Chapter 56 - 56 47 Spoils of War

56: Chapter 47 Spoils of War 56: Chapter 47 Spoils of War According to Lokhak, after he went to sleep last night, Olivia walked through the entire village, trying her best to find all who were still alive, barely saving a few who were at death’s door.

At present, aside from the sixty-plus young men who were conscripted and had not returned, and excluding Olivia and her father, only seventy-six villagers survived after the catastrophe in Selva Village.

Of those, over sixty were women and young girls.

And of the males, there were only a few youths and some young children.

Some people survived by hiding in time in concealed cellars and gaps in grain barns.

As for the reason some boys survived…

it was like that of most of the girls…

indescribable.

The bodies of one hundred and twenty-four dead villagers are now laid out on a clearing.

As for the corpses of the Kantadar people killed by the Griffins, the survivors temporarily piled them outside the village, and they could only wait to be taken elsewhere and thrown into mass graves later on.

The Armor and weapons from the enemy’s bodies had already been stripped off, and most were now piled up in the backyard and warehouse at Olivia’s house.

Lokhak continued to recount to Leon the tally of spoils of war he had counted yesterday.

In total, they found nineteen warhorses still alive.

Among them, three were noble steeds equipped with horse Armor.

Olivia’s stable could only accommodate the most valuable of these fine horses, the others were temporarily placed in the yards of nearby farmhouses, currently being looked after by a few children.

Lokhak spoke with a hint of regret.

There was once a noble warhorse, but that horse had its hind leg severed by Olivia in the battle and had already died of serious injuries…

those hundred-odd Serrian gold coins just disappeared with the wind.

The remaining sixteen horses, draped in robe Armor and of mediocre quality, were the mounts of the Kantadar Hired Cavalry and Knight Attendants.

Speaking of this, Lokhak’s expression twitched slightly as if he had been cut, feeling deeply pained.

He also counted the corpses of the Cavalry warhorses killed by the Griffins, roughly thirteen or fourteen in total.

Although significantly cheaper than the noble top-tier warhorses—perhaps less than a tenth of the price, no matter how cheap they were, that was still a hundred-some gold coins…

As for weapons, including the knight’s longsword that Olivia was currently wielding by her side, a total of four Noble Treasure Swords were found.

There were thirty-five various personal swords used by the Knight Attendants and mercenaries, most of which had little damage.

There were twenty-three cavalry spears, four of which had been destroyed.

There were two long-handled Knight Halberds, one in Lokhak’s hands, and the other placed in the backyard.

This thing was a specially made heavy weapon, unusable by the other surviving youths in the village except for the brutish Lokhak.

Other assorted equipment, not mentioning small knives and daggers, there were also two Knight Kite Shields and some ordinary Soldier’s Round Shields.

Worth mentioning was the discovery of six Urian Cavalry Battle Bows and over ninety gathered arrows from various places.

Moving on to Armor.

Right now, Lokhak was wearing Knight Heavy Armor that he took from the knight killed by Leon yesterday, and it fit him well.

Although the helmet was bombed into shreds by Leon’s magic, the other components remained intact.

Apart from that set of plate Armor, the Armor components that Baron Dawson had lost at the village elder’s home were also found by Lokhak.

After assembling them, he stored them in the warehouse at Olivia’s house, intending to leave the most luxurious Armor for Leon to try on for size.

There were also two sets of Knight Plate Armor.

One set was intact, taken from the imprisoned knight in the house behind Lokhak.

The other set was wrecked beyond recognition, torn from the corpse of the knight tortured by the Griffin, with only the leg Armor and helmet components still intact; the other parts were completely twisted and deformed.

Additionally, a pile of plate chain composite armors and a variety of Hired Cavalry Armors were heaped in the backyard, half of them destroyed.

Only fifteen complete sets of Armor could be patched together, some along with weapons temporarily given to a few surviving youths to wear, in case enemies who had escaped returned.

After recounting these valuable spoils of war, Lokhak went on excitedly, “While gathering those Armors and weapons, I also found a big pile of gold and silver coins from the Kantadar scum’s bags, now we really don’t have to worry about money.”

“But the money they stole, mixed with the villagers’ belongings, isn’t it inappropriate to take them?” Leon wondered.

“What are you thinking?

I wouldn’t touch the villagers’ things.

I picked out all the local currency used by Orland to keep for Olivia; I only took the money with the Kantadar emblems and writing,” Lokhak explained.

Leon realized he had indeed been foolish.

The villagers of Selva had not traded with the Kantadar people, so the enemy-marked currency in those bags was certainly the personal property of the Kantadar soldiers and wouldn’t be mistaken.

“How much is there, approximately?” he quickly asked.

“At least the value of over three hundred gold coins, stored in a small chest, right now it’s under Olivia’s bed,” Lokhak gestured proudly with his finger.

Well, there it was; he’d been sleeping on the floor last night, not far from a sizeable fortune.

As Leon listened item by item, he couldn’t help but feel numb inside.

Indeed, as Lokhak said, although it felt wrong to the deceased villagers…

objectively speaking, this disaster was a complete reversal of fate for the three of them.

Not to mention the value of those horses, Armor, and weapons, just the chest full of money straightaway turned them from vagabonds of the wilderness into wealthy men.

Strictly speaking, the majority of these spoils of war were the Griffin’s conquests.

But no doubt, His Majesty the noble Death Claw wouldn’t care about this filthy human money…

So, the windfall belonged to the three of them without reservation.

After chatting for a while, Lokhak also returned the Undead Noble’s Sword that he had been keeping to Leon.

Bidding goodbye to his companion, Leon returned to Olivia’s house.

He carefully made his way through the crowded lobby on the first floor, not disturbing the women and children who had fallen into a deep sleep, and came to the backyard alone.

