Chapter 214: CARRIAGE Q&A
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: ONLY ~ KIM MARIE]
Inside the carriage, Axilla noticed how Cortez now sat away from her, as if he had not just claimed her in front of everyone. She held the jacket tightly; the lingering sensation of Cortez’s lips on her thigh still gave her a tickling feeling every time she remembered it, causing her lower stomach to knot as if little butterflies were trying to take flight inside.
Several minutes passed, and there was still silence in the carriage. Axilla tried to look at Cortez to see if he was sleeping or just wasn’t in the mood to talk to her. When she raised her face, Cortez was staring right back at her.
"...!" Axilla gasped, throwing her face to the other side.
How long had he been staring at her? She cried in her head. Why was he looking at her? Was he angry? Disappointed? Would he throw her things away once they got back home? Axilla’s mind conjured up a lot of unanswered questions as she tried to maintain her facial expression.
Cortez sighed, noticing the series of emotions that passed through the girl’s eyes. "Do you know what you did wrong?" he finally asked.
Axilla nodded her head, "My body was exposed for people to see," she said in a small voice, her eyes staring at her shoes like there was something interesting there.
"Silly girl," Cortez chuckled. "Who cares about that? Is anything wrong with your body? I think you’re beautiful, and there’s nothing to be ashamed of. My only problem is I want to be the only one who sees that. But that’s not what you did wrong," he remarked, reclining comfortably on the carriage cushion, with one of his legs crossed over the other.
Axilla furrowed her brows. If that wasn’t what she did wrong, then what was it? "I don’t know what I did wrong," she finally said..
"Thinking that I don’t trust you. Why would you explain to me that you didn’t do it? I know you, and I don’t need such explanations. If you were explaining to me, it only means you thought I was going to leave you behind," Cortez replied, looking at the girl with the way her small hands tried to cover her body properly. He smiled.
Axilla cleared her throat. She had indeed thought that Cortez would leave her behind. "I’m sorry," she said with her shoulders slouched.
Cortez moved closer, holding her shoulder up he said, "Don’t ever drop your shoulder, no matter the situation. Raise your head up high. And I really want you to trust me. If you don’t trust me, then this won’t work no matter the feelings you have for me. Now imagine if what happened today, the reverse was the case. You had seen me in Jenna’s room shirtless. Does that mean you would leave me and believe what people say?" He asked in a serious tone.
Axilla hadn’t given this scenario a thought before, but if it should happen, she didn’t know what she would actually think.
Cortez tucked the hair that was falling on Axilla’s face behind her ear. "It won’t ever happen, I know. But all I’m saying is you should trust me as much as I trust you. Let me in, and believe that I’ll always choose to side with you no matter what. Okay?" He asked, and when he received a nod from Axilla, he sat back in his normal position, closing his eyes.
Axilla watched how peaceful Cortez looked with his eyes closed. He had claimed her in front of everyone, and now he was telling her to trust him. All these actions warmed Axilla’s heart, making her heart draw closer to Cortez. It was not that she didn’t want to trust him; trust was something difficult for her, especially with the events that had been happening in her life. But if it was for Cortez, she would give it a trial because in the midst of everything, he always comes through to save her.
Axilla remembered something and decided to ask him, "Cortez," she whispered, afraid she might wake him up from his sleep.
"Hm?" Cortez answered with his eyes still closed.
"Why did you treat Lady Jenna like that? She was not the one who caused everything." Axilla asked. She noticed the tone which Cortez used on the kind lady before they left, and it made her feel bad. Lady Jenna was a good person.
Cortez exhaled softly, "It was her tea party, and she knew how important you were to me. Yet she left you all alone, unchaperoned. She is the host, so she should know the type of guests she had invited," he replied.
Axilla pressed her lips. She didn’t want Cortez and Lady Jenna to have a strained relationship because of her. "Lady Jenna... she is kind; she wouldn’t know that someone in the party would behave like that. Also, she is not happy in her marriage. I saw her husband bea-"
"Axilla," Cortez finally opened his eyes, and this caused Axilla to stop talking. Once he uses her name in such a tone, what he was about to say was very serious.
"You don’t have to call people good because they smile with you and treat you well. People change at the moments you least expect; life is not always that bright like where you come from. Around here, even mothers betray their own child, also don’t pry into other people’s private life. Okay?"
Axilla nodded, then she watched Cortez close his eyes again. So he knew about Lady Jenna’s faulty marriage. But why wouldn’t he save her? Was he perhaps still angry or wanted the woman to be punished? Axilla felt bad for Lady Jenna, but as Cortez had asked her to let it go, she decided to forget about it.
"Cortez," Axilla found herself calling his name again.
"Hm?" Cortez answered with his eyes still closed as if he was deep in thoughts.
Axilla hesitated for a moment, as if afraid of how to put the next question, then she asked, "Why do you always stay far away from me when we are alone, especially inside the carriage?" She finally asked, afraid of what his reply might be.
She waited for minutes, and Cortez didn’t say anything. When she was almost losing hope, Cortez finally opened his eyes, which now looked darker than normal.
"Axilla" he called.
"Hm?" Axilla was now the one to answer, as she blinked her eyes innocently at him.
"Because it would be hard to control myself like I’m trying so hard to do right now. Don’t tantalize me with your innocent words, seeing you cry has already messed up my mind. All clear bright flower?," Cortez asked in a low voice that was calm yet had something dangerous lurking in them, his eyes didn’t stop gazing intently at the girl.
Axilla gulped nervously, as she nodded her head, feeling the intense gaze of Cortez on her, she closed her eyes. That was the end of question and answer in the carriage, the rest of the journey was a quiet one.
