Life in North America, you call this an autopsy officer?! -
Chapter 76 - 68: The Reason
Chapter 76: Chapter 68: The Reason
This damn dog.
It even barks at its own owner!
Does it have any appreciation for what I’ve done for it?
Brian felt a tightness in his heart.
He felt like he had rescued a worthless dog.
It didn’t even recognize him.
And why is his dog here of all places?
Wasn’t it at the veterinary clinic where Laura died, taken away by the killer?
Thinking this,
Brian promptly warned Ivan, "Draw your gun and be on guard, this person could be very dangerous!"
After speaking,
he kicked off the tree trunk with a deft force, and his body soared into the air towards the fence over a meter away; then, with a parkour-like roll, he descended from the sky and landed right in front of the bespectacled Sven man who was squinting and revelling in the joy of ’nurturing’.
Hearing the commotion,
the man finally opened his eyes in delayed awareness.
The puppy Shi San also got frightened by the Brian who descended from above, and hid among the flowers and plants.
With big, almost human-like eyes, it first glanced at its new owner who was lying on the ground, then at the suddenly appeared Brian,, hesitantly poked its head out again, getting down on all fours, and began to crawl behind Brian in a belly-crawl.
"Who are you..."
The bespectacled man instinctively covered his chest, watching Brian with his gun in terror, his eyes filled with the awkwardness and fear of being caught doing something bizarre.
Seemingly sensing the grim situation of its new owner,
the scared Shi San no longer hid, but bravely dashed out, positioned itself in front of the man, and started to bark at Brian in a juvenile yapping.
A wave of emotion flickered in the bespectacled man’s eyes.
He grabbed Shi San and hid him behind his back, and with righteous indignation told Brian, "You can hurt me, but don’t you dare hurt my dog!"
"Arf arf arf~"
Shi San also popped its head out from behind the man and bared its teeth at Brian.
Brian: ...
Quite a touching man-and-dog scene!
Looks like I’m the villain now.
Damn it!
He hated betrayal the most!
This damn dog!
A malevolent glint crossed Brian’s eyes, just as he was about to kick it.
Shi San seemed to sense danger and suddenly sniffed the air.
It lifted its head, its big eyes turning very human-like, and then without hesitation, ran in front of Brian, turned around, and started to yelp at its new owner.
The bespectacled man: ...
Brian: ...
The bespectacled man watched Shi San in shock, his finger trembling as he pointed at it, "Simba, you, you, you..."
This dog changes sides too quickly!!!
...
Witnessing this, Brian laughed.
It seemed it recognized him after all.
That’s more like it.
He felt like a girl who had been wooed back by a lousy boyfriend, feeling much better.
Looking at the heartbroken bespectacled man, Brian stepped over Shi San’s body and kicked the man to the ground, "What Simba? This is my dog! Its name is Shi San, a dog I rescued at a great cost. Tell me, why is it with you!"
"This is my dog!"
The bespectacled man, heartbroken by the treacherous Shi San, suddenly forgot about the threat of the gun in Brian’s hand and roared as he charged at Brian with a feeble attempt at fisticuffs, teeth clenched in rage.
As they say, beyond seven steps, a gun is fast; within seven steps, a gun is both fast and accurate!
Bang bang bang~
Three gunshots rang out.
Instantly, three bullet holes appeared in front of the bespectacled man.
His charging body softened under the shock of gunfire, transforming his onslaught into a kneeling slide, which stopped right in front of Brian, giving him a solid headbutt.
The bespectacled man’s courage also dissipated with the sound of gunfire.
His head pressed against the dirt of the yard, his hands raised high, "Don’t be impulsive, don’t kill me, your dog, this is your dog..."
On a tree outside the courtyard.
Ivan, holding onto the tree with one hand and clutching his gun with the other, watched the scene in utter astonishment.
WHAT?
For a dog, two men had drawn guns on each other.
What kind of melodramatic soap opera was this?
