Chapter 77 - 75 The Legend of God
Chapter 77: Chapter 75 The Legend of God
For some unknown reason, the Wolf God was lying prone inside the cave, as if about to fall asleep.
But upon detecting the footsteps of the two people, it immediately rose, readying itself for battle.
"... Wolf God?"
Seeing the Wolf God once again, Xi Yun couldn’t help but be startled; however, she didn’t forget the purpose of her visit and hurriedly said,
"Wait a moment, Wolf God! I have something I want to tell you!"
But the Wolf God did not give her another glance. Its attention was completely focused on Xiao Yi. A hint of fear showed in its crimson eyes.
Then, with a speed that was nearly impossible to capture with the naked eye, the Wolf God swiftly darted past the two of them and fled the cave.
"... It’s gone," Xi Yun couldn’t help but feel disappointed. "With that speed, we definitely won’t be able to catch up. But, there must be a reason for the Wolf God’s presence here. Xiao Yi, let’s go. The Ancestor Temple might just be inside."
Xiao Yi nodded and continued to explore the interior of the cave with Xi Yun.
After walking down a slight slope, they soon saw it—a heavy wooden door carved with ancient patterns secured inside the cave, undoubtedly the main entrance to the Ancestor Temple!
In the center of the temple was a huge altar, built of rough, uncut stones, upon which many spirit tablets were placed.
The names on these spirit tablets represented the people who had died because of the Feast.
"Is this the Ancestor Temple? But...it doesn’t seem that special," Xi Yun said, searching for something useful inside by the meager light.
Soon, she discovered a pile of yellowed papers and books scattered haphazardly on a stone platform. Among them, a stack of paper was the thickest and most neatly arranged, clearly having been sorted deliberately by someone!
"Xiao Yi! Come over here!" Xi Yun urgently called out, "Shine the lantern over here."
Xiao Yi quickly came over, placed the lantern on the stone platform, and asked, "What did you find?"
"Look," Xi Yun picked up the stack of papers. "There’s not a speck of dust on this stone platform; it must have been cleaned recently. Plus, with this neatly arranged stack of papers, I can be sure that Granny has been here!"
"Meaning?"
"Yes, the last thing Granny must have been doing was sorting through this stack of papers, which means there has to be some important clue hidden within!" Xi Yun immediately skimmed through a few pages and then her face lit up with joy, "This is it! The records of every single Feast held in our village since ancient times!"
This stack of papers, or a few pages, or even a book from which parts had been selectively torn out, was piled in a specific order. The first page started with the very first Feast.
However, after flipping through just a few pages, Xi Yun couldn’t help but freeze.
"The first Feast... there’s no record of it being related to the Wolf God at all?"
"What does that mean?" Xiao Yi asked.
"The Feast exists because of the Wolf God, but... the cause of the first Feast was to offer a sacrifice to a God named Xunyue God!"
"Xunyue God? How is there another God now?
"Hold on a second." Xi Yun began to recount the content earnestly from the beginning, "This all started with the establishment of our village. Back then, people revered the mountains, reverenced nature, believing in the existence of a God called Xunyue God within the endless mountain ranges. The Xunyue God had control over everything in the mountains, and the food people got from the mountains was a gift from Xunyue God, so they worshipped and offered sacrifices to Xunyue God, not daring to trespass on the God’s territory, only daring to build their village at the foot of the mountains."
"But later, war and famine struck together, extreme hunger, and hatred for the invaders eventually drove people to madness, with even cases of cannibalism starting to appear. People then abandoned their reverence for Xunyue God. In order to avoid the war, and to gain access to the food within the mountains, people began to relocate deep into the mountains, which is the origin of our village."
"But soon after, the Xunyue God sent down divine punishment on the disrespectful population, a rain of blood poured down, numerous wild beasts’ corpses fell from the sky, crushing several people to death. Even so, the people could not leave the deep mountains, so in order to placate the wrath of Xunyue God, the first Feast commenced."
"Because there was no Wolf God, the first Feast was completely different from what we know. It was... a ritual where a person was chosen as a sacrifice to be executed, offered up to the Xunyue God. The method of selection involved combat, overpowering the opponent until they could no longer fight back was considered victory, and regardless of whether they were male or female, elderly, or whether they were kin or friends, once someone was determined to be the weakest in the village, they had to be executed. Unlike the Feasts of now, it was a ceremony that completely abandoned humanity, purely a ritual of blood and violence. Oddly enough, children under the age of fourteen, deemed too naive to understand, were not eligible to participate in the Feast and were thus driven out of the village during its duration."
