Chapter 260: EVEN IF THE WORLD GOES TO PIECES
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: ON MY MAMA ~ VICTORIA MONÉT]
Inside the room where Axilla was lying unconscious, Lady Hash sat just close to the girl, holding her hand. When the door to the room opened, the woman raised her face.
"Who is there?" She asked, holding Axilla’s hand tightly, afraid of being separated from the girl.
Dominique walked towards the girl with the small vial he was holding, which had the antidote, but Cortez stopped him.
"Give that to me; I’ll take it from here," he said.
The king’s aide bowed. "Yes, your highness. She should take every drop in the vial," Dominique replied, before leaving the room.
"Cortez, is that you?" Lady Hash asked, waiting for a reply.
Cortez walked to where the woman was sitting. "Lady Hash, you don’t look good yourself. Go get some rest; I’ll watch over her now," he suggested with a calm voice.
Lady Hash nodded; the two young ones needed to have their time alone. Without saying anything, the woman picked up her walking stick and made her way out of the room.
Cortez sat on the empty stool close to Axilla, touching the girl’s face gently, he tucked the hair on her face behind her ear.
"I’m sorry for coming late.." Cortez said in a softly, as if the girl could hear him. Uncorking the vial, he pressed it close to Axilla’s lips, making sure every drop slipped into her mouth. When he was done, he wiped the girl’s mouth with a clean handkerchief.
It took a few minutes before the antidote took effect in Axilla’s body. Her finger was the first to move, then her eyes, which she blinked once before she finally opened them.
"Cortez.." Axilla muttered, her voice weak and frail.
Cortez helped the girl sit up, dabbing her forehead with a clean towel he found close to the bed. "It’s me, Love. How do you feel?" He asked, touching the girl’s face with so much emotion running through him. It was as if all his worries melted away the moment he saw those hazel eyes of Axilla. He didn’t remember the bargain he had made with Venantius, to stay back.
"Am I dreaming?" Axilla asked, reaching her hand to touch Cortez’s face. It felt warm and alive.
Cortez smiled, "You’re not dreaming; I’m here," he replied, looking deep into the girl’s eyes.
"Oh! Cortez," she threw herself into his arms, hugging him tightly. It felt like years since she had seen him.
Cortez held the girl tightly, petting her back gently as she buried her face in his shoulder. "It’s okay now; we are going to be fine," he muttered, but he didn’t know how it was going to work, but he believed everything would be just fine.
Axilla finally pulled away from the hug, touching Cortez’s face she said, "What happened? How are you here? Did he let us go free?" The girl asked worriedly.
Cortez shrugged his shoulders, "Let’s just say everything is sorted out. Nobody would stop you from leaving here now; you can move freely," he said to the girl with a smile.
Axilla found this reply to be suspicious; she had seen the man; he wasn’t someone to give in that easily. If he was letting her go free, it only meant he was taking something in return. Before she could ask, Cortez said.
"Lady Hash was here with you when I came; it appears she didn’t leave your side. Do you want to go see her?" Cortez informed.
Axilla remembered what she had forgotten for a moment. "Cortez, do you hate her? For what she did to your mother?" She asked.
Cortez touched Axilla’s delicate hands, "Why? Do you want to apologize on her behalf?" He chuckled before saying, "I don’t blame her for not helping my mother and me in that situation; she did what any human would. Our first instinct is survival. But I am angry at her for just one reason,"
Axilla furrowed her brow; if Cortez wasn’t angry with Lady Hash for not helping his mother out, then what other reason could top that. "What is that?" She asked.
"For leaving my woman behind. I won’t tolerate that," Cortez said, touching Axilla’s face.
Axilla might have fallen for him twice in the past; right now, she had lost count. The emotions that swirled in her were just too much; the way Cortez was intentional with his love for her was evident. He always made her his priority even with his words and actions.
Axilla had been worried that there would be bad blood between Cortez and Lady Hash because of their uncanny past where Cortez lost his mother who could have been saved by Lady Hash. But here he was worried about how she was abandoned.
Axilla stifled the tears that were forming in her eyes; looking away, she said, "Don’t always be worried about me. Also, think of yourself." She said, biting her lips.
Cortez tilted his head, "Why? Did I melt your heart?" He teased her, "You’re like a part of me now; I’ll always worry about you first." He remarked watching the girl try to hide her tears.
Axilla gripped her gown tightly, turning to Cortez she leaned forward and pressed her lips on his own. When she moved back, she muttered, "Thank you so much."
"Anything for my bright flower," Cortez replied, watching as the girl’s cheeks flushed. He smiled, knowing she still had the innocence in her despite everything she had been through.
"What are you going to do now?" Axilla asked after a moment of silence.
Cortez hummed, "You mean about the man?" Axilla nodded in reply, "I’m just going to let him have fun. What about you? Have you spoken with Lady Hash?"
Axilla shook her head, "I didn’t know what to say to her; I believe I might have said hurtful words I didn’t mean to her. But I was angry; all this time, I felt out of place because I didn’t have a last name, only to find out I was abandoned. Why would she do that?" The girl asked with a sad voice.
Cortez rubbed the girl’s lips gently, "What did I tell you about pain? If it hurts, then it hurts; there’s nothing you can do about it. The words you told her were necessary; I guess I don’t need to say much again." He paused, "As to why she abandoned you, I can’t answer that for her. But I want to let you know that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with you." He completed.
"Thank you again, for making me feel good," Axilla said, tucking her hair behind her ear, she said, "Actually, I’m excited to have my own mother, and the person being Lady Hash, it feels like a blessing, but I don’t know how to tell her." The girl said with a small smile; she always prayed to have a mother like Lady Hash, and it actually came to pass. She couldn’t ask for more.
"I’m glad that’s how you feel; I’ll ask the maids to come draw your bath, and if the room isn’t to your taste, I’ll change it." When Cortez got to his feet, Axilla held his shirt.
The girl raised her face gently, which was painted with blush, "I want to sleep in your room tonight..." Her voice faded out.