Unfinished canine affection?
...
Several minutes later.
Rob Red, the bespectacled man, with his hands cuffed, glanced at the dog named Shi San rubbing against Brian’s legs and, with a broken heart, recounted what he had done for the Bloodbath Gang.
Originally, Rob was a website maintenance worker for a company.
Since his parents died unexpectedly, leaving him a substantial amount of insurance compensation, he had quit his dull job and lived a life of luxury.
That money soon ran out.
Out of necessity and having no other choice,
Rob began to look for work again and somehow ended up being scouted by the Bloodbath Gang.
The Bloodbath Gang’s demands on him were not high.
Through technical means, he would search for keywords on various forums, find netizens curious about mysterious phenomena, Blood Moons, mutations, etc., and then find ways to draw them into chatrooms, before screening them further.
The ones who were selected were lured to Los Angeles under various pretexts, to places provided by the Bloodbath Gang.
For this purpose,
the Bloodbath Gang would even cover travel expenses for some targets who were short on cash.
Rob adjusted his dirty glasses: "There are quite a few people doing this work for the Bloodbath Gang; I’m just one of them. I don’t know the specifics, but I do know that the gang would concoct all sorts of events, offering free health checks for these people. After eating, drinking, and having fun, most were sent back, but a very few..."
He struggled with himself, but ultimately confessed honestly, "A very few completely lost contact, I mean in the real world. As for their online accounts, they would occasionally be active, but I feel that it’s no longer the same person."
Ivan, standing to the side, sneered after hearing this: "You knew something was fishy but still worked for them?"
Rob didn’t speak.
He too had his reservations.
But for every person he brought in, he got thousands of dollars.
And the work was easy.
Eventually, he chose to turn a blind eye to these issues.
...
Brian, hearing Rob’s description, had guessed what the Bloodbath Gang was up to!
The Bloodbath Gang was founded by his uncle.
From his uncle’s various actions, it was feared that the man knew not only about the Mutants but was also preparing to take advantage of the coming Blood Moon to seek out new Mutants in society and then... conduct human experimentation or something else.
But whatever it was,
Brian felt that without his intervention, his uncle would fall on his own.
"Uncle, you may know some secrets, but you probably don’t realize how deep the waters are..."
Brian remembered at Ace Base, after being irradiated by a machine and in a state of vague consciousness, he had overheard information using his Supercomputer Perception Talent: Lurker number 132!
His uncle Billy had long been targeted by the FBI.
Thinking of this,
Brian felt a tinge of loss.
After learning about the existence of Mutants, he began to suspect the real motive behind why his uncle arranged for him to enter the Forensic Bureau years ago.
If he had the chance,
he actually would have liked to find his uncle and confirm his suspicions from the man himself.
Brian cared deeply about this.
He was a person lacking affection.
Regarding familial love,
deep down, he still yearned for it greatly.
But now it seemed,
he probably wouldn’t have that chance anymore.
...
"Brian?"
Ivan patted Brian’s shoulder: "Buddy, have you thought of something?"
Brian came back to reality.
He nudged away Shi San, the dog fawning at his feet, and gave Ivan a nod: "Yes, this seems to be a case of a private organization collecting Mutants. Report it. As for this person..."
Brian looked at Rob, who was anxious: "You haven’t told me why Shi San is with you."
Ivan perked up as well.
He had learned some of the embellished truth from Brian.
This dog was involved in the skinning case that the FBI had taken from them.
They were all Law Enforcers.
Ivan was very upset about FBI agents coming to their Unit B6 and snatching their case!
To spite those jerks and possibly earn a merit that Brian had mentioned would undoubtedly be a very satisfying thing to do!
...
Rob looked at the little dog who was kicked away by Brian but still kept eagerly approaching, feeling like he was in the position of a new lover being pestered on how he hooked up with someone’s ex, like a cuckolded minotaur clown.
He shared his tale of woe with Shi San, the little dog, with a forlorn expression.
