Chapter 273: FINAL BONUS Chapter II
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: BEETHOVEN - MOONLIGHT SONATA ~ FULL BY KASSIA]
After a few weeks of Axilla and Cortez’s wedding, Venantius let Cortez stay back in the merchant village with the hope he would be coming to visit Badukeh regularly.
The newlywed couple had enjoyed their wedding alone and received blessings and gifts from their loved ones. Cortez made Axilla in charge of the inn while he handled the outside trade.
"Lady Axilla, what should I do about the goods that just arrived?" one of the merchants asked, with his head bowed.
Axilla scanned through the ledger, "Make sure none of them are sold until my husband returns," she replied, prompting the assistant to bow and leave the place.
Kayla walked inside the storeroom, "Lady Axilla, someone is here to see you," she announced.
Axilla dropped what she was doing and followed Kayla to the room where her guest was waiting.
"Lady Jenna!" Axilla said with a big smile.
Lady Jenna stood up, and with a bow, she greeted, "Lady Axilla...."
"Guzman," Axilla completed. "We decided to go with the last name Guzman as our own," she said.
Lady Jenna nodded, "Lady Axilla Guzman, the wife of Chief Cortez Guzman. Accept my greetings," the young woman bowed.
Axilla smiled, "You don’t need the formalities, please have a seat. What would you like to drink?" she asked, waving for a servant to come.
Lady Jenna pushed down her shawl, "Anything the lady of the house offers to me I’ll really love it. I came with wedding gifts for you," the woman said, pushing a box forward.
"That’s so thoughtful, thank you so much." Axilla took the box with a grateful smile. It was a music box of love, a rare gift to come by.
Lady Jenna relaxed on the couch, "I wasn’t able to see you and talk to you after the incident at the house. Who could have known that your mother is the famous Lady Hash, queen of the trade business."
Axilla smiled, "Who could have known..." her voice trailed off. "Life can be unpredictable like that. How about you? I heard from Cortez that you’re pushing to annul your marriage."
Lady Jenna nodded with a sigh, "It took me some time to finally agree, but I’m the only person who can save myself," the woman replied.
Axilla nodded, "That’s great, what do you plan on doing now?" Despite being a great step to leave her abusive marriage, it was something rare in their society.
A woman who leaves her marriage is stigmatized and not allowed to enjoy some certain privileges. It was going to be a difficult path for Lady Jenna, but it was the best path for her.
Lady Jenna hummed, "I haven’t given it a thought yet, but I’m sure if I go with the flow, I’ll find something that would interest me eventually. Maybe opening a store where I sell my fresh juice."
"That’s a great idea, let me know if there’s any way I can help." Axilla added, happy for the new development.
While they were talking, Lady Hash entered the room.
Lady Jenna got to her feet and bowed, "Lady Hash, it’s nice to see you. The last time we didn’t get to greet properly."
Lady Hash waved her with a smile, "It’s okay, I was just worried about my daughter that day. I remember you, Jenna dear." The older woman said, going to sit beside her daughter.
Lady Jenna smiled, "It’s so good to see both mother and daughter," the woman remarked. "I should get going now; I came by to greet Lady Axilla."
"Please come by often to visit us," Axilla said, as they walked to the door.
Outside the inn stood Lady Marianne, who had come to carry her goods but was asked to meet with the Lady of the house first.
"I can’t do that, don’t you know my father?" The woman said, causing a ruckus outside the inn.
Axilla walked closer to the place and asked, "What is going on here?" She asked.
"Lady Marianne here wants to purchase goods without meeting with you first. And I’m telling her it’s not possible," the assistant merchant informed.
Lady Hash was the one to step in, "I’ve heard the name from Kayla, Marianne, the one who asked about my daughter’s origin?" She asked, looking at the young lady.
Marianne pointed at Lady Hash and then Axilla, "D-daughter?" She asked surprised.
Lady Hash nodded, "Now I want to know everything you said to my daughter. I have time today, and I’m listening," the woman folded her hands on her chest, looking at the young lady sternly.
The young lady took a step back, "I’m sorry, Lady Hash, I didn’t know she was your daughter...I thought..."
"You thought what? So if she wasn’t my daughter, you would have still insulted her. Who is this lady? Get me every information about her and make sure her family doesn’t receive goods from us or anyone connected to us," Lady Hash ordered.
Axilla smiled, "Mama, it’s okay, that’s too much. Let her be," the girl held her mother’s hand gently.
Lady Hash shook her head, "I need to teach her a lesson so that others wouldn’t dare to speak ill about my daughter next time. I think the punishment is not even enough for what Kayla told me she did to you."
Lady Jenna, who was watching mother and daughter, smiled, "The love and protection of a mother can never be overemphasized," she muttered.
The young Lady Marianne ran out of the inn shamefully without looking back.
Lady Hash turned to Axilla, "Where is Cortez? I told you both never to leave each other’s side. I want to carry my grandchildren as soon as possible."
Axilla locked her arm with her mother’s own, as they turned to walk back inside the house. She said with a smile, "Your grandchildren will come, don’t wor-" Axilla wasn’t able to complete her words when she felt sick in her stomach.
"What is the problem?" Lady Hash asked worriedly.
Axilla sighed, "I don’t know; I’ve been feeling a little sick these days, especially in the morning. Do you think I need to change my eating habits?"
Lady Hash turned to look at her daughter’s face, then a smile spread on her lips. "You don’t need to change anything; you’re perfectly healthy. My grandchild only heard this old woman’s cry," the woman said happily.
Axilla frowned, "What are you saying," then her eyes widened in realization. "You mean I’m?" She asked.
Lady Hash nodded excitedly, "Come inside quick; you need to lie down and rest. Tell me everything you want to eat," the older woman said, dragging her shocked daughter inside the house.
