Chapter 74: PLAYING DIRTY

Nix heard heavy knocks on his door; he got up from his bed and pushed open the door. He didn’t know what had happened to the princess, and he didn’t care to know. Whatever had her looking the way she was at the moment was not something ordinary.

Nix dragged her inside with one pull before he closed the door; he noticed someone move from the shadows. To check out the person would only result in leaving a vulnerable princess who ran to him for help. Nix thought it was wiser to know what was going on first.

Kitanna stood at the point where she was dragged; her feet and whole body kept trembling in fear. What she had seen earlier looked too real to be a dream; even her breathing was laboured, she felt like her head was still dipped inside the water. The thought of it made her bring her hand close to her chest.

Nix narrowed his eyes when he noticed the girl was still scared despite running to him for safety. It means that anything that had happened really scared the hell out of her. For Kitanna to look this shaken, it was not something to be taken lightly.

Nix made the first move; he gently stroked her hair, trying to calm the princess down. He rested his other hand on her shoulder reassuringly. It was to tell her that she was now in safe hands.

"Princess Kitanna, I’m here; nothing is going to happen to you." Nix continued to stroke her hair until she finally calmed down.

Kitanna raised up her head, which she held low since she stepped inside the room; her breathing, which was initially haphazard, slowly regulated. She sucked in fresh air through her mouth.

"Nix, I...I’m scared, I don’t think I want to remember. T-he woman, she said...if I tried to come back or remember, she would kill me. S-she knew I was trying to get my memory back. Nix, they tried to kill me, I couldn’t breathe, my head was held underwater. It was not a dream, I almost died." The panic attack set in again, and Kitanna gripped her clothes tightly.

"Kitanna, breathe." Nix moved closer to her, hugging her gently. His jaw ticked when he saw just how vulnerable the incident made Kitanna.

"Kitanna, all you have to do is listen to my voice. It was just a dream; nobody will hurt you. Not while I’m breathing. Now breathe for me." Nix whispered again, his large hands rubbing her back tenderly.

This time, Kitanna focused on the deep voice that belonged to Nix. And it did the magic; her breathing began to steady again, and slowly she opened the eyes she had shut close when Nix pulled her into a hug. That was when she noticed her face was crushed on his sturdy bare chest.

Kitanna, who had run inside straight to Nix’s room at the first thought of her being in danger, did not bother to put on anything over her small nightwear. When she finally regained her consciousness, she felt a little shy.

Nix moved away from the hug as he heard her heartbeat steady in a normal rhythm. He moved back to have a closer look at the girl, checking if she was hurt somewhere during her race to his room. His eyes trailed to her bare feet; she ran all the way to his room with nothing on her feet. His eyes narrowed againh, the thought of her being seen by other persons in this state did not sit well with him.

"Go sit; let me clean the small cuts on your leg." Nix ordered, but he was surprised to receive a look of protest from the princess. His eyebrows raised questioningly.

Kitanna pulled her legs closer to herself, her hands wrapping her whole body, trying to cover up herself. For him to treat her leg, she had to raise it up for him, and her night garment was just too small. It was at that moment she noticed that Nix was wearing a long robe which did not hide his muscular chest, and his pants were loosely hanging on his waist, his hair looking a little ruffled than the usual neat pattern it was styled. The ruffled nature made him seem like someone who fell out of a painting. He looked perfect. Kitanna, who was lost ogling the guard in front of her, forgot the reason she even ran to the room in the first place.

Nix narrowed his eyes when he saw the girl move back and refuse to be treated. And for some reason, her mind seemed occupied with something else.

"Feeling shy now. Are we?" Nix asked, breaking Kitanna away from her lustful thoughts and bringing her back to reality.

She shook her head when the question was asked. And there was just something about the way Nix spoke to her that made the knot in her stomach tighten. She gulped softly.

"If you are done playing modest, go seat there. Let me get something to clean your leg with." Nix turned his back and stepped inside the room.

Kitanna’s shoulder dropped when he left; she started walking to the chair when she felt something prick her feet harshly. This caused her to wince in pain falling down; she held the foot that the pain came from.

Nix rushed out of the room with a small box and a shirt hanging on his neck. He found the girl sitting helplessly on the ground. Nix carried her up, moving her hand to his shoulder; he lifted her like she weighed less than the shirt on his neck.

He had intended on carrying her to a chair, but he changed his mind and carried her into his bedroom, where he placed her gently on the bed. Bringing forward the shirt that was on his neck, he put it over Kitanna’s head and dropped it down. What served as a shirt to Nix appeared to be a dress on Kitanna’s small body. This helped Kitanna cover her upper thighs; she felt touched at the thoughtfulness of Nix over little things.

Nix pulled a small stool and sat on it, picking up Kitanna’s leg he found a small thorn stuck deep inside her foot. It was impossible for someone to run with such an injury considering the fact that she ran all the way from the main palace. His jaw clenched in anger. Does this woman even know she’s a woman not to talk of a princess at that? She always does whatever she wanted.

"Why are you so careless?" The question was meant for only Nix, as he didn’t say it for her hearing.

Kitanna watched as her wounds were being tended to so carefully and ever gently. Even when she trained as a black Rose, nobody ever tended to her wounds unless she was discharged, then Clephas took care of her. But that was always after her injuries must have healed by themselves. Having someone care for her leg like it was the most precious thing touched her.

Kitanna shriveled when she saw Nix bend down to blow air on the wound he had tended to. She tried to keep her composure, but then Nix raised his face, and his blue eyes didn’t look away, yet his lips blew air on her feet. The sight in front of her was just too alluring that Kitanna didn’t know when she let out a soft moan.

After cleaning her leg, Nix finally let go of her. He was worried that whatever chased her out of the main palace has broken her, but he was glad to see that his presence helped her forget the nightmare she had.

Nix knew that the palace was only filled with evil, but he did not know they’d go to the extent of playing mind games with the princess. He did not need to ask to know exactly what happened, with the little words Kitanna said and with the shadow he saw in the dark. He joined the dots and knew exactly what was going on. The queen dowager and her cohorts were now playing dirty. Pushing the princess aside from what rightfully belonged to her wasn’t enough; they now caused her to have nightmares.

Nix tucked the princess in bed and joined to lay beside her.

Kitanna felt relieved when she saw Nix lie down close to her, the bad memories she had seen which scared her slowly started to fade. Her eyes gradually turned groggy, and before they closed, she said in a tired voice.

"Nix, can you sleep with me every night?"

Nix turned to look at the princess, who had shut her eyes close, drifting to sleep. She must have really been tired.

His eyes looked at how fragile and small she was now looking. Kitanna always did and said what she liked, without weighing her words. Nix smiled, pulling her closer to his chest. And as expected, Kitanna welcomed his presence snuggling into his embrace.
