Chapter 65: FRIEND’S BETRAYAL
Chapter 65: FRIEND’S BETRAYAL
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: DOWNPOUR ~ I.O.I]
Nix motioned for the last three speakers to come forward; he wanted to end the interrogation quickly. It was obvious that most of them were lying. Among the last three, there were two maids and one guard.
The first to speak was the guard. He followed the protocol of greetings and started, "I was going back to my duty post after answering the call of nature when I heard from the kitchen two persons arguing about something, then I heard a loud crash. I didn’t proceed to check, but I heard someone scream a name. The name I heard was Bareea." The guard bowed when he was done talking.
The next maid started to talk, "I was meant to join in serving breakfast, but because I had caught a cold, I was relieved of my duties. I saw Axilla walk towards the kitchen with the head maid, but she didn’t enter inside with her. She turned and left, when the head maid opened the kitchen door to step inside, I saw someone; and it was maid Misam. Lady Aggie walked inside the kitchen and closed the door" The maid said with surety. She was not someone to imagine things and she knew exactly what she saw.
Nix nodded his head and also recorded this statement. The final person to speak stepped up and bowed.
"I went to the kitchen to get a glass of water; I met lady Aggie and Misam talking, I think it was about preparing lunch. Then after they were done talking, I saw Misam leave. When I was about to step out, Axilla entered the kitchen," This was the final statement of the last maid.
Nix nodded his head to everything; he asked the ten persons to join back in the crowd. He folded everything he had recorded before he stood up to address everyone.
"Those who came out today to speak, it will be to your great advantage if you go back and think of the statements you made today. If it comes out that you lied, you’ll be punished as much as the offender. I will take it that everyone is still in shock; hence, the few nonsense you sprouted. Take a day, and think properly then come and let me know your final words. Until then, I think today’s interrogation is over." Nix turned and bowed slightly to the royal family.
His words caused Kitanna to smile; he just ended the whole statement which was evidently filled with lies in one sentence. That was exactly why she was drawn to Nix.
Khelan, who was not sure how to handle the case, agreed with Nix and ended the questioning session. Everyone was called to go back to their duties, leaving behind the royal family and Nix.
"Nix, if you don’t investigate the princess, people will suspect. Most of the fingers pointed at her today." Almaria suggested.
"If the king gave me the duty, that is because he knows I’m capable. I will be sure to get answers." Nix said without directly responding the way Almaria wanted him to respond.
Almaria wanted him to lock the princess up too as a suspect. But he was not a puppet; he was Nix. And he only did what he deemed right.
Inside the queen dowager’s chamber, Almaria sat with her legs folded. She furrowed her brows in anger.
"How dare she try to go back on her words? If the message didn’t come to us this morning that Aggie was going to betray us, Kitanna would have known everything I tried to keep her away from. That little! After everything I did for Aggie. I moved her up from the lowest ranked maid to the head maid and she has the bile to cross me?" Almaria hit the table out of annoyance.
Deonisia, who was watching Almaria out of boredom, closed her eyes when the table vibrated due to the impact caused from the sudden hit.
"Quit being dramatic, Almaria. It was avoided, wasn’t it? Even if Kitanna comes to find out about it, nobody will believe her. How can she say that her mother isn’t her mother? Everyone who knows the truth no longer lives in our world. She will be tagged a princess who lost her mind." Deonisia stated, and it was pure fact.
Kitanna had nobody to attest that she was not really Almaria’s child; the last person who knew the secret apart from Almaria, Deonisia, and the high priestess was Aggie, and she was no more. The royal seal was in the possession of Khelan and Almaria, so there was absolutely nothing Kitanna could do about the information than to cry her eyes out, mourning her actual family.
Almaria smiled, "That is very true. Nobody will ever believe her. I was just scared for nothing." She said with her eyes were filled with evil and mischief.
"We should worry about how to get our little mouse out of there. I wonder how she got roped in that. She is always smooth with her actions." Deonisia narrowed her eyes. When she found her spy among the suspects, it got her a little shaken.
"I thought making Nix the lead investigator will make it easier after I had already put in good alibis for the mouse, but it seems like people saw her. I will let Nix know, so he can just let her off the hook." Almaria said, inhaling softly.
"Did you get me the information I asked for, about Nix? For now, don’t let him know; let’s see how the investigation goes. We can abandon the mouse if things get messy." Deonisia’s words were plain without emotions.
Almaria turned to look at her cousin; she was always known to be brutal and heartless. It made the queen dowager wonder if she will also be abandoned by her one day.
"Why do you have that look? You think I’m evil; we should be talking about you who didn’t hesitate to silence her very good friend over a secret. Aggie was the one who got you into the palace, remember?" Deonisia sneered.
This had Almaria stiffen. She was trying her best to forget that there was once a time she and Aggie were very close. It was the first time she arrived at Morado. Aggie fed her and gave her shelter. Until she passed the palace exam and became a maid, even in those days Aggie still treated her like they were sisters.
"If we think about it, you betrayed your own friend just to keep your position. So don’t give me that look. You are the worst of evil." Deonisia said with a disgusted look on her face.
"She was going to betray me first. There is no friendship in this struggle. Friendship is another name for weakness; I paid her back for the kindness she had shown me and she tried to pay me back by snitching. I will step on anyone who dares to bring me down." Almaria clenched her fist. She tried to keep away the guilt that was beginning to form in her heart.
