Chapter 229: THOSE LEFT BEHIND
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: GOODBYE MY LOVE ~ AILEE]
The next morning was bright and sunny, with a gentle breeze that ruffled the dried fallen leaves as small birds chirped, hopping from one tree to another.
Kitanna sat inside a warm bath while Nix massaged her delicate shoulders gently. The feeling made the queen relax as she closed her eyes and pulled her head back, resting it on Nix’s chest.
"Deonisia lied again. We went to the place she described, but it doesn’t exist. The place has been in ruins for a decade now," Nix informed his wife, adding extra oil to his palm before placing it on Kitanna’s shoulder to soothe her muscles.
Kitanna slowly opened her eyes. "I knew she wasn’t going to spill it that easily. Nix, what do you say we hand her over to court officials for judgment? We will find that kingdom ourselves," the young queen suggested to her husband. So many moons had passed, yet Deonisia wouldn’t release the name of the kingdom that attacked Nix’s father and killed him shamefully. Kitanna knew it was going to be a tough choice for Nix to forget about revenge, but she wished he would, for the sake of their unborn child. Kitanna wanted the bad blood between them and other kingdoms to end. Though she knew it was inevitable to have fallout once in a while with other kingdoms, she didn’t want to carry on with the generational revenge. It was long overdue.
Nix paused, then said, "I was planning on doing that. Let’s get you dressed for breakfast," as he carried Kitanna up and dried her body with a clean towel.
Kitanna finally got dressed and sat in front of the vanity mirror with a brush in her hand. Ever since she got pregnant, she didn’t like being attended to by maids; she preferred to show herself only to Nix, and that was who she felt comfortable with.
"Let me help you with that," Nix said after fixing the button on his sleeves. He picked up the comb and gently brushed down Kitanna’s black hair.
Kitanna watched her husband’s reflection in the mirror. He looked so adorable; he was able to handle the kingdom’s affairs and still keep his home. To Kitanna, Nix was the most reliable person. If seen from afar, one would think he was just a cold person who didn’t care about people, with his aloof expression and constant bored look. But Kitanna knew better than everyone that Nix was very soft when it came to her. She basked in the warm feeling of her hair being brushed gently as Nix’s fingers touched her scalp at interval.
"Nix, yesterday Axilla and Cortez arrived. They will be joining us for breakfast," Kitanna had forgotten to tell Nix about it because at the time she was supposed to go out with Lady Hash to the market, she had started feeling drowsy and tired. So she slept throughout and didn’t see Nix when he returned until the morning.
Nix nodded his head. "I got the report from one of the guards. All done," he said, touching Kitanna’s hair gently.
"And, I love it," Kitanna gave him a sweet smile. Soon the King and Queen of Morado stepped out of their room and made their way to the dining table, holding each other very closely.
Larel, who was already at the table feeding Labre, stood up, bowed, and greeted the royal couple. Nix nodded in acknowledgment of the greeting.
Soon the table was filled with a variety of different dishes that were appetizing to look at. They all ate their food in silence, with the only sound coming from the spoons and plates.
After breakfast, Lady Hash was the first to break the silence as she cleared her throat, then she started by saying, "I really want to appreciate the King and Queen for taking care of me during my stay here. I’m going to leave today; I have some of my goods at the port, and I need to check them," she replied.
Everyone turned to look at Hieron, but the man appeared calm with the news, so they took it that it was okay.
"You’re always welcomed here, Lady Hash. My Queen and I can never thank you enough for saving Lord Hieron. You’re like family to us now. Let me know if you’ll need anything during your journey," Nix said to the woman.
Lady Hash bowed to the King, and with a smile, she said, "I’ll always visit the palace when I come to Morado for business."
Lady Hash finally packed her things, and soon her carriage left the palace, leaving Morado as she was on her way to continue her road travels as a merchant.
Lord Hieron stood in front of the palace entrance, watched as the woman left without any explanation. After he had taken care of her the other night, she had made him swear that he wouldn’t say anything about it to others. Hieron agreed, thinking their relationship was finally making progress, but then she decided to leave.
"That’s what happens when you fall for a merchant," Nix patted his grandfather on the shoulder.
Hieron shook his head. "They are always on the road," he completed with a sad sigh. He wanted to know about the woman; from her tears the other night, she held a deep secret that was eating her up. But now she left without any information of when she would be back. Hieron sighed and walked back inside the palace.
Axilla, who was also standing outside like others to see off Lady Hash, turned to look at Cortez. She wondered when he would also leave her behind and be on the road. This thought worried her.
As if feeling her gaze, Cortez turned to meet Axilla’s hazel eyes. He gave her a small smile before going over to talk to the king.
"Your Majesty," Cortez bowed respectfully to Nix.
Nix touched his shoulder. "Cortez, heard you came back yesterday. Thank you for bringing Axilla home," he remarked.
Cortez sucked his teeth, then he grinned. "I brought her home to receive your blessing, and we might be leaving soon. My goods are left unattended," he said with a serious tone.
Nix noticed that the young man was serious with his words; he hummed. "If anyone would take care of Axilla, I guess it’s you. You have my blessings," the king stretched out his hand for Cortez to shake.
After exchanging the handshake, Cortez asked, "Do you know Axilla’s parents? She told me she doesn’t remember because she was young. But that doesn’t sound right to me; I was hoping I’d get better information from you."
Nix inhaled deeply, dipping his hand inside his trouser pocket. He turned to look at Axilla momentarily, then turned his focus on Cortez. "Let’s take a little walk," moving away from where others stood, Nix finally stopped and said, "She doesn’t remember because there was never any parent or parents."
Cortez furrowed his brows at this statement, but before he could say anything, Nix continued.
"She was found by the village chief of Wahels. Chief Maleek was his name," Nix completed.
Cortez nodded his head. "Then why was she never told that?"
Nix glanced at Axilla momentarily. "The story behind her birth is a little ominous. According to the chief who found her, she was still covered with blood and mucus and left close to the Wahel river. She was abandoned."
