Chapter 949: Chapter 411 Library Base_2
Maya asked, "Has the target appeared?"
"Starlight is seen." Nightmare said, "But Nightmare is not in sight. The bandit group’s field operatives are accustomed to wearing masks, perhaps only taking them off when entering the library to rest, drink tea, and have a meal. It looks like they are going to rest at the library base during the day today."
"Snipers, be alert." Nightmare said, "Starlight is talking to the jeep driver by the jeep, I guess they are discussing the jeep, can’t tell if the driver is Nightmare... The driver pulled down the mask... but turned their back to us... The driver went in, damn it!"
Sniper Beard said, "Nearly everyone has arrived, count how many people there are in the bandit group?" The sniper rifle’s scope had a very limited view.
After observing through the binoculars for a while, Nightmare replied, "About 30 people are in sight, with 12 field operatives among them. They’re moving the supplies that the jeeps brought. Wow, that’s rice, about 20 bags of vacuum-packed rice."
Still no sign of Nightmare, the wait continued.
An hour later, three people walked towards the main entrance from the south, attempting to pry open the trunk of a car on the side of the road in search of supplies along the way. Near the main gate, they peeked inside. At this time, a sentry dressed in a ghillie suit, lying in the side bushes, stood up to talk to them.
Soon after, Peanut rode a motorcycle to the main gate, and several gunmen appeared on the 10th and 8th floors of nearby Building 1. Peanut let them cross the small bridge through the large hole, reached the dilapidated guardhouse, and had a chat with the three, using a walkie-talkie to communicate with someone inside. Then, the three people took turns entering the guardhouse to change clothes, Peanut checked their backpacks, clothes, and bodies, and after finding no problems, let them in.
The three people arrived at the library one after another, where they were greeted by a girl Nightmare didn’t recognize. Peanut rode back, parked the motorcycle aside, walked to the side of the library, sat on an outdoor bench, picked up a book from beside the bench, and continued reading, as if the work to follow had nothing to do with him.
Maya, listening to Nightmare’s briefing, said, "Peanut doesn’t seem to have a very important job." At the Sawmill, Peanut was a Deputy Commander, his status akin to half Maya half Lin Wu, mainly responsible for field combat missions. Here, he was not only unrelated to field operations, but also did not hold any leadership positions, his job was to inspect physical conditions and belongings of prospective new members.
Maya had a bold idea: "Lin Wu, can we make a call through the phone Beard left, have a chat with Peanut, see if he could help us get rid of Nightmare? He doesn’t need to do it himself, just if he could talk to Nightmare outside for a while."
Lin Wu objected: "Starlight and Peanut are in a romantic relationship, and the bandit group was jointly established by Starlight and Nightmare. This would lead to a breakup between Starlight and Peanut. Compared to Nightmare, I’m closer to Peanut." They were talking downstairs, without using walkie-talkies.
Maya: "This is about the interests of the squad."
Lin Wu: "Since it concerns the team’s interests, we cannot exploit personal feelings."
This left Maya speechless, knowing that when Lin Wu and Stone are both principled against something, there’s no chance of persuading them. Currently, the situation was that the squad had two opportunities to assassinate Starlight within an hour and a half, but had not located Nightmare. If they couldn’t kill Nightmare by 2 a.m., then the one to die could only be Starlight.
Beard’s voice came through the walkie-talkie: "Can’t deny that the library base is a fairly well-run community, everything is well-organized. More successful than our Veteran Base."
Maya took the walkie-talkie and asked, "Having doubts?"
Beard: "No, it’s my duty to strike at the bandit group, my duty to avenge my comrades. Selfishly speaking, I must protect the Veteran’s Club’s arms. Who knows how long this damn zombie virus will last, we need to have long-term Survival considerations. And the important reliance for long-term survival is arms."
Nightmare said, "The interviewees have come out, taken away separately... one of them joined the pioneer team, one went to Building 3, and another was escorted out."
Two members of the bandit group forced a newcomer to leave at gunpoint. Peanut stood up, walked over to ask a few questions, then the newcomer got on Peanut’s motorcycle. Peanut dropped her off outside the community, gave her a pack of compressed biscuits and a bottle of mineral water, the newcomer seemed to cry. Peanut did not comfort her further and drove back to the library.
The newcomer sat under the shade of a tree near the gate for a while, seemingly lost in thought. Soon after, she took out a nylon rope from her backpack, threw it over a tree branch, and hung herself below the tree. After receiving the report from the sentries, Peanut was still the one to handle the matter; he came out to climb the tree, cut the rope, placed the newcomer’s body on the back of the motorcycle, drove about three hundred meters west, carried the body up, and tossed it at the steps of the subway station entrance before turning back.
After returning to the base, Peanut no longer read, simply lay down on the bench, covering his face with the book to sleep. It seemed the recent event had quite a psychological impact on him.
Starlight entered the sniper scope for the third time, sitting beside Peanut and talking to him. Their exchange seemed pleasant, and at the end, they shared a piece of chocolate. Starlight left with a smile, Peanut’s mood improved significantly, and he continued reading.
"Sounds like true love." Lin Wu said, "If Starlight really loves Peanut, she wouldn’t assign him dangerous missions. As a smart person, she knows that emotions affect decision-making, so she doesn’t let Peanut into the decision-making or leadership circle. Giving Peanut a menial job is her best choice."
