Chapter 252: DAY OF RECKONING

[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: PRETTY LITTLE DEVIL ~ SHAYA ZAMORA]

Axilla, who had finished listening to Venantius, lay down on the bed, her eyes staring blankly at the ceiling. It was hard to put two and two together, like how Lady Hash was her birth mother, and how she didn’t realize it all this time. And most importantly, why the woman had abandoned her.

The girl tossed herself on the bed. At this point, she wanted to be with Cortez. She wanted to tell him everything she had found out and let him comfort her and also advise her on what to do.

"Cortez, I hope you’re okay," Axilla muttered to herself, tears flowing down her eyes.

Venantius sat inside his own room, his hand twirling the glass cup in front of him. The reaction he expected from the girl was now what he got, and it got him wondering what was running through the girl’s mind.

"So unpredictable, just like her mother," the Supreme King muttered under his breath. The door to his room opened, and his aide stepped inside.

Dominique bowed deeply, "Greetings, Supreme King. Lady Hash is outside the palace," the man reported.

Venantius clapped his hands, his face lighting up at the mention of the woman’s name. "Did she come alone?" He asked.

Dominique, who knew exactly who the man was talking about, shook his head, "His Highness is not here with her. Lady Hash came alone," the aide replied with his head bowed.

Venantius hummed, "That’s fine, he can take his time. I get it that he is still shy. Make sure Hash is comfortable; I’ll come to see her soon. Didn’t know she missed me so much."

Dominique bowed and stepped out to escort the woman inside.

Lady Hash stood outside the palace, her weight balanced with her walking stick. She looked at the young girl who had escorted her.

"Once we settle in, I want you to find out the room Axilla is held in. Okay?"

Kayla nodded her head. When she heard that Axilla had been abducted and that Lady Hash was the girl’s real mother, it was just too much to handle. But at the same time, she wanted to help her friend out.

Lady Hash lifted her chin, her face bearing a look of confidence. "This is the only way to end this," the woman sighed. When the door opened, she was led inside one of the rooms.

After a few minutes had passed, Venantius walked inside the room with a wide smile on his lips. "Welcome back, should I say home? Because it feels like home, doesn’t it, Hash? Are you getting the feeling? Nostalgia, they call it," the man smiled, going to get comfortable on one of the empty couches.

Lady Hash didn’t say anything, her expression blank.

"You look prettier than the last time I saw you. What would you like to drink? Make yourself comfortable," Venantius said, crossing one of his legs over the other.

Lady Hash said in a calm voice, "Cut to the chase, Venantius. I know it’s me you want. I’m here now; release the girl," the woman remarked curtly.

Venantius chuckled, tapping his finger on his lips. "Hmm... Hash, you must have guessed it right. Yes, I had a soft spot for you, but it was all in the past. This time, you’re not the one I want. You’re just going to help me get what I want."

Lady Hash furrowed her brow, "What do you want, then? And what has the girl got to do with it?"

Venantius threw his head back, laughing at the woman mockingly, "Are you trying to play the role of a mother, which you failed to fulfill all these years? Hash, bear with it; you and I are just the same. I would have punished you for meddling in my family business, but fate is already doing that for me," the man stated. Looking at the woman’s expression, he continued.

"You lost everything, Hash. You tried to pay for your sins by taking care of my child when you abandoned yours. I think your life is messier, and your daughter would agree with me," the man taunted Lady Hash with his words.

Lady Hash clenched her fist on her side, "I didn’t deny my sins or try to meddle in her life. Unlike you. Why are you doing all this?"

"Unlike me? That’s where I’m better than you. I’m trying to make up for the times I wasn’t there. And why I’m doing all this? Why would a father ask for his son? You should know the answer already," Venantius replied, holding his head up with one hand.

Lady Hash nodded, "You haven’t changed one bit. You think all your crimes would be erased just because you want to suddenly take up the father role? You killed his mother!"

"It wouldn’t be erased, but I would still try. And who are you to judge me, Hash? We are both alike; you watched me kill his mother. Ha! Did you forget? And you went further to abandon your daughter, his love interest. We both should work together to gain their forgiveness, don’t you think?" Venantius asked casually.

Lady Hash rubbed her temples, "I’m not like you, Venantius. I would never be like you. I acknowledge my sins, but I won’t force Cortez to accept you. Let Axilla go right now."

"Why would I do that when she would bring Cortez right to my doorstep? Don’t worry; she would get the best treatment ever, the treatment her mother had denied her all these years, giving it to another woman’s son," Venantius chuckled.

Lady Hash threw her walking stick towards the direction of the man’s voice and he dodged it, "If anything should happen to Axilla, Cortez would never forgive you. Let her go now."

"Still feisty! Hash, relax. Why would I harm my shield? That girl wouldn’t just bring Cortez to me; she would reduce the impact of the looming war. Don’t you get it, Hash?" The man paused, going to pick up the woman’s walking stick.

"You think I’m just being evil? Now let me explain it to you. With Axilla here, the White Lord, whom I killed his father, wouldn’t come to attack my kingdom directly. Why? Axilla is like family to them; she was trained in Wahels. Not only that, Cortez wouldn’t want the girl to stay here all alone. He will come looking for her. With that, I have saved us all from bloodshed. I have my heir reigning beside me, and he stays with his woman. They both live happily ever after," Venantius stated his plan.

Lady Hash sneered, "That is it? You’re hiding from your punishment. For how long? You killed a Nix’s father, and it is only right you get killed yourself," the woman retorted.

"We will see about that. Make yourself comfortable. We are going to be in-laws soon, as sad as it is for you. You have to bear with the fact that my blood would run in your daughter’s gene. Cortez is really my son; he knows how to pick women, just like his father. Even though you never gave me a chance, being my in-law is not so bad either," Venantius dropped the walking stick close to Lady Hash. He smiled, leaving the woman all alone in the room.
