Chapter 48: Chairman

Chapter 48: Chairman

The sun had set, and the remnants of a recent commotion lingered in the air.

This was a digital era, and as expected, people around instinctively reached for their phones, eager to capture the incident.

However, to their disappointment, there was nothing substantial to record.

Timothy’s house had sustained minor damage, and the road bore a few scars, but beyond that, there was no visible sign of what had transpired.

Before Timothy could say anything, Miebaka stepped in.

"We’ll start here. You’ll need to give a statement later at the association, no more, no less. For now, let me see what I can do."

Timothy regarded him with a blank expression.

Trusting him was no longer an option.

The guy had already proven his incompetence.

He chose to ignore Miebaka entirely, relying on him would be pointless.

As Miebaka left, only Timothy and Miriam remained.

She stood there, speechless.

Without looking at her, Timothy walked past, muttering a single question:

"You were planning to leave?"

A sign to tell her that her company was no longer welcome.

He moved toward Gray, who had finished eating and now lay sprawled out, content yet sluggish.

His new recruits were still crunching on whatever food remained.

Timothy paid no mind to the damaged entrance, nor did he care if Miriam left.

He had bigger concerns.

He climbed the stairs to the room he once shared with his siblings, now his alone, and sank into thought.

He half-expected another ambush, but the night passed without incident.

No feedback, no retaliation.

Just silence.

Waking earlier than usual, Timothy went through his morning routine, preparing for the day’s raid.

Checking his phone, he found four notifications from unfamiliar contacts.

The first was from Sophia on his social media handle:

"You didn’t tell me you were E-rank."

Timothy skimmed the message, initially ignoring it.

But something made him go back and reread it.

After two days, this was all she had to say?

He typed a response:

"You didn’t tell me we were attending a reunion."

The second message was from an old government contact, Mr. Joshua.

It was a formal notice listing the rules and obligations of hunters, emphasizing duty to country and humanity.

In other words, a polite nudge urging him to retake the hunter’s exam.

Timothy had already planned to, but something in him resisted.

He needed more time.

The third message was from Miebaka.

For someone Timothy considered unproductive, his message carried surprising weight:

"Settled... at a cost."

Timothy frowned.

That phrase unsettled him.

He wanted to understand the system in-depth, but each time, people told him to "stay out of the spotlight" first.

What exactly was being kept from him?

The fourth message was the worst.

It came from an organization called the Parenting Ward, a bill, neatly itemized.

A bill for his mother’s care.

Timothy’s breath hitched as he read the numbers.

His rage boiled over instantly.

How can this be?

The one-month stay under the association’s care had been a free trial.

If she had recovered in that period, the charges would have been waived.

But she hadn’t.

Wasn’t that just a scam? It was impossible anyone would recover in under a month

And now? The bill demanded an outrageous 100 million naira ($66,666) per year and 10 million naira (6,666) per month.

And payment was due before any further care could be provided.

Timothy clenched his fists.

He knew it.

The government wasn’t helping anyone.

It was all a scheme, a way to extort money at every opportunity.

Joshua’s image surfaced in his mind.

Could he blame him? Maybe not directly.

But withholding information was just as bad as lying.

If Timothy hadn’t shown up at the association, he would have never even known about this.

Without wasting another second, he stormed to the kitchen, noticing Gray had become more active.

A system notification popped up in his vision, but he dismissed it instantly with a simple not now thought.

There was no online payment option, meaning at least that part wasn’t a scam.

He booked an Uber, securing Gray with a scarf behind him like a makeshift bag.

He didn’t even bother sealing the broken entrance.

His new recruits had vanished, and as for today’s raid?

It could wait.

The Uber arrived quickly, and just as quickly, it sped toward the association headquarters.

Timothy paid the fare and leaped out, weaving through the crowd without a care.

He dodged those who were aware enough to step aside and slammed into those who weren’t.

His perception stretched outward.

He wasn’t registering people, he was searching for one familiar presence.

Joshua.

