Chapter 204: AT THE BRIDGE

[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: LET’S BREAK UP ~ THE BRIDGE]

Nix was stunned to hear that the serial killer was someone presumed dead. He had already forgotten everything about Man-uel, as his own Chapter was closed after the former aide received his punishment. But the thing about evil people they never stayed dead.

Nix knew the motive behind the killings was not just to resurrect Almaria but also Man-uel trying to get his attention. Because it was him who had the former aide persecuted.

"So does that mean Man-uel is alive?" Kitanna asked, with her forehead marred in confusion. She had seen the former aide to Almaria executed that day, bringing his name up now was like saying a ghost was attacking Morado.

Nix sighed, trying to think what next Man-uel would be plotting at the moment. The man had always been quite tenacious; he wouldn’t let go once he bites his prey until he ruins something.

"The girl," Nix murmured, if there was the slightest chance that Man-uel had been hovering around him and Kitanna, then there’s also a chance that he was there at the village and might have heard the conversation he had with the little girl.

"I’m going back to the village, a little girl saw Man-uel’s face, I need to make sure she is safe." Nix informed Kitanna as he rushed out of the palace.

Getting to the village, Nix galloped his horse to the isolated part of the village where he had been earlier during the day. The woman he saw crying about her son was now sitting close to the fire outside as she got things ready for dinner.

Nix dismounted from his horse and walked straight to the woman, "Where is your daughter?" He asked because every second counts.

The woman scowled when she saw it was Nix, "Have you come to take her away how you did to my son? Leave us alone, leave the people of Morado alone. Don’t inflict us with your curse!" The woman raised her voice.

Nix ticked his jaw; now he was really getting irritated by the woman’s choice of words but that would be taken care of soon. He needed to save the girl, "Woman, sparing your life is because I assume you’re hurt by your loss. Now choose your words carefully and don’t test my patience. Where is your daughter?" Nix’s voice didn’t bear the warmth like when he had asked the first time; it had turned cold and low.

The woman gulped, holding her kitchen spoon to her chest, she pointed her house. "S-she is sleeping, inside" the woman stuttered.

Nix walked past the woman, pushing their small door open; he bent his neck as the roof was a little shorter. Inside the room was a neatly folded blanket, but there was no child resting there.

Nix stepped out of the house, walking straight to the woman. He gripped her shoulder tightly, "You call yourself a mother, but you didn’t know when your child left the house?" His voice thundered.

"S-she was there, I-" the woman stammered. The truth was she didn’t really care about what her daughter was doing; her sadness was all because her son, who was the breadwinner of the family, was no more. What use would her little daughter be to her?

Nix’s grip on the woman’s neck tightened. "If anything should happen to the girl, jubilate for you shall be joining your son." He pushed her to the side and left the house.

The moon was already overhead, as darkness enveloped the kingdom. Torches were left on the street to illuminate people’s path; the chilly wind caused the outside to look eerie.

Nix walked towards the village well; if the little girl was missing her brother, then she would go back to the well where she saw the killer.

Nix got to the well, but there was nobody there, just silence and the night birds chirping. He searched around the place, but there was no sign of the little girl or Man-uel.

"Nix! Duck!" Nix moved to the side when he heard Kitanna’s voice. He saw the knife thrown at him fly past his face and fall on the ground.

When Nix got his balance, he saw Man-uel carrying the small girl while running towards the village bridge. At the same time, Kitanna chased after the man, without wasting much time Nix joined in chasing after the man.

"You two stay back if you don’t want to see this girl dead," Man-uel finally stopped running, his whole body couldn’t bear the weight.

The wound on his back was tearing open again, and the cut that Kitanna gave to him was still very fresh. He heaved tiredly, trying to catch his breath; his hand holding the girl’s neck.

Kitanna and Nix stood not too far from the former aide, trying to contain the situation.

"Man-uel give up, it’s over. You have ended a lot of lives in your quest for something that does not exist. Almaria is gone, she is not coming back." Kitanna said in a calm voice.

A dry chuckle left Man-uel’s lips on hearing Kitanna’s words. "Such fancy words, Princess Kitanna, or is it Queen now? I always told Almaria to kill you and never trust this guard of hers but she never listened." The man said loudly, still holding the young girl captive.

The young girl scared of the situation, started crying. Her sobs annoyed her captor so much, that Man-uel pushed her close to the bridge.

"Shut up you weasel!!?" He barked at the girl.

Kitanna gasped, "Please Man-uel let the girl go, we can talk this out. What exactly do you want?" She asked trying to bargain with the man.

"What I want? We’ve never agreed on anything and then suddenly you want to give me what I want today? I fell for your tricks once won’t do it again." Man-uel remarked, his eyes shining in the dark. There was something wild in the way he spoke, like something changed in him.

"I’ll sacrifice this girl, and you and also the child in your stomach. Then Almaria would come back on the throne with me beside her aga-" Man-uel’s words of fantasy were cut short by the small laugh coming from Nix.

"You’re laughing, this situation doesn’t look serious to you. Wait until I gorge this child’s stomach," an annoyed Man-uel said angrily.

Nix slipped his hands into his pocket like the situation was not life-threatening. Then he said, "You’ve always been the master of delusions. Do you not know that you’re dying Man-uel? I feel heaven is answering my prayers; I had thought you had an easy death but then you came back now you’re decaying from the inside. A perfect death for a man like you."

"No, no I’m not dying. I’m going to resurrect Almaria and everything would return to normal." The man whimpered.

Nix scoffed, brushing off the mud that was on his shoes by stepping on it. "You are dying Man-uel. Bring back Almaria? Back to normal? Go back to being an aide. No wonder the saying, for those the gods want to drive mad, they first make them delusional."

Nix continued, getting on the last nerves of the fickle man. He knew Man-uel for a while now and he knew just how to get him angry.

"Here’s Kitanna, why don’t you stop hiding behind a little girl. Come get my wife and my child. Come on Man-uel, you can’t? I know, once a coward always a coward that’s why you went to resurrect Almaria so you can hide behind her, you can’t handle power alone can you? Almaria’s lapdog." Nix added more salt to the open wound.

"Shut it!! I’m nobody’s lapdog; I can do anything I want." Man-uel pushed the girl aside, running towards Kitanna.

Nix stepped in and grabbed the man by the neck pushing him towards the bridge. "Idiot, You should pay for your sins forever."

Man-uel struggled to catch his breath, gagging as Nix’s grip on his neck tightened; he said in a broken voice but it was heard by everyone.

"I won’t be the only one to suffer; you will be the one to kill Kitanna. It is the best punishment."

His words threw Nix off balance, Man-uel used this opportunity to push Nix and jump inside the water under; his head hit on the large stone and he stilled.

Kitanna rushed to the small girl who was now trembling, "You’re okay now." She comforted her.

Nix stood in front of the bridge, Man-uel’s words resounding in his head but he shook it away turning to Kitanna he said, "Let’s go home."
