Chapter 56: CROWNED CLOWN

[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: MIRROR ~ LIL WAYNE FT BRUNO MARS]

Khelan stood in front of the door that led to Larel’s room, contemplating whether to enter or not. He paced back and forth, causing the guards and maids behind him to follow his lead.

Finally, Khelan entered the room, but Larel was not inside. He sighed and turned to leave when he saw her standing in front of the door.

He was startled because he wasn’t expecting her to be there. Khelan couldn’t bring himself to start talking, his eyes darted left and right.

"My King," Larel bowed.

Khelan searched her face for any welcoming smile, but there was none. He cleared his throat and said, "My queen, I guess you were a bit startled with today’s event. You see, it’s not always like this, and mother and Kit play such extreme games sometimes. You will get used to it," he said, grinning from ear to ear.

Larel, who had decided to erase the day’s event from her mind, just couldn’t because of the way Khelan was talking. She shook her head in disappointment.

"A bit startled? Get used to it, you say?" The irritation Larel tried to suppress appeared on her face.

"A man was dying, let’s not even talk about that a wild boar was released knowing fully well the princess was unarmed!" Larel couldn’t help but raise her voice.

"Larel, but the man didn’t die. Even if he did, he’s just a mere guard. Do you know how many guards we lose every day? And just like mother said, we were in the woods; we won’t stop wild animals from enjoying nature," Khelan said, moving closer to comfort his wife.

Larel moved back, her face scrunched in disgust. If given an opportunity, she would spit on the man in front of her.

"Khelan! Are you listening to yourself right now? We were in the woods? That forest was not so deep to have a boar just roaming around. It was let free by someone, and you know exactly who it was! And you’re asking me how many guards we lose every day? Are you not supposed to be the king? The life of everyone in your kingdom should matter to you. Don’t you get it?" Larel shouted out of frustration; her whole body trembled in anger.

Khelan was taken aback with way Larel spoke to him, he have never seen her lose her cool before.

"I will tolerate your uncultured attitude just for today, because you seem a little shaken by today’s activities. Don’t ever raise your voice at me." Khelan said.

"What do you mean someone let the boar free? What are you insinuating?" He asked.

Larel stood her ground, her eyes staring at Khelan who is supposedly the king and aman that will father her unborn children in the future. If time could be reversed, she wouldn’t have agreed to the marriage.

"That’s it. All you do is hide behind your moth..." Larel didn’t finish her sentence, as Khelan slapped her face harshly, causing her to lose her balance and fall hard on the floor.

"I have warned you already, do not mention my mother’s name again. I won’t tolerate that!" Khelan angrily stomped out of the room, leaving Larel still in a state of shock.

Larel held her face as tears rolled down freely from her eyes. She couldn’t believe what had just happened. After a few minutes of gathering her thoughts, Larel stood up from the floor and picked up the things that fell when she lost her balance.

She stopped and scoffed, "What was I expecting from a man that allowed his own sister to be degraded to maid level?" Larel said to herself while picking up the glass pieces.

One of the maids entered the room and bowed, "Queen Larel, the king said you should get ready for dinner," the maid said softly.

Larel nodded her head and walked into the closet to get changed.

...

Khelan, who was fuming with anger, made his way to his mother’s room. Before he could enter the queen dowager’s chamber, he bumped into a maid who was stepping out of the room.

"I’m sorry, my king," Bareea bowed her head in fear.

Khelan ignored the girl and continued to walk when he suddenly stopped.

"You, follow me," he pointed at the maid.

Bareea, who was also afraid, quickly followed the king without hesitation. She feared that he was on his way to punish her because the king looked like he was in a very bad mood.

Her thoughts started to change when she saw them heading to the king’s private chamber. Bareea had a lot of thoughts running through her mind but she could not say anything.

Khelan got to his room and dismissed all the guards and maids, except Bareea, who was now aware of the reason why the king asked her to follow him.

Bareea stepped into the room and gently closed the door behind her.

Axilla, who was among the maids that were dismissed, turned her back and made her way to where Kitanna was sitting in her new maid uniform.

"Princess Kitanna, I think the king had a fight with the queen. I’m not really sure, but whispers of it were passing among the other maids, and he just dismissed all the palace servants that work in his inner chamber," Axilla informed.

Kitanna pressed her lips. Khelan was someone very weak and fickle-minded. If he had a fight with Larel, he would want to vent it out. She sighed and got up from her seat. Her plan was to talk to Khelan about everything that happened and talk him out of taking away her own seal.

But with the look of things, this was not the night for that discussion.

Kitanna turned to look at Axilla.

"What about the White Lord?" She asked. After he left the room, she hadn’t seen him.

"He’s not back in his room yet," Axilla responded.

Kitanna tilted her head. Where would he go to immediately after waking up? She couldn’t think of anywhere, but Nix had asked her to stay off the radar until her maid days were over. She wanted to do something to help too.

"Go to Queen Larel’s room and keep her company. She will be needing all the comfort for tonight, but remember, don’t mention the White Lord’s recovery. We don’t know his plans yet. I will go back and wait for him," Kitanna said to Axilla.

"Okay, Princess Kitanna," the young girl turned and started walking towards the queen’s chamber.

Kitanna stood there, her eyes trailing to Khelan’s room. He was about to make a mistake, and she would allow him. If she needed to get her position back, she needed to have leverage over Khelan. The only person Kitanna felt sorry for was Larel, the heartbreak she might face, but Khelan was just too weak to carry the crown.

Kitanna turned and left the passage, her maid’s uniform feeling a little itchy on her collar.
