Chapter 39: PRINCESS TAMER
Chapter 39: PRINCESS TAMER
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: VIOLET ~ KIM KYUNG HEE]
Kitanna walked behind Nix; she had no idea where he was taking her, but she found herself following him.
Was he going to bring up the talk about boundaries again? Or was he going to scold her for acting out the night before? Kitanna rubbed her sweaty palm on her dress as she thought deeply about what Nix was going to do.
Nix was not someone that could be easily read or predicted. He barely spoke, except when necessary, and his highest word count was when talking with Kitanna. He did not like to involve himself in long conversations; everything bored him, except his space and the princess.
Nix continued to walk out of the main palace until he got to his own quarters, which was isolated from the main palace. He let his door open, causing a creaky sound, then he stood to the side. "After you, Princess," his blue eyes gazed at Kitanna.
Kitanna was surprised when she realized they had just walked to his own quarters. She gulped nervously, then she turned to look around to see if anyone was watching.
It would be abnormal for the princess to walk into a guard’s home. Also, all the stories she had heard about Nix, how he changed women like they were clothes, made Kitanna reluctant to give anyone a reason to gossip about her.
She did not want such gossip to pass around about her, it will only give the queen dowager a reason to bring her down the moment she finds out that she was beginning to have a weakness.
"Get in," Kitanna was startled by the velvet voice which resounded in her ear and caused the hairs on her neck to stand. Without thinking further, she stepped into the room.
Nix followed her behind as he closed the door, and Kitanna’s heart skipped with the sound of the door.
She trailed her eyes to look at the bedroom. Kitanna remembered what had happened inside there before she came back to the palace. The thought of it made her cheeks flush. She continued to stand in an awkward posture.
"Sit," Nix commanded again, pointing to where she should sit.
Kitanna bowed and started walking towards the chair when she stopped. "Hold on! I am the princess, you are the guard. Why do I feel like our roles are being switched?" she asked with her brows furrowed.
"Then stand," Nix went to sit down comfortably, his face still holding the bored and aloof expression.
Kitanna bit her lower lip and frowned, then she threw away her pride and sat down. Seconds passed, and the room was quiet.
Kitanna tried to keep her focus on her hands, but she failed every time because her eyes went to stare at Nix. And every time she did look at him, he was also looking at her.
When she couldn’t take it anymore, she stood up and started walking around the room until she stood in front of the candle stand. With her back facing Nix, she opened her mouth to speak.
"I am sorry about last night; I was drunk."
Kitanna waited for Nix to talk, but he was not saying anything. She turned to see if he was actually listening.
The princess let out a small gasp when she turned to see Nix standing right in front of her. She looked at the position he was sitting before, and there was no way she wouldn’t have heard him move. But then she didn’t hear a sound and here he was standing in front of her.
"You were saying?" Nix asked. He knew very well the effect his presence had on the girl, but he just wanted to confirm and also prove to her that it was not because she was drunk.
"I- am sorry about last night," Kitanna stuttered. The closeness was making a mess of her body. She couldn’t keep her thoughts straight, and his intense gaze was making her legs weak.
"Tell me, Princess, what happened last night?" This time, Nix walked closer to her, causing Kitanna to take a step back until her back hit the wall. He moved his hand and rested it on her face, then he used his large palm to hold up Kitanna’s chin so she could look straight into his eyes.
Kitanna squeezed her hands at her side. She continued to beg the heavens to help her; the rate at which her heart was beating was no longer normal.
"Y- you are too close," she mumbled.
"Is that a problem?" His voice sounded hoarse as he whispered the words very close to Kitanna’s ear.
Kitanna closed her eyes when she felt his lips touch her earlobe, her whole body hummed in response. She felt a knot tie in her stomach, so she brought her legs together and squeezed them.
"P... please don’t....stop..." Kitanna’s voice came out as a whisper, but Nix heard her.
"Don’t or stop," Nix moved back to look at the girl he had turned helpless. "You should make up your mind, Princess," he finally let her go and started walking back to his seat.
Kitanna slouched when she felt him let go of her; she tried to get her whole body in order. She exhaled quietly.
"You are the cause of all this! You make me feel emotions that are strange. I have never had a reason to be weak in front of anyone until you touched me. I don’t like that I behave this way either, and I don’t even know when it started. It makes me feel so small and...weak." Kitanna found herself venting, spilling all the emotions she had bottled up. She finished talking, but Nix did not respond; he just continued to sit like the conversation was not for him to participate in.
"And I hate that I don’t know what is going on in your mind. That is what drives me crazy the more. You always talk like you own the world; you never make any expression for me to understand you better... and... and your voice is..." Kitanna stopped talking when she saw Nix stand up.
"Kitanna, come here," Nix raised his hand in a come hither form.
Kitanna bit her lip; he called her name again. She gulped softly and started walking to where he stood.
"Don’t go about saying I touched you; don’t use words you know nothing about. Understood?" Kitanna nodded in reply.
Nix exhaled like talking was too much of a task for him.
"Don’t ever take alcohol if I’m not there, and don’t go anywhere alone." That was all he said next.
Kitanna blinked; was this his reply to her confession? Who is this man? She dragged her hair mentally as she screamed inside of her.
"Now, walk." Kitanna felt a jolt on her skin when she heard the command, and she started walking out of the room. She was almost at the door when she felt Nix’s hand gently hold her neck.
"Stop losing focus. Yeah?" Nix asked.
"Yes," Kitanna replied, and then he moved his hand down before he did. Nix rubbed her skin lightly, feeling the delicate texture of her slender neck.
Kitanna walked out of the place, leaving Nix all alone in the room.
Nix cursed under his breath as he stood in a place, looking at the hand he held Kitanna’s neck with. He was hoping the emotions would be fleeting, but now they were both trapped.
When he realized he was also getting attracted to the princess, Nix decided to create a boundary between them. But it didn’t work because the girl had already started brewing feelings.
It was unlawful for a princess and a guard to be seen together, and also Kitanna was someone who had a lot of battles to fight; falling in love should not be on her list. It will only make her weak.
Nix gritted his teeth and cursed once more before he walked out of the room.