Sure enough, he saw a mountainous accumulation of armor and weapons.

Lances meant for cavalry leaned against the wall, surrounded by piles of various armor parts laid out in disarray, and a few dozen sheathed swords were scattered on the ground.

He glanced at the stables not far away, where three magnificent noble warhorses were resting in the fenced sheds, their horse armor already removed.

Leon approached excitedly, his eyes beholding them as if seeing a beauty, unable to resist reaching out to touch one of the black horses.

The horse’s head shook uneasily, its nostrils flaring in agitation as it scented the unfamiliar person and couldn’t find its owner.

But the warhorse, after undergoing rigorous training from a young age, still did not resist the human before it.

The meticulously trimmed mane was smooth to the touch, and Leon admired the mount before him, seemingly identical to “horses” on Earth, yet belonging to this otherworld.

We might not be able to get our hands on a Death Claw, but having such a fine horse is quite a luxury.

In this world, still in the feudal era, possessing such a noble steed was similar to owning a top-tier sports car in modern Earth.

The warhorse’s body and limbs were filled with bulging muscles, exuding a sense of power, its shape and demeanor clearly much more robust than the horses from Leon’s previous life on Earth.

Not to mention, Leon hadn’t seen those Kantadar people with any accompanying supply carriages.

These warhorses were able to march in heavy armor while carrying fully armed Heavy Cavalry on their backs, and after long treks, they were still capable of charging into battle lines, their resilience and strength boundlessly astonishing.

But on second thought, to keep such a horse well-fed and not losing weight likely meant that the daily feed was also quite costly.

This was not unlike the expense of owning a car in his past life—easy enough to buy, but not necessarily easy to afford the upkeep.

“…

Luckily, your previous owner blew quite a few gold coins on me.” Leon finished indulging himself with the horse and turned to walk towards the storage in the backyard.

The door was unlocked.

He walked straight in and saw the set of Kantadar Noble Knight’s plate armor that Lokhak had mentioned.

The helmet adorned with a double snake carved headpiece, the meticulously fitted neck guard, the chest armor connecting hip swing and shoulder shields, the layered shoulder armor, arm armor, well-defined, articulable iron gloves and shin armor, iron boots.

The armor seemed to have a silver coating all over, shining brightly, its craftsmanship very exquisite, its style somewhat resembling the Gothic style of his previous world, yet distinctly different.

He picked up the chest armor with both hands and admired it for a moment.

Leon was very pleased with what he saw—this sturdy and ornate armor, once donned, would be unabashedly flamboyant.

Unfortunately, he didn’t have much liking for the snake carving on the helmet or the human face relief on the surface of the faceguard.

It had too strong a Kantadar feel to it.

Decorations symbolic of an enemy culture, even if artistically unproblematic, still made Leon feel uncomfortable.

If he were to use this armor regularly, he would definitely have to find someone to replace the headpiece and faceguard.

His gaze shifted to the complete armor liner and open-front black robe that lay beside him, and he eagerly wanted to try them on for fit.

After setting aside the Noble’s treasure sword at his waist, he picked up the lining and robe with one hand, giving them a shake.

However, spotting the emblem of the Kantadar family on the black robe, Leon tossed it aside with disgust, not wanting to touch it again.

In the future, he would just have to make a new set of robes.

After dressing in the lining, Leon began to try on the armor.

After inspecting the armor’s construction, although intricately designed, it did not seem to be the type that one could not wear alone; it would likely just take a bit more time.

Soon, the storehouse was filled with a series of clanking and bustling noises.

Halfway through the process, as Leon was sitting on a chest, turning his body awkwardly to try to hook the fastening mechanism that connected the shoulder armor to his back shoulder, a familiar voice came from the doorway.

“Let me help you.”

Hearing the sound of quick footsteps, he turned his head to see Olivia, now donning a crisp waist-cinched skirt.

“Thanks a lot.” Leon nodded.

Though he could attire himself alone, nothing was better than a helping hand.

Knight Masters always had Attendants to help them put on armor, it wasn’t as tough as doing it by himself.

“…

There are a few leather straps back here…”

Leon stood up, presenting his back to show the girl the structure of the armor’s joints under his shoulder and armpits.

Olivia stepped closer, lifting her hands to carefully fasten each leather strap and knob.

With the attentive girl’s help, Leon quickly donned the full set of armor.

He picked up the ornate treasure sword beside him, securing it, sheath and all, to the armed belt at his waist, and then tried walking a few steps, jumping with a clang.

Hmm…

it feels a bit loose inside.

After all, this body was still that of a sixteen-year-old, and his height was probably around one hundred seventy-five centimeters.

Compared to that tall, muscular, adult noble who appeared to be over one hundred eighty centimeters, there was quite a gap in physique.

But it wasn’t a big issue; armor was not meant to fit as closely as clothing, and a slightly different body build wouldn’t make it unusable.

Lowering his gaze at the beautiful and sturdy silver armor on his body and the Noble’s treasure sword at his waist that finally matched his garb, Leon was just a bit disappointed there was no mirror to see how flamboyant he looked at the moment, unsure if he resembled a legitimate Knight.

“How do I look?

Cool?” Leon couldn’t help but casually ask the girl, buoyed by his excitement at acquiring a luxurious set of armor.

“Cool?” Olivia didn’t quite grasp this pronunciation.

“Uh, I mean, do I look…

ah, never mind.” Leon calmed himself, deciding it was best not to try to explain.

This girl had just lost many familiar friends and fellow villagers, and it wasn’t appropriate for him to share his joy so abruptly at the moment.

“Did you come looking for me?” he asked instead.

The young girl nodded silently, “My father has awakened, he wishes to see you, to thank you.”
