Chapter 992: Chapter 429: Civil War of Humanity

Five people crammed into a rubber boat feel a bit squeezed, but due to the heavy draft, it’s less likely to capsize.

Lin Wu, dissatisfied, nudged Little Knife with his elbow: "Where’s your Barrett?"

Little Knife answered with a grin: "Using a Barrett to hit people, I might as well use a machine gun. The Steyr SSG 08, with a fiberglass stock, just like your Li, is also a bolt-action sniper rifle."

Snow Egg said: "I read in a magazine before that the shooting range of an SSG rifle is about 300 meters."

Little Knife replied: "It all depends on who’s using it and the gun. This one’s fitted with a six-power scope, effective range can reach six hundred meters, even one thousand meters. At such a distance, it’s nearly impossible for the enemy to hear the gunshot. However, past five hundred meters, the hit rate starts to drop, especially for cold shots. Besides, I’m a clumsy sniper. Others take lives at two kilometers with one shot, while my first-shot hit rate at eight hundred meters at night is only 80%, and 60% for moving targets."

Maya asked: "Little Knife, do you know your location?"

"Yes, the signal tower."

Maya: "Once your position is exposed, you must immediately evacuate from the signal tower and head to the rubber boat to wait for extraction."

"Understood."

Maya continued: "Lin Wu, Little Knife, when you’re ambushing, you also have to take on the blocking task, don’t leave your position lightly."

"Understood."

The rubber boat slowly approached the shore in the darkness; the shore was a river embankment pieced together with rocks. Snow Egg took out a metal rod, stuck it into a crevice between the rocks, hung a net rope on the rod, and the five people climbed up smoothly to the embankment.

Maya gestured with two fingers to the left; Little Knife quickly moved a hundred meters, hunched over, and climbed the 50-meter tall signal tower. Upon reaching the top, Little Knife used night vision binoculars to observe for a long time, then spoke into the earpiece: "No patrol personnel discovered."

The four members of Maya’s team set off. Lin Wu and Little Knife headed towards a factory resembling a ruin. It was once a bamboo processing plant making products like bamboo mats. It had been destroyed by a flood earlier and now lay in ruins. Lin Knife first took some time to familiarize themselves with the inside and outside of the factory building, then reached the second floor of the plant and found two excellent hiding spots amid the rubble. After notifying Maya, Lin Wu dropped a rope downstairs to facilitate a quick withdrawal.

It’s uncertain if we can outfight them, but we must be able to outrun them.

Lin Knife and Little Knife couldn’t see the third hospital; they could only see a road near the railway. Fifty meters into the T-junction of the road was the third hospital.

As planned, Maya and Snow Egg would approach within a hundred meters of the hospital, then deploy Molotov Cocktails with drones to ignite vehicles parked inside the hospital. At the same time, they would attack targets entering their shooting range before deciding on the retreat based on the situation.

Then, Lin Knife would ambush the pursuers entering the open space from the side. Although it was an open area, there were no roads, and the terrain was complicated with all sorts of trash and pits, so they weren’t worried about vehicles giving chase.

Maya and Snow Egg would retreat to Point C and join Little Knife to attack the pursuers.

Lin Wu took out his Lee-Enfield sniper rifle, adjusted the focus of the night vision scope, approximately a hundred and fifty meters from the sniper point. Little Knife was ten meters away from Lin Wu, using an M4 with a standard scope without magnification, an internal red-dot sight, requiring her to adjust to seven levels of brightness to adapt to the scene’s lighting conditions.

Little Knife reported: "Preparation complete." Now, it was a matter of waiting.

Lin Wu spoke: "Beauty, ever since you left home, your personality has become more reserved."

Little Knife replied: "That’s called maturing."

Lin Wu: "I do miss the joy of playing with mud together when we were kids."

Little Knife: "Men can act like boys till they die. Women can’t, they’ll be criticized for not being sensible."

Lin Wu said: "Once we get back to Earth, I’ll sue Dawn for changing your personality."

Little Knife asked incredulously: "Can you win that lawsuit?"

"Definitely not, but we have nothing better to do right now. Picking fights with Dawn is one of the joys of life." Lin Wu continued: "You know, I feel like your personality really started to change after Lin Meng arrived, considering her fool-like character is a whole dimension above yours."

Little Knife: "I can’t tell if you’re praising me or not. Sigh... During that time, I did many things to hurt others, including those I love."

"Really? I didn’t hear about any fights."

Little Knife: "No fights? That’s the worst part. A cold war is the most terrifying; neither party wants to speak to the other. All the thoughts that accumulate inside become anger, irritation, and resentment."

Lin Wu comforted: "Young people don’t understand love."

Little Knife: "And you? Do you understand it?"

Lin Wu laughed: "I don’t, that’s why I stay away from it."

Little Knife laughed too and fell silent for a while before asking: "There are only a few dozen days left until the end, and winter is the most boring and dull season. Do you have any feelings about saying goodbye?"

Lin Wu replied: "To be honest, I do. Isn’t that the reason why we’re here tonight? We need to find things to do even when there’s nothing to do. Sometimes I think, instead of waiting for the game to end, it might be better to die before the game is over."

Little Knife: "What you’re saying is, the last person to leave is the most miserable one."

"Hmm?"

Little Knife: "During college graduation, we cried, laughed, made noise, and caused a ruckus all night long. We originally agreed to see each other off, to take every person to the station. But the next day, those who left early tread carefully, and those who left late pretended to sleep. That was when I realized the most painful feeling was for the person who was the last to leave the dorm. When others left, at least it felt like something was left behind. But the last person to leave had nothing, even felt as if the memories of four years would disappear with the closing of the dorm door."

Little Knife: "If Shadow were to perish, I hope I am not the last one to die. I’m most afraid that you would all die, and I would be left alone in the end, linger until the game is over."

Lin Wu: "You know, it does feel a bit like college graduation. Once we’re back on Earth, even if we can meet each other again, it will only be through deliberate visits. Then, in the blink of an eye, many years pass, and by the next time we meet, we’re already greying."
