhong Shenxiu sighed, gathered some thatch to block the gaps as best he could, and found a corner to wait quietly for the heavy raindrops to fall.
Considering the state of the decrepit temple, leaks were inevitable.
Given his current weakened state, if he wanted to have a good night, he would be better off gathering some dry wood for a fire.
However, Xun Liuyi’s body had just narrowly escaped death, and now any movement left him gasping for air, unless he used Heavenly Show Points.
But those points were precious and could be used as an investment in the beginning stage, yet it felt like a loss to use them here.
Zhong Shenxiu just leaned against the wall, his mind tirelessly wrestling with the dilemma, much like a patient in the late stages of procrastination.
Suddenly, hurried footsteps came from outside.
The door of the broken temple creaked open, and an old man with a child walked in.
The elder wore a black cloth garment and upon seeing Zhong Shenxiu, he was surprised at first, but then he bowed his hands, "I am seeking shelter from the rain, I hope I am not intruding."
The man had a distinctive look, with a lump the size of a broad bean above his left eye, which was quite unforgettable.
"We’re all in the same boat here, seeking emergency shelter in Jianghu; this temple isn’t mine anyway."
Zhong Shenxiu shook his head and turned to look at the young girl in red beside the old man.
The girl appeared to be only about thirteen or fourteen years old, with skin so pale that under the moonlight, it resembled the finest jade, yet her expression was cold as ice, and her eyes lacked even a trace of emotion.
The old man chuckled. He came more prepared than Xun Liuyi; he first found an oil lamp with a small crack on the edge atop the altar and filled it with oil. He struck a flint to light it, then found some dry wood to start a fire, apparently to grill some dry rations.
Once three buns were toasted, he didn’t eat them or offer them to the girl, but instead placed them in front of the statue of Niu Shenjun. He then pulled out three sticks of incense from nowhere, lit them, and bowed in respect.
His movements were meticulous, like a devout believer worshiping a deity.
This scene, witnessed by the outsider Zhong Shenxiu, made his back unexpectedly turn cold.
