Chapter 94: Agent 952: Xerk
Forsyx said with a smile, "Agent 900 Plus, I’m happy to work with you."
The teen clenched his fist in excitement. "Yeah!"
He wasted no time, snatched the name tag from the woman, looked at the tag, and bowed to Forsyx. "I’m happy to work with you, Sir Biggy."
The woman just stared at Forsyx with wide eyes. "Sir, are you sure about your decision?"
Forsyx just nodded.
She slammed her heel on the ground and turned around, walking away without even looking at Forsyx again.
The teen just waved his hand. "Don’t mind her, sir."
He closed the door from the inside and sat on the empty chair in front of Forsyx.
The boy first pulled out the silver token from his chest and placed it on the table. "Here, Sir Biggy, this is my agent’s badge. I am Agent Xerk with Agent Core 952."
Forsyx picked up the silver token and asked, "Care to explain to me what this token is used for?"
Xerk nodded. "Sir, that agent token represents that you’ve selected me as your agent. From now on, whenever you come into the Prohibited Hall, you just have to show them this agent’s token, and they will guide you to me. This will save you from any queue."
Forsyx nodded, remembering how a lot of people had been doing the same earlier. "Oaky."
Xerk added, "Also, Sir Biggy, from this moment onward, you must avoid telling others about your purpose for visiting. You need anything, just talk to me. As your agent, I am your representative inside the Prohibited Hall."
Forsyx raised his eyebrow. It was like talking to some kind of lawyer.
Not giving him much time, Xerk pointed to the paper with his name on it. "Sir, this paper note is your temporary identity. It only allows you one-time access to the bare basics of five tasks, out of which four have already been used."
Forsyx rubbed his mask. "Wait, I could only see these five tasks? Don’t tell me I need a permanent ID for task submission."
Xerk nodded. "Correct, sir. All the initial-level tasks require you to submit proof to get the task reward. To get a permanent ID, you have to complete one task. Then the Prohibited Hall will issue you a permanent name ID, which will stay with me as your agent."
Forsyx asked the most important question, "The thing about the mana imprint?"
Xerk nodded to him. "Yes, sir. Your permanent ID will be tied to the mana imprint. You’ll just need to verify yourself whenever you collect your reward."
Forsyx looked at Xerk’s face. "Oh, so the task submission did not require this verification, right?"
Xerk nodded. "Correct, Sir Biggy. Also, you don’t have to immediately collect your task reward. You could accumulate the reward and collect it together."
"That’s one of the perks of the black name ID. Some other perks include an increase in task access to eight tasks, and extra rewards in the form of Prohibited Points."
"Prohibited Points? What’s that?"
Xerk pointed to the four quests. "Sir Biggy, every quest has these hidden points as extra rewards. Once you reach the Bronze Card and above, you can use these Prohibited Points to purchase special stuff from the Prohibited Shop."
Forsyx looked at the tasks and asked, "By hidden points, you mean I won’t learn about these Prohibited Points until I select a task?"
Xerk shook his head. "It doesn’t work like that, sir. Sir Biggy, the Prohibited Points are based on how you do your task, like the time it takes you to complete it."
"Then there’s also the quest giver’s satisfaction level. The Prohibited Hall will factor in all of this, and only once you complete the task will you learn how many Prohibited Points you earned. It’s not a fixed reward like the primary reward, sir."
The more Forsyx talked with Xerk, the clearer the workings of the Prohibited Hall started to form in his mind.
Xerk continued to explain other rules, like how he could only take one task at a time, and that he had to either fail or complete a task to move on to the next one.
Then he explained different kinds of quests, like the Opposing Quests—where the Prohibited Hall gets two quests that require opposite objectives.
In that case, the task takers would have to go against each other.
There were also Challenge Quests, where multiple people are given the same task and have to compete to finish it first.
Xerk explained a few other things, then pointed at him. "Sir Biggy, is there anything you want to know more about?"
Forsyx shook his head. "Nah, leave it. Instead, I want to know more about these extra eyes and ears you were talking about."
Xerk took a deep breath and looked into Forsyx’s eyes. "Sir, first thing I want to clarify, this extra cooperation is between you and me. The Prohibited Hall isn’t involved in this."
Forsyx nodded. "Yup, I understand that much."
Xerk smiled and then pointed to the quests on the table. "Sir, my organization is very good at gathering information. So, for any quest you choose, I will help you with all the related information that’s going to help you complete the quest easily."
Forsyx nodded his head. "OK, anything else?"
Xerk pointed two fingers. "Sir, the second thing will be the weekly summary report. That report will have all the hot topics that have been going around the city in the past week."
Forsyx raised his eyebrow and asked, "Wait, what if you provide me with random reports?"
Xerk shook his head. "Sir, once you see the weekly report, you’ll understand. The quality of those reports will be much better than any random rumor you hear around."
Forsyx shook his head. "It’s not about quality. What I mean is, I don’t think what others deem important will have the same value for me. You get what I’m trying to say here?"
Xerk thought for a moment and said, "Sir, in that case, how about this: every week, you can give me one or two topics. The weekly report will have all the information related to what interests you, along with some extra stuff."
Forsyx clapped his hands. "Oh, that’ll do."
Xerk nodded, but then said, "Sir, though, keep in mind there’s a limit to the kind of information I can get. If you ask me about something related to the core region, that would be simply impossible."
Forsyx waved his hand. "Oh, don’t worry, I won’t be unreasonable."
Xerk smiled and then rummaged through his pocket and pulled out a card. "Sir, in case you want any extra information, you can meet me at this tavern. As your agent, I’ll give you an extra discount for my services."
Forsyx looked at the card. It just had the name of the tavern on the front and a bunch of directions to reach the tavern from the main road on the back.
Forsyx threw away the other card the woman gave him and placed this one, along with a purple brothel card, inside his jacket pocket.
He had no intention of going to the brothel, but he knew that, just like Xerk, he could use this token to bribe someone in this city.
Forsyx tapped on the table and pointed to the quest. "So, now that you’re my agent, let me ask—should I do the third task, or is there some other better task that you can pick as my fifth pick?"
Xerk picked up the third quest from the table and read it thoroughly.
After some time, he asked, "Sir, let me ask, do you have any ability that allows you to observe a person from afar?"
Forsyx didn’t have to think much, as his bird form was perfect for that. He nodded his head. "Well, in the day, I don’t think I’ll have any problem with that."
Xerk threw away the other quests and slammed the third one in the center. "In that case, this quest fits perfectly with your intention."
Forsyx found Xerk’s confidence interesting. He couldn’t help but ask, "It looks like you know a lot about this quest."
Xerk shook his head. "No, sir, I’m in the same boat as you. But I do think even with just a decent skill, this task won’t be that much of a problem."
Forsyx pointed to the red skull. "What about this, though? That agent earlier did say a few concerning things about it."
Xerk shook his head. "Sir, this quest only required you to submit a routine report. No matter who the target might be, it should be fine as long as you just monitor them from afar. You just have to make sure not to get caught stalking the target, and that would do."
Well, Forsyx had to agree with Xerk’s analysis here. The task description didn’t require him to find anything specific, so it should be much easier to complete.
Also, he was confident in his ability. If he failed such a basic quest, then their no point in him ever coming back here.
He nodded his head. "Well, let’s not waste more time. I will select this quest."
Xerk got up and said, "Just wait here for a moment, Sir Biggy. I’ll link this task under your name and get all the details about the quest."
With that, Xerk walked out with the quest paper in his hand.
