Chapter 921: Chapter 400 Southern_3
Lin Wu spotted the Triumph Building from five kilometers away.
The South City District wasn’t heavily impacted by floods due to its higher elevation. The floodwaters had flowed back into Day After Tomorrow City from West City, and although South City had also been inundated, it wasn’t hit by aggressive flooding. The neat rows of cars on the road indicated that the water levels in South City weren’t high enough to float the vehicles away. However, the sediment brought by the floodwaters was still significant, covering the cars with a layer of dirt, with some ground areas having mud as deep as ten centimeters.
The floodwaters may not have swept the cars away, but they did wash away the zombies, which were far less dense in this area—much less so than during the intense periods in Left County. Lin Wu crouched low and used the cars for cover as he checked out a few of them, discovering that water had accumulated inside, which ruled out his idea of using the cars as a means of transportation.
Lin Wu crossed the road and leaned against the perimeter wall of a residential compound, the stickiness of the mud underfoot bothering him enough to re-tie his shoelaces tightly. As Lin Wu stood up, he was momentarily dazzled by the sunlight. Looking up, he saw someone in the 32nd-floor apartment of the compound using a mirror to flash light in his direction.
It was two women and a man who were survivors. They became rather excited when they spotted another human and waved eagerly. Lin Wu waved back in response. The mirror flashed again at Lin Wu, then the light shifted and began to move in front of him, pointing towards a roundabout parking lot one kilometer away.
Put simply, it meant there was a parking structure within the roundabout, which had three levels. It seemed the survivors were trying to tell Lin Wu that there was either something terrible in the parking structure or other survivors were inside. Perhaps the two were one and the same because nowadays, survivors can be the most terrifying of all.
Lin Wu blew a kiss to show his thanks and continued moving forward. He was currently on the road outside the residential compound, and by following the roundabout to the left, he could enter a commercial street. If he kept going around the roundabout, he would continue along the road outside other residential compounds.
When it comes to zombies, first, you avoid them; if you can’t avoid them, you kill them; if you can’t kill them, you go around them. Applying the same tactics from the games worked out pretty smoothly so far.
As Lin Wu neared the roundabout, he stealthily followed a zombie, took it down with a backstab, and then waited to one side. Ten meters away, there was another zombie directly in his path. After a short wait, the zombie turned its head, and as Lin Wu advanced with his dagger, a small stone fell onto the roof of the car between him and the zombie, making a significant noise.
Ignoring the mud on the ground, Lin Wu decisively dropped to the ground before the zombie could turn around. Lying still under the car, he observed the zombie’s feet for a good ten seconds before rising and creeping up behind the zombie, finishing it off with another backstab.
Where did the small stone come from? Lin Wu looked up and saw the roundabout parking structure’s rooftop, which was 20 meters away and on the third level. There was a short railing on the rooftop, and beside it was a large jeep, with a woman sitting on its roof, holding a slingshot, and firing another stone at Lin Wu. Her expression was provocatively smug, and she even beckoned with her finger, signaling: come on over.
Lin Wu looked around; there were only a few scattered zombies nearby. The twenty-odd-meter stretch from his location to the parking structure’s entrance had no zombies, but Lin Wu saw mud footprints up the ramp, which, if he guessed right, indicated that survivors were lying in ambush waiting for him to get to the parking structure, ready for a pincer attack.
Should he turn their plans against them, go there and kill them, then loot the parking structure? Forget it! They were survivors, after all, and Lin Wu could understand them. So he pulled out his gun, held it with both hands, and aimed. The woman on the rooftop had just pulled back her slingshot when Lin Wu shot her in the head. Then he put away his gun and left, understanding them but prioritizing his safety by making an example of them.
You show goodwill, I show goodwill; you provoke, I kill. Whether these are the rules of the apocalypse, Lin Wu didn’t know, but they were definitely his rules.
Pity, that woman on the rooftop was quite pretty. Lin Wu turned left into the commercial street, checking the side mirrors of a roadside car; he saw two men hurriedly running towards the rooftop.
