Chapter 944: Chapter 409 Cooperation
Maya made her decision and said, "The railway bridge base has developed just fine, and there’s no need to worry about leaving it behind. I can join you guys on a trip." Meaning, she’s offering one person, while expecting two from them.
Lin Wu disagreed, "That won’t work, we still have no bullets for our guns." He looked towards Nightmare.
Nightmare, fully understanding Lin Wu’s point, said with a snicker, "We still have over 60 rifle rounds and 50 pistol rounds."
Lin Wu was taken aback, "How are we supposed to fight with so little ammo?" It’s not even enough to haggle with.
Nightmare explained, "We’re planning an ambush."
At this point, Blood Meng spoke up, "What about partnering with Veteran Base? Have them supply both men and bullets?"
Maya thought it was feasible, "The Veteran Base wants revenge, and they also want to prevent the bandit group from taking over the Veteran’s Club. After all, to the Veteran Base, the arsenal in the Veteran Club’s basement vault is regarded as their own."
"We’ll each contribute two people," Blood Meng said, looking at Lin Wu, "You definitely want to go, right?"
"I don’t want to go, I don’t even want to move a muscle."
Blood Meng flashed a toothy grin, "Consider it a favor you owe me, sis. After we get to Earth, I can grant you a considerably unreasonable wish."
Lin Wu firmly stated, "My wish is not to go with you all."
Nightmare said, "We’ll leave the base here temporarily. Once we succeed, we will help you complete a mission. You know my credibility."
Lin Wu pondered for a moment, then stretched out his palm, "Five."
"One."
Lin Wu said, "One is not impossible, but I’ve made my offer already; by doing this, you’re not allowing me to save face."
Nightmare speechless, "Two?"
"Agreed." These missions are all challenging, and he needed assistants. Besides the difficulty, the missions were also highly dangerous, and Lin Wu didn’t want to drag his own mates into risk. The other reasons for agreeing, as Nightmare had pointed out, although she had a bad temper, was ugly, and was manipulative, she was, indeed, quite reliable. Of course, there were other reasons too, like Lin Wu’s dislike for Nightmare, his willingness to help Maya, and sheer boredom.
Checking their equipment, Lin Wu took an M4, Maya brought an AK rifle, and with limited rifle ammo, they only took one magazine each. Each carried a pistol and one magazine as well. Nightmare’s side didn’t have more weapon resources than Lin Wu’s. Luckily, Nightmare had night vision goggles, one for each person. Additionally, they each got a walkie-talkie with an earpiece left behind by the eastern base.
Since it’s summer, they didn’t bring any cold-weather clothes, but each person carried ten cans of food, three liters of water, and basic medicine. Maya brought a recurve bow and 20 arrows made by Xiao Rou. Lastly, each person had a crowbar, two daggers, a camera, and a laptop computer.
They offered four bottles of liquor as a gift to meet with Veteran Base, including two bottles of whisky and two bottles of tequila. The railway bridge base had a ban on alcohol, and everyone wasn’t much interested in drinking, occasionally enjoying only one or two bottles of beer on summer nights.
Dinner tonight was instant noodles with greens. During the meal, they discussed the current situation—Snow Egg, Little Knife, Lin Meng, and Xiao Wu all wanted to go out for a spin, but Maya refused, telling them to stay alive and well.
After dinner, four people set out from the railway bridge base, following the route found on Nightmare’s computer, the squad headed towards Veteran Base.
Getting off the pedal car, the four of them put down their night vision goggles and had not advanced a hundred meters before they encountered zombies. As they continued to move forward, the density of zombies began to increase. The squad did not enter the forest of trains but walked south along the railway tracks.
The logistics center was right beside the railway tracks, resembling a distribution hub, but it only had three railway lines: two main lines and one leading into the logistics center. When the transport trains arrived at the logistics park, workers emptied the incoming cars while loading the outgoing goods into designated ones.
The goods went through automated scanning and were distributed via conveyor belts, categorizing all small items according to delivery destinations. Finally, the goods were hauled off by huge trucks, smaller trucks, and even tricycles, distributed to every express delivery point in the city, to be handed over to couriers for delivery.
Facing the railway tracks, the logistics center had a row of open-plan workshops with electric fence gates, all of which were now closed. A banner was strung across the platform from the gates to the tracks, it read: Veteran Base, No Admittance Without Invitation.
Since the front entrance was a no-go, they had to enter from a side road. Maya had everyone conceal themselves under the platform, then she climbed up to the road, standing in sight. Parked along the roadside were several sedans and box trucks. Looking up at the flashing security camera on the electricity pole, Maya raised her flashlight toward the camera, clicked it a few times, then switched it off and quietly waited in the dark.
About a minute later, a big bearded man in camouflage appeared on the road, seemingly followed by others. He approached within three meters of Maya, exchanged a couple of sentences, after which Maya placed her weapons on the ground, and walked away with the big beard.
Ten minutes or so later, Maya returned, "Come on in." She picked the weapons up from the ground.
Lin Wu and the other two made their way up the road, turning left after 50 meters into the parking lot of the logistics center. Ordinarily, this place would be filled with various express delivery and small-parcel delivery trucks. Now there were many trucks too, and on one side stood a massive Behemoth truck.
The logistics center was U-shaped with buildings surrounding a parking lot. Within were numerous facilities including inspection and shipping departments. Goods to be transported by railway had to be inspected first, labeled, and then delivered to loading areas via conveyor belts. Loaders then sorted goods into different carriages based on their destinations.
