Kitanna entered her room with Larel walking beside her. Nix had already left for his quarters with Chantal with him.
"How was your trip? Was it a fruitful one?" Larel asked when they were now sitting inside the room.
"It was indeed fruitful. What about you? I know you haven’t been having it very easy in my absence. I noticed even Bareea now shows her fangs," Kitanna smiled at the sudden boldness exerted by the concubine.
"I’ve been doing just fine. Bareea hasn’t been doing well herself. I heard some of the maids still gossip in the corners about her," Larel’s face marred with worry as she spoke.
Kitanna nudged the queen a little. "Oh my, look at that. You’re worried about her?" She knew very well that Larel only believed that there is good in everyone.
Larel tucked her hair behind her ear and laughed awkwardly. "She’s still pregnant. It’ll only stress the baby if the mother is worried. I might not know what it feels like, but as a woman, I’m just saying," she said in a low tone.
Larel had tried to hate the unborn child and the mother for making her marriage a mess. Especially when Bareea started becoming a bully, Larel forced herself to spite the woman, but she just couldn’t. She then realized it was not even Bareea’s fault. Before the maid, now concubine, came into the picture, her life was already miserable, courtesy of the queen dowager.
Kitanna nodded her head. It was true; the child Bareea was yet to be born had done nothing wrong. She didn’t have anything against the unborn child, except that she felt bad the baby would be caught in the crossfire of the battle it knows nothing about.
"What about your personal guard?" Larel asked.
Kitanna thought of Nix. "He should be in his quarters. We came back with someone. Let me give you the details of our journey..." She smiled excitedly.
Away from the main palace, right inside the isolated quarters of the palace which belonged to the silver hair royal guard, Chantal stood inside the room, his eyes moving around the corners. The room was very big, with few designs, but they appeared decent, with candle lights at each pillar to help illuminate the room.
"Why do you stay far away from the place? Are you like an outcast?" Chantal trailed his eyes, judging the man. He always had this look of superiority on his face, which sometimes annoyed him. It wouldn’t be news if he was really an outcast; he talks briefly like he was wasting his breath on people, then there’s his peculiar blue eyes and silver hair.
"What is that look?" Nix questioned. It was the same man who had his face turned to a ripe tomato when he heard a simple comment; now the same young man was judging him with his eyes.
Chantal shook his head as he waved his hand. "Nothing, I like it here." He smiled, scratching his hair gently. He asked again when he remembered something.
"The princess, is something going around here? The air was heavy when she arrived. Was it her mother? The slim woman with strip gray hair, with lots of jewelry. I think she’s very beautiful." Chantal chatted without stopping.
Nix sighed; he thought the young man was someone who only kept to himself. That was why he had agreed to keep him close to him. He didn’t expect this chattering. "You need a haircut, after dinner." That was all he said before stepping out of the room. Nix didn’t know how long he’d last with the unending questions.
"Does he always ignore people’s question? I’m very sure nobody likes him around here. How does a haircut answer everything I just said?" Chantal looked at the direction Nix walked out from, and he kicked the air in frustration.
"I need to know how the palace works to do better, not a haircut!" He dropped his horse skin bag and walked around the room. When he got to the mirror, he touched his face slightly.
"Maybe I do need a haircut," Chantal whispered.
.....
Few days after Kitanna’s return, she didn’t attack immediately, and this kept Almaria and Deonisia on their toes. They didn’t know the ace card the princess had and when she was going to attack, so they stayed low, refusing to make any move as it might only end with them shooting themselves in the foot.
As promised, Kitanna was in no mood to pretend to be a loyal daughter. She didn’t bother to have breakfast with them anymore; she had her meal inside her room with Larel.
The palace had light from the candles and the sun, and in the evening warm light from the moon making it appear peaceful. But if one looked closely, it only appeared gloomy, like there was a silent battle lurking in the dark waiting to be unleashed.