"The second Feast then took place only eleven days after the first? So soon? And the third Feast was held twenty-four days after the second had ended. Why the rush? It seemed as if... they were hurriedly initiating another one, failing to achieve some expectation."
"By the third Feast, people had been tortured to the point of utter exhaustion, so everyone was very passive. And after that, there was no rush to hold another Feast. Not until almost half a year later did the fourth Feast arrive. But, the fourth Feast was very different from the previous ones because... the Wolf God appeared."
"Long before the start of the fourth Feast, a child in the village claimed to have seen the Xunyue God devoured by a beast. At first, the villagers didn’t take it seriously, but since then, the villagers caught sight of a giant white wolf shadow several times, displaying strange abilities. Moreover, after the Xunyue God had been eaten, there was no more blood rain from heaven, so people finally believed that the Xunyue God had been devoured by a beast. The villagers speculated that the Xunyue God had become weak due to the lack of faith in people’s hearts and the ravages of war on the land; therefore, it was ambushed and eaten by a beast. And that beast, having acquired Divinity, came to be known by the people as the Wolf God."
"People believed that the Wolf God, as a newly born deity, definitely needed sacrifices to grow stronger, but it lacked the power to subjugate everyone. So it would devour someone from the village, take on their appearance, trying to gain the trust of others in order to stealthily consume more individuals. Hence, the method for the fourth Feast was to seek out and kill the Wolf God disguised as a human. The mutual suspicions and accusations... had started to resemble our current Feast, but there were still significant differences, especially regarding the legends."
"During the fourth Feast, if the Wolf God was executed, the sky would once again rain blood, signaling victory for the people. But the Wolf God wouldn’t die just like that; it would recover and resurface later. Strangely, after the appearance of the Wolf God, the frequency of the Feasts was greatly reduced, sometimes only happening once every few years or even over a decade."
Then, Xi Yun went on to talk about the subsequent Feasts. Each Feast and its corresponding legends were different, as if those who knew the past legends had died and people unabashedly started changing the stories.
The Xunyue God, the Origin of everything, had even vanished entirely, as if it had never existed from the beginning. And the original god who controlled the mountains had become the Wolf God.
This made Xiao Yi recall what Sheraya had once told him, that gods and the legends of gods are always changing to suit the rulers of the times.
But why were the legends of the Feast and the Wolf God changing so frequently, and to what end?
Xi Yun continued: "The Feast from fifty-seven years ago, which is the first one Granny attended, was almost like today’s Feast, just without the presence of a Guardian Spirit. Then during the Feast thirty-nine years ago, suddenly there were both the existence and legends of a Guardian Spirit; Granny must have found this puzzling, which is why she had always been collecting records about the Feasts."
Xi Yun glanced briefly at the remaining content; it was supplementary details about the past and some discoveries Granny had made herself.
There were still many things unclear, such as the assumed existence of the rule document that had not been recorded in past Feasts at all.
And previously Feasts were timeless, yet this Feast, for some reason, was limited to five days.
Although Xi Yun wanted to continue investigating, she estimated that it was about time.
Xi Yun then turned to Xiao Yi, "Xiao Yi, let’s stop here for today. It’s been a while, and I reckon it’s getting late. We should head back earlier. We can discuss the rest tomorrow."
Xiao Yi nodded, and Xi Yun, with a stack of papers in hand, left the cave with Xiao Yi. As they stepped out, they saw that the sky had indeed begun to darken.
Xiao Yi and Xi Yun hurried towards their house.
"See you tomorrow." After leaving these words, Xi Yun parted ways with Xiao Yi.
After some time had passed, the sky turned completely dark, and everyone began to fall into a deep sleep.
Tonight, Sheraya came as usual, but this time, he didn’t say much, only asking:
"Yi, are you stirring?"
Xiao Yi answered, "I’m sleeping."
"Understood."
Sheraya left at once.
During the third night of the Feast, it was very quiet; to Xiao Yi, it seemed like nothing happened.
However, it wasn’t until the morning of the fourth day of the Feast that Xiao Yi realized that last night had not been as peaceful as he had thought.
Last night, Xi Yun had died.
