Chapter 96: SHADOWS IN THE CORRIDOR
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: I MISS YOU ~ SOYOU (SISTAR)]
Kitanna couldn’t sleep the previous night; she rolled on the bed all night, feeling the touch of Nix on her bare skin. It was as if it ignited something inside her body; the thought of it made her stomach knot, and she felt heat forming between her legs.
Not waiting for the day to finally break, Kitanna dressed up to meet Larel and talk to her about the new emotions she was now feeling. On her way to the room, she bumped into someone. The person didn’t stop walking, as if she had not seen her. For some reason, Kitanna felt she had experienced this before, and the back of the person seemed somewhat familiar.
"Hey... You there, stop!" Kitanna called after the person, but they didn’t stop. She turned and ran after the person. She got to the pillar where she saw the person turn, but there was nobody there.
Kitanna rubbed her hair; she could swear she had seen the person’s back before, and the same person had passed her some time ago in the palace. She saw the maid coming from the other side and motioned for the maid to come.
"Did you see anyone walk from that place?" Kitanna pointed at where she last saw the person, and the maid shook her head.
Kitanna held the maid’s trembling shoulder, scanning the place they stood at the moment. From the corner of her eyes, she saw someone move from the shadows. Kitanna let go of the maid and ran in the direction she saw the shadow move. She escaped by a whisker, almost bumping into Bareea and her baby.
Kitanna tried to accustom her ears to know if there was another sound of anyone’s footsteps. But the small baby kept crying, making it difficult for her to pick any sound.
Kitanna glared at Bareea. "Feed the child, woman!" She said in a harsh voice.
"I have had him fed, but he keeps crying," Bareea spoke in a weak voice, eye bags below her eyes due to lack of sleep.
Kitanna didn’t hear what the concubine had said, as her eyes were still scouting her surroundings.
Someone pushed Kitanna aside and carried the child immediately; the princess turned to see the new person. It was Queen Larel, whom she had been on her way to see.
"This child’s body is hot. What have you been doing, Bareea? At least take care of your child." Larel, who heard from afar the child that was crying saw Kitanna standing with them. When the princess didn’t attempt to stop the child from crying, Larel had rushed to carry the child.
"You there! Bring warm water and a towel to the concubine’s room. Mix honey with lemon, bring it too." Larel ordered the maid who was passing by.
Kitanna, who was looking around, noticed the maid was Misam. She walked straight to Misam and held her neck, adding pressure to it.
Misam tried to bow her head, but Kitanna’s grip was too strong. "P-Princess Kitanna..." The maid trembled.
"It was you, right? You’re trying to mess with my head." Kitanna said in a low but angry tone.
Larel touched Kitanna softly, holding little Labre on the other hand. "Kitanna, what are you doing? Misam was the maid who served me this morning. Did she do something wrong?" The queen asked.
Kitanna turned to look at Larel, then back at Misam. If she was her maid this morning, then it wouldn’t be the same person she had seen. Could it be Bareea? Kitanna turned to look at Bareea, but her child would have made her presence known.
Kitanna stepped back, looking at the three persons standing in the corridor. Someone was messing with her mind again. She didn’t know who to trust. Before it was Axilla, Bareea, and Misam. Now Larel was involved in the cycle. The princess shook her head, trying to gather her thoughts.
And she ran out of the place, holding her chest tightly.
The person who had been watching her smiled and said in a low voice, "Run, princess... run mad, while chasing shadows."
Larel tilted her head when she saw Kitanna run out of the place as if she was in shock. She decided to take care of the child first and then look for the princess later.
"Get what I asked for. Don’t worry about the princess; she must have mistaken you for someone else." Larel said to Misam, whose head was bowed as she tried to fix herself up.
Misam nodded and left to bring what the queen had asked for. Leaving Larel and Bareea.
"Bareea, you are now a mother. Get your act straight!" Larel scolded the concubine.
Inside the room, Larel massaged the baby gently, reducing the high temperature, then feeding him with honey and lemon, with other herbs that were mixed in it. Finally, Labre fell asleep.
"What has got you skipping?" Larel asked after wrapping the child properly with warm sheets. She turned to face Bareea.
"How do I survive if it’s really true that King Khelan is not a true Morgair? I’ll be back to being a maid." Bareea said out her worries in a low voice.
Ever since the concubine heard the rumors, life had not been the same for her. She heard maids talk about her and how she would return to being a maid, which was her punishment for having an affair with the king. Bareea raised her face to look at Larel.
"Did you pray for me to be punished? Is this my punishment?" She asked, raising her voice slightly.
Larel finally understood what was bothering the concubine. "I won’t say that I wasn’t hurt by what happened; in fact, I hated you. But what is happening right now is not your fault or the child’s fault. Your child should be your only priority, not if you’ll still get to live in the palace or not."
"What use will the child be if his father is no longer king? I only agreed to birth him because of the title. I should have scrapped—" the sharp sound of a slap landed on Bareea’s face, and it was from Larel.
"Don’t you dare say such words in front of your child again! Do you think having a child is easy? If it was easy for me, do you think you’d be here?" Larel couldn’t control her emotions; it caused tears to flow from her face.
"I thought the child would cleanse your soul, but it only appears that a person can never change once they bite the evil fruit of greed. Next time I come to see your child in that condition, I will have him taken away from you." Saying this, Larel walked out of the room, searching for the princess who looked like she was in a trance earlier.
Larel’s blood was still boiling. How could a mother say such a thing about her own child? The young queen asked herself sadly, walking through the palace passage.
