Chapter 927: Chapter 403 Fire Street
Xiao Cai and Xiao Rou discussed outside the door for a while and came back agreeing to relocate near the railroad bridge base. They stated that their base would be closer to the mountains rather than the railroad bridge base. Blue Star, who enjoyed a slow-paced life, was already fascinated to learn that the railroad bridge base housed so many people, likening it to a real-life version of Stardew Valley.
After having lunch, Xiao Hua, Xiao Cao, Xiao Rou, and Xiao Cai began packing their belongings. During this time, Lin Ma did not offer any suggestions nor urged them; take whatever you want, and carry as much as you can.
As a result, not only did all four of them prepare a large backpack each, but they also each brought a suitcase. No wait, all four suitcases belonged to Xiao Hua. Xiao Cai’s belongings were simple, very streamlined, consisting of a small amount of food, the rest being tools and weapons.
The four suitcases undoubtedly slowed down the team’s progress, but Maya made sure to consider the timing when setting up rest points.
Xiao Rou was assigned to protect Xiao Hua at the back, while Lin Wu still took the lead, followed by Maya providing support. When they encountered zombies on the road, Xiao Rou provided long-range support. Both of their archery was supremely accurate, nailing headshots within 20 meters.
In response to Lin Wu’s praise, Xiao Cai was modest. She felt zombies were no different from stationary targets; if she couldn’t score an 8 within 20 meters, she’d be embarrassed to call herself a Hunter.
Xiao Rou spoke less, mostly it was Xiao Cai speaking while Xiao Rou acted. But Xiao Rou was very attentive to details. After explaining where they would camp for the night, Xiao Rou began collecting combustible materials. After everyone moved up to the air station, Xiao Rou also set up cameras nearby.
The air station was deserted, not much equipment inside, and the space was quite large. While everyone was preparing dinner, Lin Wu slipped out to a few pharmacies 200 meters away and gathered a batch of medicines. Although there were many survivors, there were too many pharmacies, so the three pharmacies Lin Wu visited were not looted. Lin Wu eventually found a suitcase and filled it with medicines.
The suitcase was placed under a car at the base of the iron tower. Lin Wu climbed up the tower, and when Maya, waiting outside, saw Lin Wu, she exclaimed, "They have some issues."
The issues were many, but condensed into one sentence: When will this damned day end?
Lin Wu sat down, took his dinner, and began to explain about Blue Star, immigration, Dawn—all of which could be tied together, mostly truth. However, the conclusion about the zombie virus was not something every Earthling could accept. Hence, Lin Wu had another explanation.
"We can’t stop the course of history because these events have already happened. I’m not highly educated, just attended university, so it’s hard to explain the butterfly effect. The conclusion is: no matter what we do, it won’t affect the future." Lin Wu said, "This is called the time-travel rule. For example, if a future me came to the present, married a girl and had children, that wouldn’t count as a real event, otherwise it would create a paradox. Because the birth of this child could potentially lead to my non-existence in the future, and if I don’t exist, how could the child?"
"My teacher explained time-travel using parallel universes: History is like a book, the past is already written. Future generations can scribble or modify on it, but they can’t change what has already been written. By coming to Earth, we’re essentially establishing a new parallel universe, where we don’t exist a thousand years in the future, only now."
Xiao Hua tried to understand, "If you hadn’t traveled through time, that would be one universe. Because you traveled to Earth, a new universe appeared. In Universe B, what the future holds is uncertain, akin to a new world. When you travel back home, you return to Universe A, not a thousand years later in Universe B."
"Exactly, well done Xiao Hua," Lin Wu said. "Therefore, your future is unknown."
Xiao Cao felt a bit pessimistic, "Our butterfly wings can’t change the future, the medicines will eventually expire, the energy will eventually run out."
Lin Wu nodded, "That’s also true, but we’ll be able to return to our own world in 180 days. Then we could visit you in the normal way, and provide help." This wasn’t boasting; Dawn would likely leave behind a True Hardcore Mode copy. After arriving on Earth and logging into the game, one could figure out a way to transfer resources into the True Hardcore Mode. With the conditions of a normal game, securing firearms, medicines is no issue. Well managed, even planes and artillery could be acquired.
Xiao Hua asked, "What about the humans?"
Lin Wu said, "I think there isn’t enough time, we can’t achieve great things. Perhaps a thousand years later, humans might travel back to eliminate the zombies, but that space has nothing to do with you or me."
Lin Wu added, "You are very fortunate."
At this, Xiao Hua and Xiao Cao felt touched, "Thank you."
Xiao Hua and Xiao Cao showed affection, while Xiao Rou had some conflicts. That night, the conversation between Xiao Cai and Xiao Rou was overheard clearly by Maya, roughly meaning: The world is already like this, let’s make up.
Lin Wu’s words brought them both hope and despair. The situation humanity faced was irreversible. But sometimes, despair is not necessarily bad; it can make people face the present and cherish the current moment.
...
The air station was 7 kilometers away from the dispersal center. Maya, having lived in the south area for a long time, underestimated the hardship of this stretch of road. Western area survivors were almost entirely wiped out, with a plethora of factories and warehouses protecting the zombies from being washed away by floods. Over these days, zombies gradually emerged from the buildings, and now, the zombie density in the west area was extremely high.
