Chapter 68: AT THE END OF THE DAY

Kitanna stood in front of Nix; she couldn’t think up a reason why she didn’t want to shed when it was her turn as a black Rose. To her, it just didn’t feel right.

Nix decided to let her go sleep for some time. Getting her memory back was not something that should be done in haste owing to the fact that she was made to take numerous potions that messed up with her entire memory.

The next morning, which arrived quickly, Nix walked to the prison. It was time to question the suspect. His shoes were heard clearly on the palace marble floor.

When he got to the holding cell, he ordered the guards to bring the three suspects out and give them food before he proceeds with his questioning. After they were ready, the first to be questioned was Bareea.

Bareea was feeling weaker than the day before; she tried to hold her ground but her head felt dizzy and weak.

Nix noticed how pale the woman was looking; he called in a physician to check on her before he stars his interrogation.

The physician took Bareea’s hands checked her pulse, then gave her a liquid to sip. When Bareea took this, she threw it up immediately.

The physician called Nix to talk to him privately.

"Lord Nix, that lady is carrying a baby in her womb," the words came out as a surprise to Nix. He turned to look at the maid; it was normal for maids to spend their time with palace officials, but the officials were advised not to spread their seeds. So the maids were given herbs that stopped them from getting pregnant.

"Are you sure about this?" Nix turned to ask the physician, and he received a bow as a response.

"You can leave now," Nix waved for the man to leave the place. He walked back to where the maid was sitting.

"You are pregnant," Nix broke the news casually, his eyes looking at every reaction that will come from the maid.

First, it was surprise, then shock, and later fear. Bareea tried to compose herself, but it was not working, especially in front of Nix. She was happy when she found out it was Nix that was going to be in charge of the questioning. But she didn’t expect such news, and not only that. Nix was the first person to hear about it; her face turned red in shame.

"Which official is it? Did the head maid find out about it, and you decided to keep her from talking?" Nix questioned.

Bareea widened her eyes in shock; that was not the case. How did her whole story turn around to this. "No! Lord Nix! I didn’t do it. I am only just finding out now that I am pregnant. And it’s for the k-" Bareea stopped talking. She bit her inner cheek.

Nix noticed everything; he dropped the ink he was using to write. Things were suddenly getting interesting; he looked at the girl without breaking his gaze for a minute. "It’s for who?" He asked.

"Think before you answer me; lying will be your thoughtlessness on how sharp the blade is, and its ability to end you in a minute. Speak," Nix said meaning every word he spoke.

The maid hesitated for sometime, she was scared on how to break the news. She finally opened her lips to talk,

"It’s for the K-king," Bareea said in a calmy, her voice shaking. She raised her face to look at Nix. "Lord Nix, I can explain; I didn’t love him, he asked me to follow him, I had no choice"

Bareea tried to explain, just maybe the royal guard who she loved so much will also love her back. But with the way things were going, it was just not going to work for her.

Nix waved to one of the guards, and he ordered them to release Bareea; if she was pregnant and it was a royal seed she had to be released until she gives birth then she can be investigated.

The next person to be questioned was Misam.

"Let me hear everything that happened that morning" Nix did not want to waste any more time.

Misam explained how she stepped into the kitchen with other maids, and she saw the head maid leave the kitchen. She helped the princess in the kitchen, then left after she was through, and that was the last time she had seen Lady Aggie.

Nix dismissed her, and called for Axilla being the last to be questioned.

Axilla couldn’t stop tears from falling down her face, "White Lord," she bowed.

Nix nodded acknowledging her greetings, "Axilla, someone said you came to call Lady Aggie because the princess wanted to speak with her, is this true?" Nix asked.

"Yes, I did." Axilla replied, her voice already sounding weak.

"The princess was serving breakfast at that time." Nix moved his head to a side.

"I don’t know how it happened White Lord, but I was told by the princess to call Lady Aggie to the kitchen." Axilla replied.

"Did the princess say this to you herself?" Nix asked.

"No, I got a paper from the princess," the young girl said, her eyes widened when she realized what was going on.

Nix nodded confirming her fear, "I’m guessing you don’t have the paper anymore and you don’t remember who it was who gave you the paper" he sighed and dropped his ink.

The suspects were assembled in front of the royal family to conclude the result of the questioning.

Axilla felt her heart race with every passing moment; all evidence pointed that she was the main culprit. She turned her eyes and saw the princess, but there was no expression on her face.

"Nix, are we gathered here because we now have our culprit?" Almaria asked impatiently.

Nix stood up from his seat, "The investigation will be delayed because one of the suspects is carrying a royal seed" there was no filter in the way he announced the news.

At first, the members of the royal family did not understand what was going on, when they realized what Nix meant it came as a shock to all of them.

Larel turned to look at Khelan, "What is he talking about?" She asked in a low voice, but she didn’t receive any response from Khelan.

Almaria turned to look at his son; she couldn’t believe he went as low as to leave his seed in a maid. She bowed her face in disappointment.

Lady Deonisia, who was not moved by the news, turned to look at Nix. "That doesn’t have to stop the investigation. Tell everyone who the culprit is. We can solve the issue between the royal family later." She tried to ease the tension.

Nix knew it was going to be moved aside like this; he opened his mouth to talk when two maids stepped inside the courtroom holding something.

They bowed to the royal family and raised what they held. "We found this in Axilla’s room, and it belonged to the late head maid Aggie." This revelation caused a little commotion.

Nix narrowed his eyes when he heard this, he turned to look at Axilla. Without making any expression he allowed everything to flow on it’s own natural cause.

Khelan who was waiting for an opportunity to step out of the place, stood up immediately and said, "That ends the investigation. The maid Axilla will be executed during the next moon." He said this and walked out of the place.

He was followed behind by Larel and Almaria who wanted answers to the shocking news they just heard.

Misam and Bareea were released while Axilla who was not sure how and why everything was happening so fast was dragged away.

Kitanna sat on her position, her eyes moved from Nix then to Axilla. Before she rose up and left the place. It was going to be a long day in the palace especially for Larel and Khelan.
