Chapter 126: VISIT TO THE PALACE
Chapter 126: VISIT TO THE PALACE
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: LIKE THAT ~ BEA MILLER]
Bareea walked through the palace passage, carrying her son close to her chest. When she got to a particular door, she knocked earnestly. After some time, a woman’s voice was heard.
"Who?" Larel donned her jacket over her shoulder and went to open the door. She saw Bareea standing in front of her door with her child sleeping on her chest.
Bareea pressed her lips for a moment, "Can I come in?" She asked politely.
Larel was taken aback; the last time they had encountered Bareea had drawn a line in their relationship. Seeing her now in front of her doorstep made her worried.
"Come in," she moved to the side to allow the woman to step inside.
Bareea walked inside the room, sitting down on a chair without waiting to be ushered in.
Larel sat on the other side of the chair, her eyes moving from Bareea down to look at the sleeping child.
Bareea noticed the eyes her co-wife had on her son. She held the child possessively, almost waking him up, and this caught Larel’s attention.
"You’ve been quiet for too long. What are we going to do about our husband?" Bareea finally said, petting her son back to sleep.
Larel scoffed; the general term of marital status didn’t offend her, unlike before; rather, it made her laugh. She finally understood why the woman had come to meet her.
"What is funny? I know you don’t understand, but Labre needs his father, and if you love him as you claim to, you should beg the princess to release him. He did nothing wrong." The concubine continued, glaring at Larel because there was nothing funny about the conversation.
Larel nodded her head; she raised her hands to her face, rubbing her temples gently. "You should talk to the princess. I don’t know what it feels like, so I wouldn’t know what to say when I meet the princess. You should do it."
Bareea sighed, "I would have loved to, but...." She couldn’t get herself to tell Larel what the white Lord she used to fancy said to her in front of people. The thoughts alone made her ears burn in embarrassment.
"Bareea, I don’t think I can help you. I believe the princess locked Khelan up for a reason, maybe he helped his mother escape to avoid being punished for her crimes. We should be grateful we didn’t face the same fate, as the princess was lenient despite everything we did to her. I won’t involve myself in any issue that has to do with injustice." Larel spoke calmly, her eyes composed.
Bareea shook her head, "No wonder the queen dowager never liked you. You have switched sides, leaving your husband behind. Was that why you refused to bear him an heir?"
Larel got up from her chair and made her way to the door, letting it open. She turned to say, "If you have nothing else to say, leave my room. I need to attend to the princess very early tomorrow morning. I’ll be sure to remember Khelan when I go to the shrine."
Bareea was shocked; she looked at Larel and then at the widely opened door, being an invitation for her to leave. The concubine stood up from her seat and started walking to leave the room when she heard Larel speak again.
"Don’t ever use Labre’s name to curry favor. And I’ll give you my own warning now, if I should ever find out that you did. I’d use the last of my power to bring that child up as mine." Completing her sentence, Larel closed her door, making Bareea jump out of the way so she wouldn’t get hit by the door.
The next morning, Kitanna sat in the shrine offering her prayers, just like other devotees. When she was done, she stood close to the fountain, watching the peaceful lines of the water, reflecting the wishing stones, also called the holy stones of prayer.
Kitanna was so engrossed in the historicity of the fountain that she didn’t take note of when the priestess finished praying and now stood very close to her.
"Princess Kitanna, I’m honored to finally have you come around the shrine." Mubera bowed slightly. Kitanna acknowledged the bow with a smile.
"You seem to have found liking for the fountain, Princess; there are other holy relics inside here. Let me show you." The elderly woman remarked.
"No, no...I just have a memory with the fountain; it saved me, and I wonder if it’s because of the people’s prayers." The last statement was like a whisper. She remembered hiding under water as she listened to Almaria plot her assassination, the memory was far but appeared to have happened just yesterday. After staying for a few minutes without talking, Kitanna finally decided to break the silence.
"Yesterday....what did you want to say?" She had noticed that the high priestess wanted to talk to her about something but wasn’t able to maybe because of the people in the room.
Mubera smiled; the princess saw through her actions the other day, "I’m worried about Almaria and her cousin. Those two are formidable; I would love if you strengthen your guards and also trust no one, including me."
Kitanna paused, her lips for a moment. "I understand what you mean. I’m also ready for Almaria; you should know I’m not an easy target. I’ve come out from the underworld before escaping death, so if anyone is to be feared, we all know who. We should let the end justify the means."
The two of them spoke casually, moving towards the shrine entrance, their voices low and calm.
Larel bowed when she saw the princess step out of the shrine. The high priestess bowed in respect to Larel after which she disappeared back into the shrine.
"Larel, what do you think about the white Lord, Nix." Kitanna asked when it was now just the two of them walking around without the service of a maid.
Larel tilted her head, "I’ll accept anyone you love, princess. It’s matters of the heart, so it’s quite delicate. On my personal opinion, he’s a very nice man, the type of person who can handle things, making you depend on him."
Kitanna nodded her head; it was truly Nix. Someone who was quite dependable, she smiled as the thought warmed her heart.
"Princess Kitanna!!!" Both Larel and Kitanna were stunned to hear and see the familiar person.
"Axilla?" Kitanna and Larel chorused, looking at each other for a moment.
The young girl ran towards them and encircled them in a hug. She couldn’t believe she was back in the palace. When the young master told her, she had been thinking it to be a tease, but no, here she was holding the princess and the queen who has saved her very close.
"I missed you..." Her voice broke, as she tried to keep the tears away.
Finally, when they broke free from the hug, Kitanna and Larel didn’t fail to notice that the girl had company.
"Cortez, you didn’t tell me you were coming," Larel asked her brother, but it was not out of anger.
Cortez nodded, "Surprise?" It came out as a question.
Kitanna moved her eyes, and she noticed the young woman who stood beside Larel’s brother. Her beauty was quite nerve-striking.
"And your guest?" The princess asked curiously.
Panha walked to stand in front of Kitanna, then she bowed slightly. "I am Panha; I’ve heard a lot about you, Princess Kitanna." She gave out her best smile, hiding the urge to wriggle the princess’s neck.
"Oh welcome, Panha," Kitanna smiled.
Cortez smiled before saying, "We came around for business, so we decided to visit the palace and stay for few days."
