Chapter 140: SHADOW WHO WALKS AT NIGHT
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: CASTLE ~ HASLEY]
Axilla walked through the palace corridors, holding her dress tightly. Since she retired to her room to sleep, she hadn’t been able to get a whiff of sleep, and this had been going on since she came back to the palace. Axilla wanted to test out a theory that had been going on in her mind, and she was on her way now, but the confidence she used in leaving the room was now failing her as she got closer to the room she was walking to. Now standing in front of the door, Axilla raised her hand to knock on the door, but then she brought it down.
"This is not a good idea," Axilla muttered under her breath. She inhaled deeply and decided to go back to her room and force herself to sleep. As she stepped back, her back hit on something... no, someone. Axilla almost shouted when the hand moved to close her mouth.
"Young master!" Axilla mumbled the name as the larger hands closed her mouth to reduce the impact of her impending shout.
Cortez finally let go of her mouth, brushing his fingers on her delicate lips. "I would never believe you’ll come to my room in the night. Why didn’t you step inside?" He asked, holding her small hands.
Axilla pressed her lip as she followed the young master who tugged her inside the room. "I’m glad I didn’t; you were not inside." She said in a low voice.
"Hm," Cortez hummed, locking the room after the girl stepped inside. He pointed at the bed, "I couldn’t sleep either. I was walking towards your room when I saw you step outside. I was curious about who you went to see, maybe you had a secret lover. The guard you argued with maybe." The young master grinned, trying to get information subtly from the girl.
Axilla was surprised to hear that even the young master was not able to sleep. Does that mean he also felt the emptiness? Since she started sleeping together in his room, the feeling of sleeping alone became strange. Her mind pondered about how she had come all the way to the young master’s room just to get some sleep; did it not sound strange? Axilla pinched the bridge of her nose in worry.
Cortez noticed the girl’s mind was wandering elsewhere, and he wanted to know exactly what was filling her thoughts. So he stepped closer, invading her small space. He brought his face closer to her and asked, "I won’t judge if you have a secret lover."
Axilla furrowed her brows; she didn’t hear anything the young master had said after she told him he couldn’t sleep. "Who? I don’t have any secret lover." She defended herself. What even makes the young master think she had one.
Cortez smiled, brushing the girl’s hair before standing straight. "Get some sleep, Axilla; I’ll join you soon." He touched her cheeks gently.
Axilla went to where the bed was and climbed on it, pulling the bed cover to her chest. She couldn’t believe that she had actually come here to test out the reason for her insomnia. If it doesn’t work out, then it wouldn’t be because of the young master. Deep in thought, the young master joined her in bed, and when she noticed his presence, Axilla shut her eyes close.
As the night delved into midnight, a shadow stepped out of their room, walking towards the other side of the main palace. Making sure nobody was awake or watching, including the guards. Getting to the cell room, the shadow used the spare key to unlock it and entered inside, searching for a particular prisoner.
"Khelan?" The person whispered.
Khelan got up from the ground; he was not quite familiar with the face that was standing in front of him.
"Who is asking?" He narrowed his eyes suspiciously. What was Kitanna and Nix planning this time?
"Your mother!" Panha glared at the prideful young man who looked at her with so much disdain.
Khelan walked closer to the door of the cell, "Did she send you? To help me escape? What of Mother, where is she now?" He couldn’t keep his excitement down. He felt his mother had left him alone to be punished, and he felt betrayed all along. But hearing someone mention his mother’s name means he was too quick to judge the situation.
Panha sighed, ignoring all the questions being asked. "Your mother has asked that you stay calm and try to stay alive. She will be here soon with help." She relayed the important message, taking in the features of Almaria’s son for a second. When she received a letter from Almaria herself, she was a little surprised because the main person she felt was the leader had been Deonisia. Maybe Almaria wrote the letter out of concern for her child.
"Yes! I know Mother would never leave me here alone," Kehlan smiled, lifting her hands up in victory.
Panha twitched her lips, "Make sure you keep your mouth shut about me. You don’t know anything about me, and advise your concubine to stop going around begging for your release; she’s making my work difficult. Else you want me to remove her." She asked, brushing her skirt.
Khelan scowled, "Bareea, why can’t she just rest and take care of the baby? Do whatever you want to her, but keep my son alive after all I don’t owe her anything." He muttered, feeling irritated at the mention of the maid he turned to concubine.
A shuffling noise was heard from the other side of the prison, and someone appeared in the dark.
"Did Almaria not leave any message for me?" Misam asked, looking at the young woman.
Panha glared at the woman who was now referring to her. She turned to look at Khelan, her brows arched.
"Oh, she used to work for Deonisia and Mother," he replied, looking at how Misam had changed since she started staying in the prison.
Panha nodded her head and turned to leave the prison, not replying to the words directed to her.
"If you don’t help me, I will tell everyone that there’s a spy in the palace." Misam sneered, feeling angered by the way the younger woman had ignored her.
The corner of Panha’s lips tugged, but she didn’t smile, "Good luck with that. I believe you will only sound crazy." Saying this, she left the prison room.
Misam gritted her teeth; she couldn’t believe she had been cast aside by those sly women. They had no intention of saving her, and she wouldn’t allow herself to fall just like that. She would survive alone and make a comeback. Misam thought to herself.
Outside the prison, Panha walked back to the inner palace, making sure she was not being followed by anyone. As she got inside her room, she found the maid waiting for her at the door.
"Chief Panha, the process has started. She doesn’t suspect anything, the poison will take its full effect soon." Catja reported.
A smile of evil spread across Panha’s lips; her first attack had already started within the palace. Soon she would kill everyone Kitanna cherishes without a trace.
