Chapter 147: VOICE OF HOPE

"Is the princess ready?" The dull-looking woman appeared again after several minutes to ask of the princess.

Axilla nodded her head excitedly, "Yes, she is, Princess Kitanna; it’s time for breakfast."

The princess stepped out of the room divider, wearing a silk pale pink dress, embroidered on the chest was a peacock. Her hair was beautifully adorned with jewelry and hairpins of matching color. Unlike the dresses they wore back in Morado, this one was quite different, but Larel, who was acting as the princess, had to present herself elegantly.

The dull-looking maid stared at the princess for some time. Her eyes narrowed suspiciously at how she was dressed, then she shrugged her shoulders and started walking out of the room. Axilla and Larel took it as a hint to follow her behind. As they left the room, they took notice of the heavily guarded passage; the soldiers were not smiling at all.

Larel passed a look at Axilla, and she shook her head slowly, as if to tell her that even if they tried to escape, it was like a mission impossible.

Inside the dining room, the crown prince was heard discussing with someone.

"But I asked for the goods first," the crown prince said.

"Well, business is business. I don’t bypass my customers; that is what makes my trade the steadiest. Morado contacted me first," a lady’s voice was heard inside the dining.

The door opened, and both Larel and Axilla walked inside the very vast-looking room. The table was made with tough-looking wood that bent in a small curve at both edges. It makes anyone wonder how the person sitting at the end would eat.

"You would bite your words soon, trading with me would be like trading with Morado. As I will soon get married to the princess," the crown prince said as soon as the door opened, and his guests stepped in. The smile on his face fell when the princess walked in.

"I would try to make amends when you finally marry the princess," the woman replied but didn’t get any remark from the crown prince.

"Aria," the crown prince called out, and the dull-looking maid came to stand in front of him.

"Yes, your highness." The woman named Aria bowed gently.

"Why is the princess dressed like that?" He asked, looking at the mask used to cover the princess’s face except the eyes.

Axilla couldn’t stop her heart from beating; it was the only option they could use to stall time. What if the prince asked them to pull it off? Then it was over for them, and neither of them knew martial arts. Axilla rubbed her clammy hands on her skirt, praying for a savior.

"I had.." Aria was cut short.

"Your royal highness, I asked your maid not to assist me as I have my maid with me. Also in Morado, it is only right that you don’t see your bride’s face until the wedding night."

Larel lied through her mask, and she prayed it was believable enough. She tried to keep the look in her eyes confident, just the way she has seen Kitanna do often times. And she prayed this prince wouldn’t detect the difference in their eye color.

"Is that the princess of Morado? Princess Kitanna?" The woman who has been talking to the crown prince noticed the tension in the room, and she turned to look at the people that walked in even though she couldn’t see them.

Lady Hash! Axilla screamed in her mind. She recognized the woman immediately; it was the same woman they met at the merchant’s village who was blind but very much aware of her environment. Maybe their luck was starting to turn Axilla smiled.

"Yes, Lady Hash, Princess Kitanna. Come sit close to me and say your greetings to this wise woman. She is the eagle eyes when it comes to trade, metaphorically that’s it." The crown prince smiled.

"Oh Crown Prince, Lasance, you flatter me so much. The Ferrer kingdom has indeed been blessed with the connubialism between them and Morado." Lady Hash smiled, tapping her stick on the floor gently.

Axilla smiled gently, Lady Hash has just given them both the name of the kingdom and the crown prince’s name. The woman was as wise as the young master said.

Larel padded her feet to sit beside the crown prince; her whole body stiffened as the man tried to touch her back and help her seat. While Axilla folded her gown under the table so it wouldn’t fly around. Before she could stand up, she felt a hand on hers.

"Young one, why don’t you help this blind old lady. I want to answer nature’s call." Lady Hash gripped Axilla’s hand tightly.

"Don’t worry, that one is also a guest; she came with the princess. Aria, come and escort Lady Hash." Crown prince Lasance interjected, waving for the maid to step in.

"Don’t worry yourself; I’m sure she would find her way. Come, let’s go, child." Lady Hash didn’t sit around again for any discussion; she dragged Axilla out of the room, leaving behind Larel, who was on the verge of crying.

. . .

Kitanna, who was now finally awake, tried to shout, but nothing was heard, as her mouth was sealed. Her eyes tried to figure out exactly which part of the palace she was in. All she remembered was falling asleep on the couch while testing out her dress, now she was locked up in a tight room. She felt in her heart just how worried Nix would be, moving her legs she noticed how tightly it was tied together.

Kitanna scanned the whole room looking for something to cut the rope with, just anything sharp. Then her eyes caught something shining, but it was very far from her.

Meanwhile, back inside Panha’s room, Catja appeared at the door. "Lady Panha, what should I do with Lady Larel; she’s still locked up in that store your men left her in." The maid asked in a low voice.

Panha finished the last drop of tea that was in her cup. "Almaria sent a reply; she said Larel is not her problem. But then she is my problem, if she didn’t come into the picture maybe Khelan would have married my sister." She muttered the last line to herself, then she turned to look at the maid.

"Kill her and dispose of her body discreetly."

The maid was stunned for a moment; she gulped nervously when she received a glare from the lady; she bolted out of the room. It was never in her mind to hurt someone, but now she has indulged herself; if she didn’t kill she would get killed. She marched towards the storeroom that was abandoned at the back of the palace.

Inside the isolated quarters, Nix, Cortez, and Lord Hieron sat on a round table.

"Lord Nix, we haven’t heard any news yet. What do you propose we do?" Cortez asked, now feeling impatient with neither; the princess, his sister nor the maid found were anywhere in Avon.

Hieron rubbed his temples, "I even had to send some underground informants, but truly the princess is not in Avon. Even in the palace, Adric is now with Princess Kitanna like he said."

Nix hit the table, "Then it is Almaria," with every passing moment Kitanna’s life was in danger, and he didn’t know what to do. Even the high priestess was yet to be awake; Nix felt so frustrated that he didn’t know how to keep his reasoning in check. All he wanted to do was fight, but who was he going to fight, and would that determine that Kitanna would come back.

Cortez watched the candlelight flickering in the room. It was bright outside, but inside the room, they closed the doors and windows, leaving only the candle as their source of light. "Have you questioned Lady Bareea?" He asked after thinking for a moment.

Nix nodded his head, "She seems to know nothing; I think she was just a puppet." He sighed tiredly.

As the men were engulfed in their discussion, the door creaked open, and a figure walked slowly into the room.

"Nix..." Kitanna whispered, but her voice was not clearly heard by the three.

The men looked at where the sound was coming from, and slowly Kitanna walked towards where they sat. The candlelight revealing her tired face.
