Chapter 919: Chapter 400: The South
Shana answered the call on speaker: "Hello?"
Maya: "Hey, Shana, how are you guys doing?"
Shana detailed their current situation, and Maya was pleased with Shadow’s progress: "May I make a suggestion regarding personnel arrangement?"
"Of course."
Maya said: "From what we can see, it’s unlikely that survivors will migrate on a large scale before the plague ends. Similarly, you don’t have much time left. I suggest that Lin Wu be in charge of small-scale cargo transport; he is very capable and self-sufficient. Take useful items with you; what can’t be taken should be moved to a safer area first."
Maya said: "Mobilize most of your people to the resource trains; food is crucial, as are planks, coal, etc. Also, start collecting fuel as soon as possible. Consequently, the current focus of the work is not on restrooms, toilets, drinking water, or chopping wood, but on resources."
Maya said: "Once Lin Wu is done with that, have him search for warehouses. His job is to locate resources, do not let him transport them, or else he will definitely slack off."
Lin Wu: "Ha!"
Maya as if she hadn’t heard him: "Don’t waste time at night; it’s inconvenient to visit distribution sites, but you can fetch water. Do not think about making cars just yet; I suggest making a cart with tires and planks for the transportation of water and firewood on elevated roads. The nighttime starts after six in the evening, and from around six to eleven, you should be able to transport several rounds of clean water and firewood. Don’t let Lin Wu do that either; if you see him idling by, let him work with night vision goggles."
Maya: "Shana, you’ve twisted your foot, so you can stay at home and make bows and arrows with bamboo. Zombies’ skulls are not that hard; sharpening the arrowheads will be enough. Bamboo is an infinite resource for us, and we need to utilize it as much as possible. I think we don’t need to use pipes for water supply; we can use bamboo instead."
Maya explained: "Clear the inside of the bamboo to serve as pipes, which saves the trouble of laying down pipes and makes for easier maintenance and fixation. Get the water up on the elevated bridge, then split the bamboo in half to serve as water pipes, securing them along the bridge with wire, following the flow of water downwards."
Maya said: "Stone is a bit slow-responding; don’t you guys have seeds? Stone could collect local soil and grow vegetables. Vegetables are important, living on instant noodles alone is definitely problematic for health, and it’s potentially fatal. Therefore, even without vegetables, you should add various wild greens appropriately."
Lin Wu asked: "Talk about important stuff—where are you?"
Maya replied: "We followed Shana’s advice and are now on the 36th floor of Triumph Building with solar panels, batteries, and no problems with food and water. It’s just that there’s some intense internal conflict."
female prisoners used cars to reach Triumph Building before the flood, and following Shana’s advice, looted Xialma Supermarket. During this, they battled zombies and other survivors. With additional losses along the way, only 85 survived. Before and after the citywide power outage caused by the dam breach, they transported the necessary supplies from the 9th to the 36th floor using elevators and fire escape stairs. They established a base on the 36th floor.
During the hardest days, everyone was very united, ready to work hard and help each other. In yesterday’s afternoon, during the first dinner after officially finishing moving, Maya noticed something wrong. Some people began to express their opinions on the distribution of supplies, and quite a few echoed their sentiments.
They roughly divided into several factions. The equal distribution method, where everyone gets the same amount of food and water. The needs-based distribution method, providing resources according to needs. The tiered system method, sorting everyone into several teams based on their work, and each team receives the same supplies daily; it’s up to the teams to decide how to distribute them. The leader method, where a leader is elected, and then the leader appoints several key members who decide how to distribute the resources.
The 85 people ranged from 18 to 60 years old, each with different needs and demands, so the first dinner meeting ended in disarray, and a second meeting is being prepared with the agenda to decide on the nature of the teams.
Maya was part of the neutral faction and a heroic figure that everyone wanted to win over, but she didn’t voice any opinions, focusing solely on practical work. Such as building a water collection system, growing vegetables, food preservation, and scouting the surroundings, among other specific tasks.
After the discordant dinner last night, Maya didn’t shirk her responsibilities. Given the increasingly tense mood, at breakfast, Maya proposed that she and four female prisoners keep all the weapons under their control, maintaining complete neutrality to preserve order and prevent bloodshed. Because of Maya’s high prestige, no one objected.
Maya said: "I simply avoided an immediate conflict."
Shana looked at the map on her phone: "You’re in the southernmost part of the city, and we’re in the southwest part; the direct distance between us is over 20 kilometers. Got any ideas?"
Maya said: "No specific ideas."
Lin Wu: "Our two areas have one thing in common; there’s almost no standing water, the floods all went northeast. The weather is predicted to warm step by step, and if we don’t reunite now, the entire city will become a land of plague, uninhabitable for humans." Water carrying corpses pollutes the water. Without water, the air will be polluted.
Stone said: "Maya, you do have ideas, but given our current situation, that’s why you don’t have any, right?"
Maya didn’t deny it again: "My idea is simple, just let Lin Wu come and get me."
