Chapter 116: Chapter 111: Senior Mutant

Jed had already made up his mind.

Although he was still unclear about the true identities of Xiao Yi and Xu Woshi, their clear eyes suggested they were likely not bad people.

Those eyes couldn’t be faked.

More importantly, given that they had the means to break through the military blockade and the towering walls to get to Kelan City, they presumably had a way to break out of Kelan City as well.

Their organization couldn’t possibly have sent them on a suicide mission.

If they had a chance to leave, then entrusting them with the doctor’s research findings was a viable option. Only if they took the findings out could there be a chance to fully resolve the virus issue.

Even if their organization harbored ulterior motives, Jed had no other choice, so they decided to first take these two young people to their stronghold.

There was still some time before the doctor would yield results from his research, so they might as well use this time to ascertain their origins.

Xiao Yi and Xu Woshi didn’t know any of Jed’s thoughts; they simply felt happy.

They hadn’t expected that not long after entering, they would get news of the scientist—that is, the doctor Jed mentioned!

It seemed they could complete their mission soon! A surge of joy filled Xiao Yi’s heart!

Every additional day they spent here increased the risk of Xu Woshi getting injured. If possible, Xiao Yi definitely wanted to complete the mission and leave as soon as he could.

Seeing their joyful faces, Jed couldn’t help but smile.

"Alright, since you’re not infected, then come with me to the Tower. This isn’t a place for idle chat. It’s only a bit safer at the Tower. Get in the car, we can talk more on the way."

"Get in the car?" Xiao Yi couldn’t help but question, "Is it possible to drive? If the roads are full of Mutants, driving would be very troublesome, right?"

"No problem."

Saying this, Jed had already stepped forward, and Xiao Yi and Xu Woshi followed his pace.

As they walked, Jed said, "You don’t understand yet. During the daytime, the Mutants in this city will only stay inside or near buildings; they won’t go onto the roads."

"Eh? Why is that?" Xu Woshi asked. "Is it because these Mutants are afraid of sunlight?"

"No, it’s not for that reason. The Mutants aren’t afraid of sunlight at all," Jed sighed and explained, "In fact, I’m not sure why, either. My personal guess is that the Mutants retain some memories from the past, so they have an impression of buildings as ’home,’ which is why they prefer to stay inside."

"Is that so?"

"It’s just a guess. There’s another reason, too. Not only do the Mutants not go onto the roads, but they also avoid vehicles! Even if they know there are people in the car, they do the same—it’s as if they know cars are dangerous and must be avoided. So in this city, the first safest place is the Tower, and the second safest place is a vehicle in motion."

"...Wow, I see."

As they were speaking, the three of them stopped in front of a black sedan.

"Get in," Jed said.

Xiao Yi and Xu Woshi nodded and took their seats at the back of the car.

Jed also got in and began to drive, continuing the conversation, "We can drive like this during the day, but at night, everything changes. For some unknown reason, once night falls, the Mutants start running around wildly, behaving much more frenetically than during the day. Not only that, but at night there are many more dangerous Mutants, ones you wouldn’t see during the day. So, it’s best if you don’t move about at night."

Xiao Yi and Xu Woshi both nodded in acknowledgment.

"Also, you might need to wait a few more days; the doctor’s research has hit a slight snag. However, we don’t keep freeloaders in the Tower. Even though you’re young, you’ll still need to help out. So let me tell you a bit more about the Mutants."

Hearing this, Xiao Yi and Xu Woshi straightened up in their seats and listened carefully.

Jed said, "Apart from the common Mutants and the Snipers you’ve encountered—those that can snipe from a distance—there are more advanced Mutants, such as the Bombers that explode on their own, with a destructive power similar to bombs. Then there are the Banshees, who can scream loudly to summon other Mutants and are quite formidable in themselves. There’s also a type of Mutant with both terrifying defense and offensive capabilities, akin to a tank, so we call them Tanks."

Here, Jed paused for a moment, took a deep breath, and continued with a hint of dread in his voice:

"But there is one type of Mutant that is far more powerful than the rest, and they only appear at night. They are so fearsome that people call them ’Night Demons.’ One distinctive feature of the Night Demon is... they glow. Their bodies light up with an orange-red luminosity like a map of blood vessels, which makes them very easy to recognize. When you spot a Night Demon, don’t bother with anything else; just turn around and run. The slightest hesitation, and you will be preyed upon by the Night Demon."

"...I see," Xiao Yi nodded slightly.

"Oh, you can see the Tower now, look," Jed suddenly said, pointing in a direction.

Following where he indicated, they indeed saw a tall building that must be the Tower.

"The Tower is easy to recognize, right?" Jed said. "After all, the Tower is one of the few high-rise buildings in the Old City District, and it’s also the tallest. In an area filled almost entirely with two or three-story bungalows, it’s quite conspicuous. Even someone prone to getting lost could find the Tower."

"And in the Tower..." Jed was speaking when he suddenly spotted black smoke coming from a window of the Tower.

"Is that... a fire?" Xiao Yi and Xu Woshi turned to look at Jed.

"No, that’s not a fire," Jed shook his head and explained, "That is a special signal from our Tower."

"Signal?"

"Yes. Right now, there is strong signal jamming within Kelan City. The military doesn’t want outsiders to know the situation inside Kelan City, making the world believe that there are no survivors left so they can bomb the city freely. That is why they’re jamming signals in Kelan City. We have limited means of communication and have to resort to this."

Xiao Yi and Xu Woshi’s communications were unaffected because their equipment had been specially adjusted, and this level of interference didn’t count for much.

"So, what does that signal mean?" Xiao Yi asked.

"It’s a call to gather," Jed’s expression turned grave, "It looks like we’re in for a tough fight."
