Chapter 996: Chapter 431: Major Changes in South City
The afternoon of late autumn was still very hot, and Shana had no choice but to throw in the towel when teaming up with Lin Wu, who enjoyed the Passive Fishing Buff. There was no rush anyway, as long as they could make it back home for dinner. She put on a hat and sunglasses, propped up her feet, and took a break on the spot to enjoy a sunbath.
"Hey, look." Lin Wu stood up pointing at the sky.
Shana looked to the east, only to see several trails of white smoke in flight. Lin Wu asked, "Fighter jets?"
Shana took a look through binoculars: "Seems faster than fighter jets; it’s missiles."
As soon as she finished speaking, several flying objects began to descend. Despite the distance, the sound of explosions could still be heard. After a while, three plumes of black smoke rose from South City. Shana took out a map, peering through the binoculars while comparing locations, and said, "This is bad, one of the targets appears to be the main base of the assault troops."
"Here they come again."
To the southeast, dozens of rockets trailed by white smoke flew towards South City from the direction of the sea. The artillery at the power plant base kept bombarding South City. Small landing ships ferried in tanks from the large landing ships near the estuary of The Day After Tomorrow River. Each small landing ship could carry one tank at a time, and after landing, the tanks formed squads with the stationed soldiers from the power plant and advanced toward South City.
The most spectacular sight was the mixed formation of a dozen helicopters taking off from the East Shelter. The formation consisted of two types of helicopters, one type was armed helicopters, the other could transport 15 soldiers at a time.
As Lin Wu watched the helicopter formation swoop toward South City, he said, "It’s a completely uneven match; there’s no way we can win."
Shana said: "The East Shelter can’t afford to lose; losing would definitely lead to even bigger internal problems. They’re caught in a cycle of creating new issues while trying to solve another. To solve the food shortage, they occupied land around The Day After Tomorrow River. When land occupation met with resistance, they deployed greater force. Yet, even after overcoming resistance with more force, they faced the dilemma of dealing with over a thousand survivors from South City."
Lin Wu: "Let’s hope Xiao Zhu can hold on."
Shana said, "If I’m not mistaken, the expert deliberately leaked the information about the manual lathe at the negotiation table, possibly as a false lead. A bullet-making lathe is of great significance to the Alliance; Xiao Zhu would surely meet with Xiao Zhu immediately, and the Alliance’s higher-ups will have to convene. With drones pursuing and missile attacks, Xiao Zhu’s chances are slim."
Shana continued, "After all, the East Shelter is the East Shelter, having learned from their past hubris and even resorting to tricks at the negotiation table. I guess they’ve bought off informants from South City. Given Xiao Zhu’s less-than-honorable ways of uniting South City, those who resent him are not few. Let’s go, we’re heading home."
Lin Wu wiggled his hips: "Let’s shake a leg; the club isn’t your destiny, but it can be ours."
"Nobody’s to blame for a hard life." Shana vigorously pedaled her handcart: "Only blame it on meeting unafraid, ridiculous fish."
Lin Wu chuckled and sat down to help pedal: "If we can last until D135 days into winter, we might just hold out until we reach Earth."
Shana said, "It’s coming. What kind of novels do you like to read?"
"City-based hitman and bodyguard stories, cultivation genres, even historical fantasies are fine. Why do you ask?"
Shana said, "Just curious."
...
Upon returning to the base, Maya greeted them, informing them that the East Shelter and the Alliance had just broadcasted to the public half an hour ago. In the Alliance’s broadcast, Xiao Zhu admitted that the situation was uncontrollable, and he was seriously injured. He called for all assault troops to lay down their weapons and surrender to the Post-Apocalypse Base. He concluded that the territory he had seized had finally been taken from him, and this was his retribution.
The East Shelter’s broadcast clarified that they had reached an agreement with the United Nations to immediately rebuild the East Shelter and establish a new shelter in South City. These two shelters would be supervised and managed by the United Nations, which would also provide essential daily supplies for the refugees.
The East Shelter for the first time addressed the rebellion, explaining that the Shelter had no capacity to accommodate hundreds of thousands of refugees and had no choice but to close. Its commander took responsibility for the rebellion and guaranteed he would stand trial after humanity overcame the zombie virus.
The East Shelter did not mention the events in South City. In response to the East Shelter’s statement, the Post-Apocalypse Base released a statement confirming the agreement between the East Shelter and the United Nations, asking any refugees able to do so to immediately move to the two shelters. At these shelters, they will receive basic food and water. Meanwhile, they held back comments on the East Shelter’s explanation for the rebellion, supporting the United Nations’ decision to temporarily withhold giving weapons to the East Shelter.
Thus, Day After Tomorrow City now had three institutions managing shelters: the Post-Apocalypse Base and the two shelters maintained by the East Shelter with the supervision of the United Nations.
Stone waved at them to come over for dinner, saying, "Haven’t heard a peep from South City."
Maya said, "An hour after the assault began, which was two hours ago, someone claiming to be from Veteran Base called me, telling me that Baldy had been arrested, along with seven others. Baldy and the others are being guarded by people from Veteran Base. The charge was that Baldy’s act of shooting at comrades was unacceptable."
Maya added, "I presume there are two reasons why there’s no news from the Survivor’s Alliance. The first reason is that Veteran Base has formally severed friendly relations with us and will no longer provide information. The second reason could be that the Alliance’s broadcasting station has been occupied by the East Shelter. If both are true, I believe Xiao Zhu is not yet dead."
