Chapter 269: Chapter 186: Old Hardenn’s Short Story, Jumping from a Building (April Bonus Chapter 2)_3
Of course, Susan might have become addicted to this manner of interaction herself, finding it amusing and effective for training.
By the time group B6 had clocked out, Susan left with Shi San, with no movement from Professor Mycroft.
...
Rooftop.
Even by 8 PM, there was still no sign of Mycroft.
Green put down his phone gloomily, "Boss Brian, looks like we’re in for another night of overtime. I’ve already told my family I won’t be home tonight."
Lately, influenced by the rascals in the group, he had flirted with a wealthy widow, but his own busy career hardly allowed him time for occasional visits.
He had prepared himself for an all-nighter.
Brian viciously stubbed out his cigarette, "Screw overtime, let’s just go find him!"
When they arrived at the institute and saw police cars with flashing blue lights illuminating the surroundings in red and blue, they then realized that a few hours earlier, Professor Mycroft had jumped to his death...
The patrol officer told Brian, "After Professor Mycroft finished the meeting downstairs and arranged his work, he locked his office door, left a letter, and jumped in front of many off-duty employees."
"A letter?"
The officer shrugged, "It appears to be some kind of confession involving many people. In any case, we’ve been ordered to surround this institute and not let anyone enter or leave without authorization from the headquarters."
"We’re not allowed in either?"
Since Brian had gained some recognition in the lower-ranking police circles, it was rare for him to encounter an officer who wouldn’t cooperate.
The officer shook his head, "Sorry, truly, no exceptions. We’re only at the outer perimeter; inside is already under control by the NW Special Service Department."
A captain noticed the commotion here.
He glanced at the tall and handsome Brian and instantly recognized this recently famous young NW officer.
He waved the explaining officer back to his post and said to Brian in a firm tone, "Non-relevant personnel, please leave the area."
Upon hearing this, Green glared at the unfamiliar middle-aged Caucasian officer.
This guy seemed to harbor animosity toward them!
Seeing this, Brian sighed, "I tried to interact with you under the guise of a mere Autopsy Officer, but you’re not making it easy.."
He silently pulled a newly received NW staff badge from his pocket, replacing the previous one.
The middle-aged Caucasian officer, initially puzzled by Brian’s intentions, stiffened in disbelief when he saw the crest of a sword and shield on the badge, "A Second-level Staff of the Dawn Warrior order?"
Brian raised an eyebrow, "Well recognized. I actually prefer your indifferent attitude. Can I go inside now?"
He had no antecedent convenience.
But belonging to the NW, the most powerful law enforcement conglomerate in Los Angeles, as a Second-level Staff, already qualified him to take charge of many issues.
The middle-aged officer, visibly irritated by Brian’s words, veins bulging on his forehead, though coping silently, stepped aside, "Go talk to the Special Service people yourself then."
Even so,
The middle-aged man knew that the Special Service team would likely respect the young man before them.
After all, their team leader was also just a Second-level Staff of NW.
There was a significant difference even among the same rank peers.
A Second-level Staff in his twenties, compared with one in his forties, conveyed a wholly different presence.
Real life isn’t a melodrama.
Brian knew he couldn’t be liked by everyone, so without wasting words after the officer yielded, he stepped into the institute he had visited during the day, amidst the shocked looks from Green, the surrounding patrol officers’ curious glances, and gossip.
By tomorrow night, his story with this middle-aged patrol officer would likely turn into a dozen different versions, spreading across various precincts and police stations, becoming a tale of "never underestimate the young and poor."
Brian was resigned to it.
After all, one’s reputation is often lost by their own action.
...
Inside the institute.
A group of people was standing around a dead body, lost in thought.
They had been there for over half an hour without touching the body, as if there was something peculiar about it.
Suddenly,
A middle-aged Caucasian man with a cold demeanor twitched his ear and turned around, his indifferent gaze meeting the approaching gaze of Brian bringing Green along.
He frowned initially until he saw the badge on Brian’s collar. His furrowed brow relaxed, and his demeanor softened slightly, "Who are you?"
"Brian, Second-level Staff of the operations department, here regarding a case involving the deceased."
Brian stated briefly, shifting his gaze over the man to the hovering red Obsession Little Ball above the body.
The thread was drawn.
