Laid-Back Life in Tokyo: I Really Didn't Want to Work Hard
Chapter 194 - 176: The Strange Uncle Yugetsu.

Chapter 194: Chapter 176: The Strange Uncle Yugetsu.

The slanting sun cast its light, and the person with a gaunt face standing before him, hands in pockets, exuded an air that inevitably reminded one of the so-called Yakuza.

"I’m just here looking for someone," Uesugi Sakura said.

"Looking for someone?"

"Looking for someone...?"

"Hmm... looking for someone."

Hanpe re-evaluated the meaning of these words, sizing him up and down.

Perhaps... he really was just here to find someone?

Having been here for so long, even a simple sentence and conversation seemed to carry a deeper implication.

He couldn’t help but feel helpless about his own subconscious thoughts.

"Who are you looking for? Is there someone from your family who disappeared here? Like a brother or sister?" Hanpe said matter-of-factly.

Actually, it’s not uncommon for people to come looking for family members here, mostly young girls’ parents.

The girls were not in mortal danger, but most of them were working in borderline hostess jobs because of debt they couldn’t repay.

Some situations were more severe.

Uesugi Sakura sensed concern from this somewhat rogueish person in front of him.

Could a fingerless Yakuza truly have such a kind side?

It was dubious.

"I’m looking for my uncle, Hanamaru Yugetsu."

"Your uncle? Hanamaru Yugetsu?" Hanpe raised an eyebrow, pulling his hand out of his pocket, "Are you a junior member of the Hanamaru family?"

"Sort of."

"Why are you looking for him?" Hanpe asked.

"Is it really necessary to know?" Uesugi Sakura said, noticing that this Yakuza man was half a head shorter than him.

In a raspy voice, Hanpe said, "Yes, it’s necessary. The Hanamaru family is not well-liked around here."

Uesugi Sakura said nothing.

The Hanamaru family’s unpopularity was probably due to their connections with the police. His uncle had also mentioned that their father-in-law had reorganized this street.

This place was much more orderly than before.

Hanpe acknowledged someone greeting him from across the street, then continued speaking to Uesugi:

"Even though they’re not well-liked, nobody dares to touch them either. Up to now, those guys still don’t know if he’s here to spy on their activities."

In the course of speaking, Hanpe wanted to take out a hard black cigarette from his pocket, but seeing Uesugi in front of him, he put the half-exposed cigarette pack back in.

"Forget it."

As the evening descended from the west, the shadows cast by the sunset grew longer, and the crowded street began to bustle with life.

The neon signs tightly clustered beside the old buildings started to glow, their colorful disarray bringing a sudden sense of dizziness if stared at for too long.

"Bright lights and feasts" was the best description for this restless street.

Hanpe turned around, hands in pockets, and said, "Come with me."

From their earlier conversation, Uesugi Sakura understood that Hanpe was not some great villain, but he still remained cautious.

"Can I trust you?"

Hanpe looked up at the chaotic neon lights above, as men and women in fashionable suits and uniforms walked past below.

Twelve years ago, out of curiosity, he had dropped out of school and come to this place.

Now, he couldn’t seem to leave either.

"No matter what, your uncle once helped me for a while."

His tone was casual.

Hanpe began to walk, mingling with the diverse crowd.

Along the way, Uesugi Sakura didn’t see any Yakuza characters like those from manga. Most of the men in suits were carrying briefcases, all looking like listless middle-aged men.

They came to a fairly ordinary small bar.

The long bar counter was lined with an array of drinks behind it.

As in novels and movies, with the sound of the doorbell, the bartender in a black vest bowed slightly towards the door:

"Welcome."

"Mr. Yugetsu?" This was the first thing Hanpe said after opening the door.

After serving a blue drink to a customer, the bartender said casually, "Inside."

It was Uesugi Sakura’s first time coming to a place like this.

Besides the bar’s brightness, most of the seating areas here were dim and colorless.

A couple sat in a dim corner, with an array of bottles big and small piled up on the table in front of them.

The man was a middle-aged office worker, and the woman was glittering.

They fed each other drinks, exchanging words that were not so pleasant.

Their hands beneath the table were not clearly visible, but judging from where the man’s arm extended and the woman’s coquettish smile, the implications were clear.

Uesugi Sakura followed Hanpe through a passage barely wide enough for one person.

Although space was utilized beautifully here, the almost-touching ceiling made it feel particularly cramped.

Hanamaru Yugetsu lay sleeping comfortably and peacefully in a not-so-large square private room, snoring slightly.

Of course, the signature sunglasses still sat on his eyes.

Except that they were slightly askew, revealing half of his left eye.

Feeling disdain for their uncle, who was not much older yet still caused them worry, Uesugi Sakura rudely went up and patted his face.

He was immediately met with Yugetsu’s annoyed, fly-swatting gestures.

Just as Uesugi Sakura was about to shake him awake, Hanpe, leaning against the doorframe with arms crossed, spoke:

"No one’s ever come to care for Mr. Yugetsu before. You’re not a Hanamaru, are you?"

"No."

Hanpe glanced at Hanamaru Yugetsu, asleep on the sofa: "Then what are you to him?"

"He’s my uncle."

"Hmm..."

Lowering his head slightly, Hanpe examined him again: "Godson? Or is your father his sworn brother?"

"Neither." Uesugi Sakura wasn’t about to reveal his full identity to a stranger.

Seeing his reluctance, Hanpe didn’t press further, standing up from the doorframe to stand upright.

"Alright, wake your uncle and take him home quickly. Apparently, there are more police patrols tonight. There’s no need to worry about safety, but some stores are still quite unruly, so don’t go in."