The moment he locked onto him, a sinister satisfaction settled in.

First floor.

Timothy didn’t hesitate.

The security guards barely reacted before he was past them.

Their attempts to stop him were laughable, too slow to matter.

He reached the conference room where he had once sat as a victim.

Inside, Joshua was speaking to three new recruits.

Timothy didn’t knock.

He smashed through the door, splintering wood and shattering its frame.

And before Joshua could react, Timothy’s fist filled with every ounce of pent-up rage connected with his face, sending him hurtling across the room.

Timothy’s fist connected, sending a mild shockwave rippling through the room.

The only real damage was to the chair Joshua had been sitting on, but the expressions on everyone’s faces shifted instantly.

The security guards burst in just as Timothy’s next punch hurtled toward their chief.

The man reacted in time, blocking the strike with both arms.

Timothy narrowed his eyes.

His opponent was either exceptionally fast or had anticipated his attack.

Either way, he knew it would take far more than brute force to make this man feel pain.

Before he could process his next move, a massive hand shot forward with alarming speed, clamping over his face.

There was no hesitation in the grip; it wasn’t meant to restrain but to crush.

He had been too slow.

With an effortless lift, Timothy was slammed into the ground.

BANG!

Dust exploded into the air.

Amid the chaos, Gray, sometimes unknown, had sat calmly on a table that had been shoved to the side by the impact, watching with quiet interest.

Timothy gritted his teeth.

He hadn’t been able to dodge, but if that attack had landed with Gray still behind him, the situation would’ve been far worse.

Joshua, who had slammed him down, furrowed his brows in confusion.

His hand, which should have retracted by now, remained stuck as if something was resisting it.

Timothy seized the moment.

Using the forced pressure, he regained his footing and delivered a powerful kick to Joshua’s face.

The strike was blocked, but it created just enough of an opening.

Timothy drove a punch toward Joshua’s gut, only for the man to intercept it again.

That was when a faint blue shimmer flickered around Timothy’s arm.

BOOM!

Caught off guard, Joshua was sent crashing into the wall.

Timothy wiped the blood trickling from his lips and exhaled.

His eyes locked onto the man who was now emerging from the crater in the wall, clothes disheveled and face dark with irritation.

Both of them were poised to strike again, neither willing to back down.

Then, a sharp clap echoed through the room.

The sound was crisp, authoritative loud enough to force them both to pause.

Timothy turned his head.

Standing at the entrance was an elderly man in a suit, his back slightly hunched, a walking stick in hand.

Beside him stood a composed woman, her posture flawless.

It was clear she had been the one who clapped.

She didn’t acknowledge them directly, merely acting as if nothing had happened.

Joshua, however, reacted instantly.

He dropped into a full bow.

"Good morning, Chairman."

Timothy froze.

Chairman?

Realization hit him like a freight train.

This was the infamous Chairman of the Nigerian Hunters Association.

What the hell was he doing here in Port Harcourt?

It was only then that Timothy fully absorbed the scene around him.

A growing crowd had gathered, murmuring among themselves.

The sheer scale of the commotion he had caused was finally sinking in.

He didn’t know what to do first, greet, apologize, or bolt.

His instinct urged him to analyze the Chairman with his perception.

But the moment their eyes met, his entire body screamed NO in protest.

Instead, he stiffened, lowered his head slightly, and forced out a greeting.

"Good morning, sir."

The elderly man merely looked at him with no emotion in his eyes and instead asked the lady who stood by him.

"What was happening here?"

"They seemed to be entering a confrontation started by the child," The lady replied with an aswitched voice.

She then proceeded to bring out a tablet

"This is A Rank Hunter, Joshua Agu of the monitoring division of Port Harcourt as well the chief of security in this branch of rivers state."

"I am unaware that a person could have that many positions," The chairman replied.

"He has a solid reputation despite the greed shown outwards," The lady said

The man then turned fully towards Timothy.

"The kid is Timothy Walters... E rank Hunter" she said like she couldn’t understand what her tablet was showing her.
