Chapter 47: EVIL BLOOD
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: THE DEVIL DOESN’T BARGAIN ~ ALEC BENJAMIN]
Almaria stood at the palace entrance, waiting for her cousin. The weather was dark and gloomy, with the heavy breeze blowing the trees in the palace back and forth.
Almaria’s garment was not spared by the heavy wind, but she didn’t make an attempt to go back inside the palace.
The head maid, Lady Aggie, walked to stand beside the queen dowager with her head still bowed.
"Queen dowager, the weather is too harsh for you. Please step inside, and I will escort your guest once she arrives," Aggie said politely.
Almaria ignored the words that were directed to her and continued to stand outside the palace, watching out for any carriage that would come by.
"My cousin is not someone I should sit back in the comfort of my room and wait for," Almaria murmured under her breath.
The next wave of breeze was so strong that it caused the queen dowager to stumble slightly. She was held back by some of the maids who had a worried look on their faces.
Immediately, the sky rumbled, causing the heavens to darken even more. Then the sounds of horse hooves stopped right in front of the palace. The carriage that stopped was a fancy-looking one.
Almaria had already sent a royal carriage and guards to pick her cousin up, but when she noticed it was the same carriage that stopped abruptly in front of the palace.
Without much waste of time, Almaria held her gown as she descended the stairs, with the hem of her dress sweeping the palace floor. Her maids, who were surprised by her actions, followed her behind.
The carriage door slowly opened, and a woman in her late sixties came into view. The woman had her grey hair wrapped round and beautifully folded in cornrows. She was looking chubby, which hid the wrinkle lines on her face.
Almaria bowed deeply at the sight of the elderly woman, and this caused all the other maids to bow too.
The woman had a condescending look on her face, her eyes trailed to look at the maids and then back to Almaria. It was as if she was displeased with everything in her sight.
She finally came down from the carriage, and as soon as she stepped down, the sky rumbled again, causing the lightning to flash on her face. It was a scary view to behold.
The woman’s eyebrows were well-arched, her lips were deeply painted with purple.
The woman, who was Almaria’s cousin, started walking inside the palace, with Almaria following her behind.
"Sister Deonisia, Welcome to Morado," Almaria said calmly, trying to walk at the same pace as her cousin. The elder woman walked with so much elegance.
"Almaria, I see you have become weak," the elderly woman finally said, looking at Almaria from the side of her eyes and still walking with an air of superiority.
Almaria shook her head, "No Sister Deonisia."
The maids gave each other a look, as they had never seen Almaria bow to anyone before, but she was literally worshipping even the ground the unknown woman stepped on.
After the entourage entered the palace, the heavens began to cry. It rained so heavily that the windows inside the palace made loud noises due to the rain crashing against them. The heavy rain made it difficult to hear anyone speak unless you were standing very close to the person.
"Get the insolent child to meet me now"
Almaria looked at her cousin with a surprised look, she just arrived and wanted to meet with Kitanna immediately. The queen dowager decided not to question her cousin. She bowed to the request.
"Before I go to my quarters, take me to Mubera. Did she not hear that I arrived?" Lady Deonisia said in a low condescending tone.
"This way, Sister Deonisia." Almaria pointed to the path that led to the shrine.
Mubera was not surprised to see them enter her shrine. She already heard of the guest who was causing the queen dowager to panic, when they got closer to her, Mubera moved forward and bowed to her guests.
"Mubera. Is it the title that caused you not to come outside and pay your respect?" Lady Deonisia asked with an aloof gaze.
"I was offering prayers for your safety. Forgive my insolence, and I am now a high priestess." Mubera chipped in with a smile on her face. She was not the young girl that they pushed around anymore. She was now a woman whose words can shake the throne.
Lady Deonisia took note of the way Mubera spoke and how she tried to point out her position for her to see, she twitched her lips.
"I see, High priestess Mubera. I came to offer my greetings. I will be going to my chamber now" Lady Deonisia said before exiting the shrine.
Almaria trotted behind her, trying to do everything to please the woman. Because the woman was easily displeased.
Mubera stood still as she watched them leave the shrine. What was Almaria thinking that she invited trouble? Deonisia was a predator who eats not just her prey but the prey’s very soul.
If Almaria was the devil’s advocate then Deonisia was the devil.
Mubera shook her head at the thoughts of the evil that was about to be unleashed. Fear streaked down her back.
Inside the room, cleaned and decorated specially for the queen dowager’s guest, Lady Deonisia sat in a position with her knees touching her chin. Her eyes looked at everything in the room with displeasure.
"Is it not to your taste? I will get them changed right away," Almaria said, noticing the look on her cousin’s face.
"It’s a bad smell I’m getting. The rotten stench smell of weakness," Lady Deonisia trailed eyes to look at Almaria.
"And it comes from you" her strict voice said unapologetically.
Almaria held her gown tightly, she did not want to be seen as weak either.
In the quietness of the room, the head maid announced the arrival of the princess.
"She’s here," Almaria announced again for her cousin to give her a stern look. She pressed her lips.
Kitanna walked inside the room, surprised to hear that the queen dowager’s cousin wanted to see her before dinner.
"Welcome, My Lady," Kitanna bowed when she entered the room, and she noticed how the elderly woman was sitting. She overlooked it and went to sit.
"Sister Deonisia, this is princess Kitanna. My first and only daughter. She survived an attack on her life, not quite long" Almaria smiled, her eyes moving from Kitanna to her cousin.
"Mother, I don’t think your sister needs an introduction from you. I was going to tell her before she tags me as an audacious child. Mother, you pet me too much," Kitanna grinned, her eyes still on her mother’s cousin.
Lady Deonisia’s lips tugged at the end, and she did not say anything in response. She continued to look at Kitanna.
"Almaria, she is right. I don’t need an introduction, she carries her mother’s fighting spirit." Deonisia finally said.
This caused Almaria to look at her cousin with a shocked expression, before she finally schooled her expression.
Kitanna noticed this, but she decided to let it go because it was obvious the two women wanted her to destroy her very existence, so everything they were going to do or they were doing was to play with her mind.
"Do you not remember me? I carried you when you were still a suckling," the elderly woman said to Kitanna.
"I barely have memories from my childhood, and especially after the incident that happened, I lost most of my memories," Kitanna said with a sad smile.
"Do you now?...You have me now to help you remember," Lady Deonisia reassured Kitanna.
When Kitanna finally left the room, Lady Deonisia dropped the leg that was close to her face. She turned to look at Almaria.
"You dimwit. She never lost any memory after the incident. But as for her childhood, it is really true she does not remember, I just confirmed it."