Bareea was one of the persons who didn’t look closely; she lived out her days as the first concubine, punishing maids as she deemed.
She enjoyed the alluring taste of power so much that it intoxicated her more than the sweetest of wines.
"Where are you sending those things to?" The first concubine questioned the maid who was carrying a fruit basket. Without allowing the maid to answer her, she said again.
"Do you not know the fruits in this palace belong to me? The child needs it." Bareea rubbed her tummy gently; if it was Larel that sent the maid to get fruits, then she wasn’t going to allow it.
Bareea moved her hands to push the maid who was carrying the basket when she heard a voice speak from behind,
"I just can’t like you, Bareea." Kitanna pursed her lips in irritation. "You always act like the dirt you rose up from; can’t you help it?"
The princess fired again; this time Bareea clenched her fists.
She wanted to speak back, but she was afraid of the princess, in particular, among everyone in the palace. "You should not speak to me that way, Princess Kitanna. I just respect you; that is why I am not reacting." Bareea spoke through her teeth.
Kitanna waved for the maid who was still standing there. "Carry the fruit to my room," as the maid finally walked out, leaving just the two of them in the passage. Kitanna focused her eyes on the girl.
"You were saying?" Not allowing her to answer, Kitanna said casually, "I don’t accept respect from people who have cursed me out a thousand times in their mind; it’s of no use." She remarked.
"Don’t try what you did today; if there will be a next time." With this, Kitanna turned to leave when she heard the first concubine speak.
"Why do you hate me so much? You were the one who told me not to let my past define me. And found myself with an opportunity, I took hold of it." Bareea reminded the princess of her words.
Kitanna turned to look at the young woman. "You don’t need to remind me of my words; I know what I said. But only because I thought you regretted your life before now and you sought for atonement. You just became worse; have you ever put yourself in the shoes of Larel?"
Kitanna pursed; her eyes trailed down to look at Bareea’s heavy stomach
"Power which intoxicates always leaves you hanging dry."
The princess left the concubine alone, but she didn’t go far because the next moment Bareea shrieked.
Bareea looked down; between her legs, water tripped down, and she felt her lower abdomen contract, the words she heard from the princess ringing in her head adding to the contraction she was also having.
Bareea held onto her stomach and shouted again.
"No! Don’t do this to me!" Kitanna cursed under her breath; why was it when it was just them alone in the passage. She ran back and held the concubine’s waist firmly.
"Breathe, Bareea," Kitanna rubbed the young girl’s back gently. She was not a professional, but she knew the baby was about to come.
Soon, the royal physician was summoned; everyone within the palace walls anticipated the baby. Khelan paced in front of the room, and each scream from Bareea he tried to enter but was stopped by the assisting female physicians.
Almaria and Deonisia stayed close to the room, but they didn’t say anything.
Kitanna stood there with her back to the pillar, of all days it was just when they were alone that the baby decided to come along. Good thinking.
The royal physician rushed out of the room, his face covered in sweat because of the tedious work going on in the room.
"What happened? How’s the baby?" Khelan questioned immediately receiving a glare from his mother; he kept shut and allowed the physician to speak.
Kitanna scoffed; it was about the baby. Only if Bareea knew she was going to be tossed to the side after now.
"The baby is coming out five days earlier than the expected date; it’s a little difficult. We should pray for the mother and child," the royal physician bowed and disappeared inside the room.
Almaria turned to look at Kitanna with a glare when she heard it was Kitanna who brought Bareea. She found it suspicious.
"What did you do to the child? Why were you with her when her water broke?" The queen dowager asked.
Kitanna rolled her eyes; this was what she was worried about too. Everyone will only accuse her if anything should happen to the baby. "I’m asking myself the same question too," she muttered, and she prayed for the safety of the child.
As the sun began to turn red, making way for a cooler natural light from the moon. A child’s cry was heard from inside the room.
Bareea had born a son, a healthy-looking baby boy.
The news was spread immediately, that there was a new member of the royal family.
