Chapter 210: Chapter 205 There Are No Gods in This World
Humans are born sinful.
Thus, one must cleanse their sins before death to be embraced by God and enter the eternal bliss of heaven.
This was the phrase Liliana heard most often since birth.
But she never took it to heart.
When Liliana listened to the soul-piercing cries of people being scorched by raging fires, saw the blissful expressions on the faces of others watching the burning people, and that wisp of black smoke ascending to the sky as if heading to heaven, she understood.
There is no God in this world.
If there were, then God would be nothing but the vilest and most despicable bastard.
...
No one can decide their own fate.
In the same vein, no one can choose their birth or decide what kind of people their parents are.
Liliana was fortunate, for she was born into a family where both parents were present, and they loved her.
Liliana was unfortunate because her parents only loved her for the benefits she could bring.
Liliana’s parents were the founders of an organization under the guise of religion.
Their daughter, therefore, had to be the Holy Daughter who brought redemption to the faithful.
So, while Liliana was still naive and unknowing, she was already performing her duties as the Holy Daughter.
Liliana didn’t understand what redemption was; she simply did as her parents taught her, listening to the so-called faithful recount how terrible their lives were and plead with her for something.
Then she would say a few pre-arranged phrases. Simply put, she would utter words that promised fulfillment of their desires if only they did so-and-so.
And those words, her parents admonished, were revealed to her by God, divine oracles she conveyed, which were by no means taught to her by them.
So, Liliana always believed that the God everyone spoke of was her own parents.
But that was it; just by uttering a few words, those faithful would display blissful smiles.
Liliana heard from her parents that this was the so-called redemption.
Liliana formed a simple concept of redemption in her heart: it must be a good thing if it made everyone smile so joyously.
However, one thing puzzled Liliana; why did those faithful, whose lives were already so terrible, still give money to her parents, whose lives were not terrible at all?
Liliana understood that money was very important, capable of transforming life for the better; she saw that clearly from her parents’ frantic behavior.
But when she asked them, they would always answer vaguely, saying she would understand when she grew up.
Eventually, Liliana saw that they had no intention of disclosing their thoughts, so she stopped asking.
She continued as before, fulfilling her responsibilities as the Holy Daughter.
Everything continued as usual, without issues... until the moment the problem erupted.
While it wasn’t a problem for Liliana’s parents to earn profits in the name of religion,
they had become too greedy, keeping even the portions they should have submitted.
Thus, they turned into an illegal organization misusing the name of religion.
Naturally, they faced judgment.
Not from God, but from people.
As humans aren’t as omnipotent as God, they fled, taking with them everything they had taken from the faithful, betraying all of them as they escaped.
Their daughter, too, was abandoned along with them.
Liliana realized, just as her parents were about to leave, that the purpose of her birth had been fulfilled.
So, naturally, they no longer needed her.
But Liliana wasn’t lucky enough to become an orphan, because in the eyes of those believers, whose lives were a total mess and only held by the thread of God, she was still the Holy Daughter.
The followers believed it to be a trial, so they didn’t accept judgement but instead fled with Liliana.
As they fled, those followers still sought redemption from her, hoping to hear revelations from God.
But their God had already abandoned and fled from them, and Liliana could not respond to their pleas.
The followers, who had once revered Liliana, upon seeing this, suddenly showed fierce and maniacal expressions, pressing her head firmly to the ground, loudly coercing her to grant them redemption!
At that moment, Liliana felt fear for the first time.
It was a pure fear of death.
Though she still didn’t understand what it meant to be alive, she instinctively wanted to survive, to let this life, ignorant and still hasty, continue on...
I don’t want to die, I... I don’t want to die.
Liliana’s mind was filled with such roars.
So, to survive, she devised her own strategy for living.
It was simple: just say the things they expected to hear, as before.
To live... it was that simple.
At last, the followers who had reached redemption finally let go of Liliana... she survived.
But spiritual satisfaction wasn’t enough. The almighty God did not grant the ability to provide sustenance.
On the run, everyone was already starving, but no one had the energy left to secure food, and Liliana once again faced a survival crisis.
Just as they were about to starve to death, they arrived in a small village.
Fortunately, the kind-hearted villagers saw their plight and warmly welcomed them, saving their lives.
At the same time, they settled them in the village without asking for anything in return, simply helping them.
Eating again after a long time, the delicious food brought Liliana to tears.
At that moment, she even thought that perhaps there really was a God in this world.
But the words of the surrounding followers killed the God that had just begun to sprout in her heart.
Those followers, after receiving such heartfelt aid from the villagers, didn’t have even a shred of gratitude towards them in their hearts.
They saw everything in front of them as if they had undergone a trial, so God had specifically arranged these people to rescue them.
All of this was God’s grace!
Seeing the followers’ reactions, the nascent God in Liliana’s heart died.
It was clearly the villagers’ doing, yet they attributed this goodwill and effort to themselves; this so-called God was really shameless.
From then on, Liliana was certain that there was no God in this world.
Therefore, there was no such thing as redemption in this world.
But being born into sin was unchanging. When Liliana saw those kind-hearted villagers begin to slaughter each other, she was certain of this.
