Chapter 254: UNEXPECTED TURN OF EVENTS
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: ONE OF THESE NIGHTS ~ RED VELVET]
Back at the palace in Morado, inside the chamber meant for the royal family, Kitanna rested her head on Nix’s chest, listening to his steady heartbeat as he rubbed her back gently, trying to soothe her to sleep.
"Are you asleep?" Nix asked, touching her hair gently.
Kitanna raised her face from his chest, looking at him. "No, I can’t seem to find sleep. What about you?" she asked, reaching for her husband’s face as she caressed it gently.
Nix hummed. "Me too," he exhaled softly.
Kitanna nodded; she knew that with everything going on, Nix would find it difficult to sleep. He had been waiting for the day he would get his hands on the man who killed his father, to pay back with blood. But it just looked like it wasn’t worth it anymore.
"Nix, just know that any decision you make, I would stand by you," Kitanna muttered, reaching to hold Nix’s hand.
Nix closed his eyes for a moment. "Of all persons, why is he Cortez’s father? He could have been someone else so killing him would be much easier," he remarked.
Kitanna moved up from the bed, relaxing her back on the pillow. She said, "Did Cortez now accept him? Or sound like he is willing to accept him?"
Nix shook his head. "Obviously, he sounded very angry at the man, which is understandable. But in the end, they are related by blood. He told me to get my revenge after he helps Axilla escape from there."
Kitanna sighed. "Everything just looks surreal. Lady Hash is Axilla’s mother? Who knows how the girl would take it. The both of them in one place, I hope they’re okay," the young queen muttered under her breath. She had never imagined that Lady Hash would be Axilla’s mother, none of them did.
"She must be feeling betrayed, Axilla I mean. Just like Hieron, Lady Hash has a lot of persons to apologize to. She knew all along that the man I was looking for was Cortez’s father yet she remained quiet about it," Nix said in a calm steady voice. Sitting up, he rubbed Kitanna’s stomach, which was getting bigger by the day.
Kitanna nodded. "I hope everything gets sorted out. I don’t want our child to come out when there is still chaos. What do you plan on doing after Axilla is rescued from the palace?" she asked her husband.
Nix hummed. "Like you said, I want our child to only grow up with love and nothing else. I don’t want to train the child, afraid of him being killed by an enemy with an old grudge."
"You’re right, like I said, any decision you make, I would agree and support you," Kitanna replied.
Nix smiled, leaning closer to peck her lips. "Thank you. Now let’s get some sleep. Tomorrow we are making plans on how to get Axilla out from there."
"Mm," Kitanna laid back on the bed, snuggling close to Nix’s chest before sleep took over her.
.....
Meanwhile at the royal palace in Badukeh,There was a few minutes of silence between Axilla and Lady Hash as both of them tried to compose themselves.
Finally, Lady Hash cleared her throat. "You need to leave this place. I’ll find a way to get you out," the woman remarked.
"Do you have a plan?" Axilla asked, gripping her gown tightly. She noticed a hair that fell on Lady Hash’s face, and she wanted to tuck it in, but then she stopped herself, looking away from the woman.
Lady Hash nodded. "Yes, I’ve been here in the past. Venantius is a carefree man; I’m sure he hasn’t changed the settings of this place. I know a path you can follow that will lead you outside the palace," the woman informed with a low voice.
Axilla pressed her lips. "Do you think Cortez would ever accept him as his father?" she asked worriedly. Despite wanting to escape, Axilla wished Cortez would have a little closure with the man.
Lady Hash scratched the bridge of her nose slightly. "I wouldn’t know. You’re in a better position to answer that," the woman said, referring to their strained relationship and if Axilla would ever break her resolve and find it in her to forgive her past actions.
Axilla twitched her lips. "I guess some sins are just unforgivable. I’m going to bed. What time are we leaving the palace?" she asked.
Lady Hash gulped, weighing the words Axilla said. It meant she didn’t have a chance in gaining the girl’s forgiveness, but that was okay, as long as she was allowed to stay around her like old times. "It will be by dawn. I’ll let the girl Kayla know."
Axilla nodded her head, walking towards the door she turned to the woman. "Do you need help retiring to your room?" she asked with an indifferent tone.
Lady Hash smiled subtly; the girl still cared for her, and it was more than she could ask for. "No, I’m fine. I can call Kayla. Let me not bother you. Go ahead," she waved to her.
Axilla stared at the woman for some seconds before leaving for her room.
Dawn finally arrived; Axilla was woken up by the gentle knocks of Kayla who escorted her to the path Lady Hash mentioned. Getting to the place, Axilla saw no sign of Lady Hash. She furrowed her brow.
"What about Lady Hash?" The girl turned to ask.
Kayla replied with a sad voice, "She asked me to tell you that you should leave without her. Someone has to stay back and stall time," Kayla informed.
Axilla’s eyebrows knitted in worry; if the man should find out that they had escaped, he would do something serious, worst case harm Lady Hash.
"Ax- Lady Axilla, we should leave now before they notice your absence," Kayla pressured, looking behind to be sure nobody was following them behind.
Axilla tapped her feet nervously on the ground, looking the way that led to freedom, then back at the palace. She made a step forward but stopped in her tracks. Then she sighed tiredly.
"This won’t do." Saying this, Axilla ran back to the main palace.
Kayla was surprised to see the girl running back to where they were trying to escape from. "Ax- Lady Axilla " the girl corrected herself, chasing after the young woman.
Axilla ran as fast as her legs could carry her, with her gown making ruffling sounds as the hem swept the marble floor. Reaching to the main palace, she turned to Kayla.
"Point me to her room; we would get Lady Hash then leave together."
Kayla was about to say something when someone interrupted.
"That wouldn’t be necessary. Welcome back from your little voyage, daughter-in-law," Venantius walked out of one of the rooms, holding Lady Hash on the shoulder.
Lady Hash, who heard Axilla’s voice, frowned her face. She was sure the girl had already escaped by now. "Axilla, what are you doing?" the woman asked worriedly.
Venantius smirked. "Look at that, I wish to have this blissful reunion with my son when he returns." The man paused, looking at the young woman he continued, "Your escape plan was going to work but then a little bird told me that your mother has been putting ideas in your head," Venantius revealed in a guard tone, while looking at Axilla with mirth dancing in his eyes.
Axilla furrowed her brows; exactly, someone must have told the man about their plan of escape. He wouldn’t know just like that because it was still early morning. Who could it be? Axilla asked herself internally.
"I’m sorry, Lady Hash. I’m sorry, Lady Axilla," Kayla muttered, bowing to the two women.
Venantius grinned. "This little bird here couldn’t betray her king. Did she not tell you that she is from my kingdom?" the man asked to the two women’s utmost surprise.
Axilla turned to look at Kayla, the girl who had been with her all this while. "Kayla, you? But why...." Her voice trailed.
