Chapter 908: Chapter 395: Changes in the Shelter_2

Stone was in the worst condition, with a high fever of 39.8 degrees, some confusion, and chills. Little Knife was next, moaning for several hours. The dry clothes he had changed into were soaked again with sweat from the pain, but there was some improvement compared to before the injection; at least he could bear it. The other people were still feverish, but their temperatures were all below 38.5 degrees. Among them, Shana was listless, but the fever did not affect Lin Meng and Xiao Wen too much.

Lin Wu and Snow Egg took the ladle and fed each patient a spoonful of thin porridge. Su Shi and Xiao Wu were in charge of vigilance and the water collector respectively. The water collector was a large funnel that could be attached to the mouth of a bucket and could also be enlarged with homemade soft iron sheets or waterproof cloth. The bucket was a common 20-liter drinking water bucket.

Su Shi and Xiao Wu ate first, followed by Lin Wu and Snow Egg. Sitting down, leaning against the wall, they ate the piping hot porridge by the fire, feeling revived. But this revival was not necessarily a good thing; with a comfortable body, their senses became sharper, and various foul smells mixed in the water made them nauseous.

After a full meal, Lin Wu fell into a deep sleep, hearing noises in his sleep but unable to open his eyes. When he woke up again, it was already early morning. Lin Meng and Xiao Wen had taken turns during the night to cover for Lin Wu and Snow Egg, allowing them to have a good sleep. The noise was Little Knife having diarrhea, stumbling to the restroom in darkness, accidentally knocking over a pot filled with boiling water. Luckily, the water was not too hot, so no burns, but it meant Little Knife had no dry shoes to wear.

...

Breakfast was still thin porridge. Stone and Shana felt better; compared to Stone being half-dead, Shana regained some vitality. Little Knife slept well in the second half of the night, and the pain in his abdomen eased significantly by morning. However, Su Shi, who was on the night shift, fell ill with a fever.

The happiest thing for Lin Wu in the morning was the light, as he could clearly see the situation inside the church. The water level was about one and a half meters below the platform they were on, and there were at least twenty zombies floating in it, along with several human corpses. The water was murky, with lots of debris including foam, wooden planks, plastic chairs, and more.

Everyone’s mood was not great, but there was no negative attitude, just fewer words, as if everyone had exhausted their strength. They turned on the radio to listen to the music broadcasted on various channels as they ate their porridge, two people sharing one pot, spoonful by spoonful.

After finishing the meal and checking the time, it was already past the 8 AM live broadcast time, so they couldn’t get the weather forecast and had no idea how long this damned rain would last.

Xiao Wen took the initiative to clean the utensils. Lin Wu and Snow Egg stretched a rope on both sides of the corridor, 50 centimeters above the floor, and everyone hung their wet clothes on it to dry. They turned their water-soaked shoes upside down and placed them by the fire to dry.

Around 8:30 AM, the broadcast finally resumed live, but it was with bad news.

Last night, an insurrection occurred in the shelter. It was overrun with people beyond control, leading to vastly substandard living conditions and a scarcity of food and water. Some soldiers were hoarding food and secretly giving it to their relatives in the dead of night—an act that was discovered, sparking a robbery against soldiers’ family members in the early hours of the morning.

This led to an assault on the military base’s warehouse, and soldiers were forced to open fire, killing some people. This incited chaos in the shelter, and many soldiers’ friends and relatives were attacked. In fact, they indeed had more provisions than others.

The base sent over a dozen squads to quell and control the situation, attempting to restore order to the shelter. During the operation, a sergeant discovered his fiancee had been killed; in a rage, he indiscriminately sprayed the nearby crowd with a machine gun from an armored vehicle. Although quickly restrained by his fellow soldiers, it caused significant casualties. However, the order in the shelter was temporarily stabilized as a result.

At 3 AM, the squads that completed the suppression mission returned to the base.

At 5 AM, a major led 12 armored vehicles, 8 trucks, and over 100 soldiers back into the shelter. The major explained through loudspeakers that military morale was unstable because the base’s soldiers had learned of relatives being killed. They were there to ensure the safety of the soldiers’ families and asked everyone to understand. The major promised in the name of the General, the highest-ranking officer at the base, that by this evening, they would provide everyone with sufficient water, food, and medical supplies.

The major called out through loudspeakers, asking who were soldiers’ relatives or friends. People who stepped forward were verified by specialists, contacted the base by radio, and after their identities were confirmed, they were allowed onto trucks for a physical examination. When there were doubts raised, the major responded that it was to prevent dissension among the troops and asked the refugees to understand.

The trucks made several trips until 7 AM, when the major led the team to withdraw, taking away over 300 refugees. To everyone’s surprise, after the last truck returned to the base, the base closed its gates, mounted machine guns in high places, and set up barbed wire at its breaches to drive out residing dignitaries and social elite.

Only four staff members of the radio station remained in the base, thanks to the protection of an officer who was a fan of the station. The station communicated with this officer and learned that the base had been taken over by insurgents.

The base was bordered by a canal on one side and a highway on the other, continuously receiving resources from the outside world. Along with the global outbreak of the zombie virus, the base’s daily resource intake began to decline. Discord had already emerged among the upper echelons of the base two days earlier. A young military officer believed that politicians should no longer lead the base’s operations and that everything should be taken over by Fungus Side.
