Chapter 363. [The People Living Deep In The Amazon]

"Gah!?"

The recoil from the shot struck my arm directly.

I heard a strange crack sound from within it.

The jaguar, hit by the bullet, let out a high-pitched scream and leaped away.

It flailed and writhed in pain.

'It hurts! Hurts! Hurts!'

Screaming, it rolled as it ran, escaping deep into the forest.

Perhaps startled by the gunshot, the other jaguars also ran off in pursuit.

"Did... we survive?"

A clicking noise echoed from somewhere.

I realized, belatedly, it was the sound of my own teeth.

"...That was terrifying."

My whole body began trembling.

I tried to hug my shoulders but realized I was still clutching the pistol.

It was still faintly hot, the smell of gunpowder rising from it.

I tried to let go, but...

"Huh... that's weird, haha."

My hand was frozen stiff, refusing to move.

I pried my fingers off one by one until I finally let go of the pistol.

It hit the ground with a heavy thud.

Even now, the raw feeling of shooting a living thing remained in my palm.

"Urgh!? Bleghhh!?"

I fell to all fours and gagged.

I understood it in my head. If I hadn't done that, we would've been dead.

But my heart felt differently.

Taking life to survive. It's something that happens even in everyday life—just out of sight.

"I thought I understood."

Wild animals culled as pests, livestock slaughtered for food or resources.

The only difference is whether you kill with your own hands or have someone else do it.

"Urgh... cough cough. Haa, haa..."

Still, the human heart is softer and more fragile than you'd think.

That's why so many filters are layered, to stop it from touching reality directly.

"Humans probably have to be insensitive to survive."

If we didn't look away, we'd quickly be covered in wounds and shatter.

Humans, gifted with language, also gained imagination—able to understand the pain of others.

"Even so, we survived. We chose to harm others to stay alive."

I think we were lucky.

If the attack had happened any other day, we'd have been killed without a chance to resist.

We managed to fight them off only because we had eaten, and some of our strength had returned. Both of us, safe.

"Wait, what about her?"

I needed to check.

I picked up my smartphone, trying to stand—when my balance gave out with a jolt.

"Ouch..."

It seemed I'd hurt my leg during the jaguar attack too. My whole body was battered.

Using the smartphone's light, I dragged my leg as I made my way to the female Secret Service agent.

Her body was covered with more small scratches.

But thankfully, there were no new major injuries.

"Thank goodness... Huh?"

Relief brought a wave of exhaustion.

I slumped down right there, collapsing to the ground.

I couldn't muster any strength.

As I sat there, I was unable to move.

"Ah..."

It hit me belatedly. My shoulder burned like fire.

When I touched it, my hand was stained bright red.

"Oh, I see."

Blood was pumping out, thump-thump.

Apparently, I'd been clawed much deeper than I thought.

I looked upward.

At some point, dawn was breaking. Light was trickling through the thick canopy above.

"I thought we were saved."

My mind started to drift.

It seemed this was it for me.

Strangely, the fear I'd felt earlier was completely gone.

My heart was calm... peaceful.

"There's one last thing I can do."

With the last of my strength, I moved my thumb.

My vision blurred, but the motions were familiar—I didn't even need to look.

Music began playing from my smartphone.

I set the volume to max.

"I hope this will help keep the beasts away, even just a little."

Maybe, after I die, the Secret Service woman would wake up.

If that happened, I wanted to give her the best chance to survive.

I didn’t know how long the battery would last...

But I was done for. I didn’t have the strength or tools to treat myself.

"...Haha."

Not a bad way to go, is it?

If I can die listening to my favorite song.

Slowly, I lay down on the ground.

I couldn’t even move a finger anymore.

"—God is such a liar."

For some reason, those were the last words on my lips.

I let my eyelids close—

"▲●※x☆!"

"※x☆!?"

"▲※●!"

Somewhere, I thought I heard people talking.

But my consciousness sank deeper and deeper...

***

"...Huh?"

I stared blankly.

I looked around with just my eyes.

"There’s... a ceiling."

It was just leaves laid over branches, but it was unmistakably a ‘house.’

When I tried to sit up, pain shot through my shoulder.

"Ugh... Wait?

Is this... treated?"

Looking closer, something like leaves was stuck to the wound.

It was nothing like any medicine I knew, but it was clearly done by human hands.

"More importantly..."

I heard voices from outside the house.

It sounded like people talking cheerfully, as if they were joking around.

Then footsteps approached.

A woman entered the house... with a ‘straw skirt’ wrapped around her waist.

"▲△○×!※※O?"

She spoke to me with a smile.

It was—in a language I didn’t know.
