Chapter 72: THE FORGOTTEN ONE

As days passed, so did the bump on Bareea’s tummy increase. It was over half a moon since the announcement of a new mistress was made, and Bareea was moved to stay in the chamber close to the king. A new chair was added in every room in the palace to accommodate the first concubine.

Larel spent most of her days inside, and she stopped joining in the family breakfast. Khelan gave orders for her not to be disturbed until she felt better. The same people who whispered in the shadows against Bareea, calling her a home breaker, also rumored that Queen Larel was filled with spite and jealousy, and that her hairs were now falling off, which was why she no longer stepped outside.

During these periods of fake news flying around, the investigation of the murder of the head maid was forgotten and brushed under the carpet. Axilla was left inside the prison waiting for her execution day to finally arrive.

Bareea sat inside her room dressed in the best silk and expensive jades, just like a queen, but none of these helped in making her happy. Her days in the palace became lonelier than ever; nobody wanted to associate themselves with her anymore, even the maids she used to be friends with.

She heard the whispers among the maids, about how she had seduced the king and betrayed the good queen. When the head maid found out about it, she used violence to silence the woman. Bareea was accused of everything going wrong in the palace.

Ever since she was moved into the main palace, next to the king, the king neither spoke to her, not even during breakfast or visited her.

The door to her room opened; Bareea stood up immediately, and when she saw it was the princess, she moved forward and bowed deeply.

"Bareea, you know in rank you’re now higher than I am. You should not rush to stand every time you see me," Kitanna said with a serious look. She heard all the ill gossips about the maid; she decided not to step up for her until she learned her lesson.

"I’m sorry," Bareea bowed again.

Kitanna watched the young woman in pity. Sometimes the power you so desperately seek would only cause you sadness, the princess thought.

"How are you and the baby doing?" She asked, moving her hand to touch the small bump.

Bareea smiled, touched by the princess’s concern. It was just nil persons who actually asked how she felt. To be frank, she didn’t ask to be here; she just wished she could go back in time and not be the one the king saw that night.

"Don’t think too much; it’s not good for the baby." Kitanna, who noticed the young woman was lost in her thoughts, said softly.

Bareea sniffled, and then nodded her head. She moved to a side to allow the princess to step in further into her room. It was her first time having a visitor ever since she became a concubine.

"I hope your room was decorated to your taste?" Kitanna turned to look at the intricate designs used to design the room wallpapers.

"I’m grateful to even have a roof over my head after what I’ve done." Bareea bowed, her voice was really sincere.

Kitanna stared at the used-to-be maid but now first concubine. She had allowed her to feel all the guilt, and now she wanted to be there for her. Moreover, it was not entirely her fault, so she didn’t deserve to be punished for the rest of her life.

"You don’t need to be so modest. I’m glad you know what you did so wrong. We can work with that," the princess smiled, before walking to sit down.

"I’m honored by your visit Princess Kitanna." Bareea bowed once they were seated.

Kitanna nodded her head in acknowledgment; she was here to give hope to the young woman but also she came for another reason.

"Tomorrow is the execution of Axilla. I came to ask you if you saw anything on that day that might be of help, so we don’t end up spilling innocent blood," the sharp eyes of Kitanna watched every movement from Bareea.

And she noticed her gulp nervously; it seemed like Bareea really did see or even know something about that day.

"Bareea, a piece of advice that is unasked for, again."

"Don’t live a life your child will regret. The first time is called ignorance, the second is a mistake. But the third time becomes a lifestyle." The princess didn’t need to listen anymore. Kitanna was someone impatient when she sensed that she was being lied to.

And not only that, she knew exactly what had been going on in the palace. During her time of trying to regain her memory with the help of Nix. She mostly stayed inside her quarters, and she saw that Bareea was always visiting the queen dowager.

Without waiting for Bareea to respond, Kitanna popped a seedless grape into her mouth, sucking it slowly with her witty eyes on Bareea for a moment. She stood up and exited the room.

....

Axilla felt the weight of the wood tied to her hand pull her down, making her feel very weak. But she couldn’t complain; all she had to do was endure it. The days passed so quickly since she was locked inside the deepest part of the prison.

She lost track of time, not knowing what was going on in the outside world. Axilla felt blind. With no one to talk to inside the prison, she spent her time scribbling on the walls with the stone she found lying on the prison floor.

Axilla raised her eyes when the door opened and two guards stepped inside to drag her away. The day had finally arrived for her to be executed after she was thrown into a room with no ray of light and forgotten by everyone.

As she was dragged out to the execution ground, Axilla noticed there was another female held by the guards. The prisoner’s hair was very long and unkempt, covering part of her face. But she kept struggling to be released; the peculiar thing was that the person was not making coherent speech.

Axilla felt pity for the person; maybe it was someone also accused wrongly like herself.

The moment Axilla stepped out of the prison room, the light from the sun rays, which was too harsh, caused her to shut her eyes tight.

At the execution ground, the royal family members gathered, and Khelan gave out the order for the person in charge to cut down the culprit who was still tied to the wood.

The man raised his sword, ready to cut her down. Out of fear, the prisoner mumbled, trying to shout for help, but nothing was coming out from her lips.

"I think staying in the prison for too long takes away their talking ability." Almaria muttered to herself.

Kitanna, who was sitting close by, heard this but she ignored the queen dowager and turned to face where the execution was really taking place.

Immediately the maid’s head was severed from her body, the body was carried out of the place. Some maids were called to clean up the blood.

"This is a warning to anyone who tries to shed other people’s blood. The criminal Axilla has been punished for her sins." Khelan addressed those who cared to listen.

After the execution, Kitanna walked to the place the body was being wrapped; if anyone should see her from behind, they would only assume she was mourning the maid.

Larel joined the princess; they stood side by side looking at the body with so much interest.

"She tried to speak; it’s sad she couldn’t." Kitanna moved back a little so the blood won’t touch her dress.

"How did you find her?" Larel asked in what sounded like a whisper.

Kitanna raised her hands to her face; it looked like she was drying her tears but she was shedding her face from the harsh sun. The princess turned to look at the queen dowager who still watching her, then her eyes trailed to look at Bareea.

Kitanna sniffled, and turned back to look at Larel with a grin plastered on her face. The breeze blew gently, opening the body that was being wrapped. It was not Axilla who laid there; rather, it was Calissa.

"I totally forgot about her, but I had a feeling that one day she will pay for her sins. I didn’t know she will pay for it in a useful way." Kitanna said to the queen, who was looking amzaed at the wittiness of the young princess.

Few days back Kitanna had sent Larel a letter to prepare a carriage that will send Axilla out of the palace while she handled the execution. Larel was scared of being caught, so she stayed inside most of the time trying to think of a good plan.

"Cry, Queen Larel, we need to look very sad. They’re watching." Kitanna turned again; this time tears flowed freely from her eyes, which were filled with mischief.

Calissa was the maid who had tried to assassinate the king on his wedding eve. Kitanna caught her first, after finding out that she had come to kill Khelan after already killing an old widow to hide her identity.

Calissa has tried to talk but was not able to, because of what Kitanna did to her tongue, and the princess felt no remorse for it.
